Part of cross-environment orchestration. An environment (A) can now link to another (B) and call B's T3 MCP tools as B's outside agent. It works headless and over Tailscale, LAN, Connect or loopback.

Linking

  • t3 environment link <url> --pairing-code … --access … (or the peerLinks.link RPC) drives B's existing MCP OAuth flow server-side: register a loopback client that is never visited, approve with the pairing code, exchange with PKCE. B needs no new endpoint.
  • B lists the session as T3 Code · <A's label> in Settings → Connections, where it can be revoked.
  • A refuses to link to itself, and refuses a peer that can't honour T3-Mode-Limit (the new mcpModeLimitHeader capability) or, from #16695, keep a link's work within it.

Storage

  • The token goes in A's server secret store under a random name the row records. The rest goes in peer_environment_links (migration 068).
  • Links last as long as B's mcp-client session: 30 days, with no renewal yet.

Calling

  • PeerMcpClient keeps one MCP session per peer address and re-initialises on a 404, for example after B restarts.
  • It sends the calling agent's limits in T3-Mode-Limit on every request (#16653).
  • It decodes results with the local tool's schema, and keeps B's refusal code so the agent sees why B refused.
  • The token only goes to an address that proves it is the linked peer: its /.well-known/t3/environment must report the linked environment id. A reused LAN address or a moved hostname never receives it.

Managing

  • t3 environment list [--json], t3 environment unlink <id>, and the peerLinks.list/link/unlink RPCs. List needs access:read; link and unlink need access:write.
  • Unlinking forgets the token on A. Revoking happens on B.

Agents start using links in the next PR.

Verification

  • peer/PeerLinks.test.ts runs A's real PeerLinks and PeerMcpClient, each with its own database and secret store, against B's real descriptor, MCP OAuth and /mcp routes on a real socket. B uses the real mcp-client authenticator. The four tests:
    • A wrong pairing code creates no session. A good one links, B lists T3 Code · Laptop, and the link shows as reachable. A call carrying approval-required/plan arrives narrowed, and a call carrying full-access is capped at the link's auto. B's refusal code reaches the caller.
    • Once B's address answers as another environment, the call fails, B receives no bearer, and the link lists as unreachable.
    • Revoking on B → capability_denied with "link it again". Moving the clock 31 days → the link lists as expired, and no bearer is sent.
    • Linking itself, or a peer without the capability, is refused without spending the pairing code.
  • Mutation-checked: each of these fails exactly its own test when removed:
    • the environment-id check before sending a token;
    • the self check;
    • the capability check;
    • the expiry check;
    • the T3-Mode-Limit header;
    • keeping B's refusal code.
  • Also ran: McpHttpServer, project/handlers, RpcAuthorization, initializeV2Database, cli/app, ws, contracts rpc and environment. All passed. Server and contracts typecheck clean.
  • CLI smoke test in a scratch base dir: environment list (text and --json), link to a dead address ("Nothing at … answered as a T3 Code environment"), and unlink of an unknown id.

Review fixes (bots plus two adversarial reviews)

  • Token and row stay paired. Each link's token goes under a random name recorded in the row (secret_name, migration 068), written before the row points at it. Relinking removes the old token. Two links racing to one peer can no longer leave a read-only row holding a full-access token; a test forces that interleaving and fails with a shared name.
  • Errors say what happened. Only the peer's own OAuth refusals become pairing_rejected. A dropped connection is unreachable, and an answer this version can't read, including a malformed redirect, is incompatible instead of a crash. Storage failures show a fixed message and log the cause.
  • No credentials in clear. Plain http:// is refused unless the address is this machine or a Tailscale address, for the primary and alternate addresses.
  • Slower routes. The descriptor probe waits 10 s for non-loopback addresses (3 s on loopback), for a relayed or waking peer.
  • PeerLinks.get reads one stored link without probing every peer, for callers that only need its label (#16719's follower and delegation).

End-to-end run, two real servers

Two t3 serve processes from the top of this stack, each with its own data directory, on one machine. A laptop (port 3971) and a box (port 3972). Their projects are clones of one bare origin, so they share a repository. An outside agent (OAuth with a pairing code) drives the laptop's /mcp, and real Claude Sonnet 5.5 turns run on both sides. The last part repeats the run over Tailscale HTTPS (a *.ts.net HTTPS address).

  • t3 auth pairing create on the box, then t3 environment link http://127.0.0.1:3972 --pairing-code … --access auto on the laptop. The result was "Linked cups … with auto access, until 2026-11-06". t3 environment list showed it reachable, and the box logged "Approved an MCP client sign-in. { client: 'T3 Code · cups', access: 'auto', method: 'pairing-code' }".
  • Revocation: t3 auth session revoke <id> on the box. The laptop's next call failed with "The linked environment no longer accepts this link. It may have been revoked there; link it again.", and environment list showed that as last error.
  • Relinking with a new pairing code worked straight away.
  • Over Tailscale: I unlinked, then linked again to a *.ts.net HTTPS address, and it was reachable over HTTPS.

