Linked environments were available through the server stack but had no Connections UI. This layer adds web pairing and confirmed local forgetting, a mobile read-only list, and thread-origin labels on both clients.

Preserves @juliusmarminge's original work in #16698, with maintainer fixes on top. It remains based on t3code/peer/link-origin at 37b2d54670; that prerequisite must land first. Main lacks its peer-link contracts and models. No parent branch was changed or flattened.

The UI selects every connected, readable host advertising peer-link support, including remote-only hosts. Older servers receive no unsupported list request. Link and Forget use the shared destination-scoped access:write command guards and server authorization. Cancel and other idle close requests reset address, pairing code and access; pending operations guard closing and disable the controls. Restricted-access guidance now matches the parent's fence rules. Mobile excludes disconnected catalog entries and advances expiry while focused and on resume.

Forget removes the local link; revoking its authorized client on the peer is a separate action. Reachability and membership are query-time snapshots, refreshed after this client's mutations and normal query remounts. This does not add continuous remote health polling; local expiry labels still advance.

Verification

Reviewed head: e9ed401dc1.

  • PR-touched tests: 82 cases / 3 files → 78 / 2, preserving all 76 parent cases. PR-added cases 6 → 2: a real command/query lifecycle with destination permission changes and list invalidation, plus remote-only Settings search. Deleted four isolated helper assertions and replaced the permission table. Six controlled regressions failed the intended assertions.
  • 108 tests / 4 files passed, including the parent peer service and server authorization suites. Scoped typechecks passed for web, mobile, client-runtime, contracts and server. All 18 changed TypeScript paths passed lint (nine existing warnings on untouched lines); all 20 changed paths passed formatting.
  • Two independent whole-layer review rounds each used GPT-6 Sol and Claude Opus 5.5. The final round found no required changes. The optional polling request was declined because each list probes every peer, and this UI promises snapshots rather than continuous remote health.
  • Actual Linux browser against two isolated real servers: OAuth pairing with Supervised access, persisted linked row and reachability probe, Cancel/reopen reset, Settings search, and confirmed Forget with immediate list refresh. The remote authorized-client session remained after Forget, verified separately through the peer CLI.
  • Actual bearer sessions, HTTP WebSocket tickets and server RPC: read-only credentials can list but both mutations fail with access:write authorization errors. Write credentials reach the service. Sanitized observations and boundaries.

Evidence

Matched Connections captures use the same data, viewport (1280×1000) and scroll position. Before serves the verbatim base ConnectionsSettings component through a Vite load override; other modules and the real backend remain at the reviewed head. This is a component baseline, not a full base checkout.

Real pairing produced this reachable link:

After: real paired environment with Supervised access and local Forget

Cancel/reset recording — enter dummy address/code, select Full access, cancel, reopen blank with Supervised restored.

Forget confirmation recording — shows the reachable row and local-versus-remote revocation guidance. The subsequent empty list and unchanged remote session were checked separately.

The origin label below uses a projection-only fixture on an idle isolated thread, written with the server stopped. It proves presentation of supplied origin metadata, not production linked-agent attribution.

After: thread displays supplied linked-environment origin

Remaining human gates

Prerequisite landing, current-head CI and human approval remain required. Current-head Macroscope Correctness succeeded (10 changed code objects, no findings); Approvability is NEUTRAL / Needs Human Approval for the cross-machine workflow and authorization scope. PR Size and Vouch succeeded. GitHub currently reports mergeability unknown and retains a stale synthetic merge ref whose parents match neither this head nor base; the CI workflow has not started for this head. This is an outstanding GitHub merge-ref/CI gate, not a passing CI result. Native iOS/Android, Electron desktop, macOS/Windows, production T3 Connect relay and tunnel paths were not run on this headless Linux host. Multiple connected hosts, grant changes while open, pending-close behavior and unreachable/failing/expired rows were source-reviewed rather than driven live. Actual linked-agent thread attribution still needs an integrated pass. This PR is unmerged.

Tests: GPT-6 Astra via Codex. Implementation and integration: GPT-6.1 Sol via Codex. Independent reviews: GPT-6 Sol via Codex and Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code.

End-to-end run, two real servers

Two t3 serve processes from the top of this stack, each with its own data directory, on one machine. A laptop (port 3971) and a box (port 3972). Their projects are clones of one bare origin, so they share a repository. An outside agent (OAuth with a pairing code) drives the laptop's /mcp, and real Claude Sonnet 5.5 turns run on both sides. The last part repeats the run over Tailscale HTTPS (a *.ts.net HTTPS address).