CI failed on the migration-list tests (055_OrchestrationV2, reconcileV2PreviewMigration), which hard-code the released migrations. Both now include 59_PeerLinks.

Linking now restricts plain HTTP and returns a fixed storage error message. A failed link attempt or a race between two links can still leave an unused access token in the server secret store. This is bounded and does not block merging, but cleaning it up is worthwhile.

Reject plain http: peer addresses that are not loopback.

peerOrigin accepts any http: URL. link sends the pairing code and receives the access token over that origin. PeerMcpClient then sends Bearer ${token} to it on every call. For a LAN address over plain HTTP, any observer on the network can read the pairing code and the long-lived token. The descriptor check does not stop this, because a passive observer does not need to answer as the peer. Allow http: only for loopback hosts. Tailscale addresses can be an explicit exception if the project wants that. Require https: for all other hosts.

Do not build the error message from cause.

storageError puts String(cause) into message. This message reaches RPC clients and the CLI. The guideline says the message "is fixed or built from those attributes, never from cause". Keep cause as a field and use a fixed message.

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds a substantial cross-environment MCP linking capability with OAuth credentials, persistent token storage, remote tool execution, and new authorization paths. Its auth-sensitive production changes and unresolved token-handling, response-decoding, and migration concerns require human review.

resolve releases the linked peer's bearer token to any endpoint that returns the same public environmentId, so an attacker controlling a saved address can copy that descriptor and obtain a credential replayable against the real peer with the link's permissions. The descriptor is unsigned, so this equality check does not authenticate the peer; verify an authenticated peer identity before returning the token.

Not changing here. The descriptor check is not what authenticates the peer; the transport is. Since this PR's review fixes, a link's addresses can only be https, loopback or a Tailscale address, all chosen when the link is made, and the token is only ever sent to those. Receiving it means presenting a valid certificate for that hostname, being that node on the tailnet, or being on this machine, which is the same bar as receiving any client's bearer for that environment. The descriptor match then stops a moved or reused address that does pass the transport from getting the token. Pinning the peer's identity (a key in the descriptor, signed by the server) would add defense in depth; that is a protocol change across both servers, so it is left for a follow-up and flagged for the maintainer.

Use Effect.catchTags for the known endpoint error tags.

The code catches AuthMcpRegistrationError, AuthMcpApprovalError, and AuthMcpTokenError with Effect.catchIf(Schema.is(...)). The guideline reserves catchIf for structural checks. Use Effect.catchTags({ AuthMcpRegistrationError: ... }) and the same form for the other two calls.

Serialize concurrent relinks before cleaning old secrets.

Two concurrent link calls can leave one unused secret in ServerSecretStore. A post-upsert reread alone does not prevent this: call A can reread its own row before call B overwrites it, so neither call removes A's secret.

resolve reads only the secret named by the current row, so the orphan is not an application-reachable authorization bypass. It is stale bearer-secret retention. unlink removes only the current row's secret, and expiration does not remove secrets.

If unused orphan credentials are intentional, document that policy and leave this code unchanged. Otherwise, serialize the read, upsert, and cleanup for each environment with a lock or transaction that prevents another link from reading the row until cleanup completes.

Clean up the new secret if the row write fails.

link writes the token under secretName before the upsert. If readRow, encodeUrls, or the INSERT fails, nothing references the token. It then stays in the secret store indefinitely. The peer has already issued a live session for it. Remove secretName when a later step fails.

🔴 Critical peer/PeerLinks.ts:152

OAuth requests can send the pairing code, authorization code, and PKCE verifier to an untrusted HTTP host. peerOrigin validates only the initial origin, while clientFor uses a redirect-following HTTP client, so a 307 from an HTTPS peer can resend the request body in cleartext; disable redirects for these requests or validate each redirect destination before following it.

🟡 Medium peer/PeerLinks.ts:365

If readRow or the upsert fails after secrets.set succeeds, link leaves the new bearer token permanently orphaned in the secret store: no row records secretName, so unlink and later relinks cannot remove it. Clean up secretName when the row commit fails.

Question about peerOrigin in apps/server/src/peer/PeerLinks.ts. Plain http is accepted only for loopback and Tailscale hosts. DirectEndpoints draws the line somewhere else: it advertises numeric private-network addresses, VPN ranges included, as plain-HTTP routes that carry the client's credential, and keeps only public addresses off them:

These routes are plain HTTP and carry the client's credential, so a public address would send it across the internet unencrypted

Is the stricter rule for links deliberate? If it isn't, accepting isPrivateNetworkHost here as well would match it.

Our case: two machines on the same LAN, plus a laptop that reaches home over a plain WireGuard tunnel (not Tailscale), at fixed 192.168.x addresses. Linking them today means putting a TLS front in front of every server, while the client connection to those same servers already runs over plain HTTP on the same network. We're carrying that one-condition change locally for now.

The keeps released migrations contiguous test fails because migrationEntries now includes migration 64, but the test still expects only 63 IDs. Update the expected length to 64 in 055_OrchestrationV2.test.ts so the migration test suite passes.

Hi Julius! I maintain a fork of T3 Code adapted for working with large teams of agents and people inside a managed corporate environment. In the last few weeks we shipped peering between servers and I wanted to flag a couple of things that broke our first design and may also impact yours.

1. A machine that nothing can reach. A common setup for us is an always-on work VM plus a laptop behind a corporate firewall that drops every inbound connection. The laptop can open HTTPS out through the office proxy; the VM can never connect to the laptop. Links handle laptop → VM well: the laptop opens every connection, and the follower in #16719 waits on the VM's thread for the result. The reverse needs a separate link from the VM to the laptop, and behind that firewall the laptop can be reached only through an outbound tunnel such as Connect or Tailscale. A task the laptop delegated couldn't use that link either, since linked work never uses links (assertNotLinked in PeerForwarding), so it can't reach back to the laptop.

Is Connect meant to be the answer for that direction? We doubt it would survive a managed work laptop: cloudflared dials Cloudflare on port 7844 rather than going through the office's HTTPS proxy, and security teams commonly flag an unsanctioned cloudflared as a tunnel out of the network.

2. A machine that's off when work arrives, such as a laptop that sleeps or a server the desktop app runs. A forwarded call is synchronous, so a t3_thread_send, or the launch step of a remote delegate_task, to a sleeping box fails back to the agent. The agent has to remember to retry, which #16654's clientRequestId makes safe. The follower's backoff covers results, not the first call. Our direct mode has the same gap today: a direct send to a sleeping peer gives up after about a second, which is part of why we added polling.

We ended up with two modes, chosen per pair of servers when they're peered (this page draws both):

  • Send directly: each side connects to the other, which is what links do today.
  • Poll: the side that can't be reached, or may be off, opens every connection, including for its own sends, using ordinary outbound HTTPS. The reachable side stores messages for it until it polls. A poll is held open for up to 25 seconds, so a waiting message arrives within moments while the poller is up. The polls double as presence (online if it polled in the last two minutes), so the sender's send succeeds with "recorded; the other server is offline, last available N minutes ago" instead of an error.

The client that introduces the two servers picks the mode. It asks each server to reach the other at the addresses that server reports for itself, and checks how each one is run (desktop app, service, or started by hand). It then recommends a mode, asks only what the check couldn't settle, and lets the person set it up differently.

Our definition is cross-device.md, and the session where we added poll mode tells the story. This isn't a request to adopt it; Connect may cover most setups for you. Happy to compare notes.

Taking over this one for maintainer batch ssh-relay-remote-15. I will rebuild its mode-limit, launch-retry and peer-link layers on current main, repair the occupied migration and capability recheck, then verify two isolated servers before publishing a replacement stack. No merge or unverified push.

Thanks @juliusmarminge for the peer-link design and working CLI/OAuth path. I rebuilt it because main’s migrations and orchestration APIs moved, and the mode-limit and launch-retry prerequisites need separate review. I compared the original diff against the stack: link/list/get/relink/unlink, protected RPCs, credential persistence and live identity/capability probing are retained in the peer layer; occupied migrations are preserved by using 065. The mode and retry prerequisites are below it, with durable-preparation recovery and current caller checks repaired.

Replacement, bottom to top: #21670 (per-request mode ceilings) → #21671 (durable launch retry) → #21672 (peer pairing, RPC/CLI and migration 065) → #21673 (agent forwarding and bounded thread Stop).

Current corrected stack passed 192 focused tests in 11 files; Opus independently passed 74 tests in four files. Both reviewers re-audited the entire 58-file stack with no source blocker. Two isolated production server processes verified OAuth mode narrowing, pre-bearer refusals, lost replies and process-restart replay, old Stop keys leaving new runs alone, and a 105-second mock-provider run through 50/50/10-second waits. Latest complete CI passed; cancelled superseded runs remain visible, and neutral approval checks are not called green. Current sanitized proof.

Closing this PoC in favor of those unmerged replacements. Human permission-policy approval and real two-host TLS/relay/tunnel plus macOS, Windows, Electron, iOS and Android checks remain. Remote delegate_task is explicitly outside the forwarding layer. No merge performed.

Takeover: GPT-6.1-sol/Codex in T3 Code; tests GPT-6-Astra, reviews Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol.

Re the Macroscope finding on PeerLinks.ts (resolve not checking the answering peer still enforces mode limits): not changing this layer. #16695 in the same stack adds exactly that check, so resolve refuses as incompatible when the answering descriptor lacks mcpModeLimitHeader/linkFence, and the stack lands together.