The Linked environments section shows what peerLinks.list reports. During the run, that list (read through t3 environment list) went through every state the section shows:

  • reachable with its expiry;
  • unreachable with "cups did not answer at a *.ts.net HTTPS address." after the tailnet route went away;
  • the revocation reason "The linked environment no longer accepts this link…".

The thread-header badge reads linkOrigin, which was set on every thread the link started (see #16695).

Screenshots of the section and the badge are still to come. They need a browser.

Opus 5.5 via Claude Code.

LinkedEnvironmentsSettings is hidden from sessions with access permissions but no maintenance scope, while maintenance-only sessions see it even though its list and link actions fail authorization. Gate this section on the relevant access permissions instead of canManageLocalBackend.

Fixed. The section now shows for every connected environment that has peerLinks and grants access:read. peerLinks.link/unlink are in CLIENT_GUARDED_RPC_SCOPES, and Link and Forget follow their permission atoms.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds a substantial cross-environment execution capability with OAuth pairing, credential storage, remote MCP forwarding, authorization fencing, persistence migrations, and broad changes to existing orchestration paths. Its auth/security scope and runtime blast radius require human review.

Match the search gate to the rendered section.

A maintain-scope gate is required, but it is not sufficient. ConnectionsSettings also requires primaryServerConfig?.environment.capabilities.peerLinks === true. Without that gate, the result can navigate to Connections with #linked-environments, but no section handles the target, so the page does not scroll or focus the requested setting.

Add a peerLinks availability value derived from the primary environment and use it with localBackendManagementOnly.

Fixed. Added a peerLinksOnly availability gate, filled from the environments that would render a section, with a test.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. The peerLinksOnly gate now matches the environments that render the section. That addresses this finding.

🌐 Web query:

Base UI React Dialog Popup keepMounted default multiple dialogs modal

💡 Result:

1For **Base UI React `Dialog`**:
2
3- **`keepMounted` defaults to `false`**: the dialog portal is removed from the DOM when closed. Set it on **`<Dialog.Portal keepMounted>`**, not `<Dialog.Popup>`. The current docs put it on the Portal; Base UI’s older v1.6.0 API reference also lists the Portal default as `false`. ([base-ui.com](https://base-ui.com/react/handbook/animation))
4- **Dialogs are modal by default** (`modal={true}`). Modal behavior traps focus, locks page scrolling, and blocks outside pointer interaction. ([base-ui.com](https://base-ui.com/react/components/dialog))
5- **Multiple dialogs:** Base UI supports nested dialogs; child dialogs omit their own backdrop. It also added support for multiple **non-nested** modal backdrops in v1.0.0-alpha.6. ([base-ui.com](https://base-ui.com/react/components/dialog))
6
7So if you’re asking whether `keepMounted` is on by default: **no**. If you mean whether multiple modal dialogs can be open: **supported**, though nested dialogs are the documented pattern for layered confirmation flows.

Use a per-dialog ID for the access label.

When two link dialogs are open, both popups are mounted and the fixed link-environment-access-label ID is duplicated. aria-labelledby can then resolve to the other dialog’s label. Derive the label ID from the existing formId.

Keep the link dialog open while a link request is pending.

If a user closes the dialog with Escape or its close icon while busy is true, onOpenChange clears the form but the link command continues. A later success can create the link after the dialog closes. If the user reopens the dialog first, that success also clears and closes the new form. Reject close requests while busy is true; keep the explicit close after success. Base UI routes these close actions through onOpenChange. (base-ui.com)

Fixed in ff9cf8c0d5: the dialog now ignores close requests while a link is in flight. The link-request dialog (web) and sheet (mobile) added in #17129 had the same gap and got the same guard.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for fixing this in ff9cf8c0d5 and applying the same guard to the web dialog and mobile sheet from #17129.

🟢 Low settings/LinkedEnvironmentsSettings.tsx:272

Clicking Cancel closes the dialog without clearing the address, pairing code, or selected access, so reopening the still-mounted form retains those values, including any higher-privilege access choice. The Cancel handler only calls setOpen(false) and bypasses the reset in onOpenChange; reset the fields when Cancel is clicked too.

Fixed in e9ed401dc1. Cancel uses DialogClose and the shared guarded close/reset handler, clearing the address and code and restoring Supervised access. Busy controls prevent pending close requests; successful linking calls the same reset handler. Verified Cancel/reopen in the actual app: recording. Both independent final reviewers rechecked this fix.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch ssh-relay-remote-13. I will rebuild the client layer in place on its existing peer-server base, reduce tests to the observable behaviors, verify the web flow and server integration, and publish proof and remaining platform limits. I will leave the prerequisite branches unchanged and keep their landing dependency explicit.
