Selected thread: apps/server/src/peer/PeerLinks.ts:353 — **🔒 Security & Privacy** | **🟡 Minor** | **⚡ Quick win** **Clean up the new secret if the row write fails.** `link` writes the token under `secretName` before the upsert. If `readRow`, `encodeUrls`, or the `INSERT` fails, nothing references the token. It then stays in the secret store indefinitely. The peer has already issued a live session for it. Remove `secretName` when a later step fails. <details> <summary>Proposed fix</summary> ```diff - const urlsJson = yield* encodeUrls(origins).pipe(Effect.catch(failStorage)); - const previous = yield* readRow(peer.environmentId); - yield* sql` + const persist = Effect.gen(function* () { + const urlsJson = yield* encodeUrls(origins).pipe(Effect.catch(failStorage)); + const previous = yield* readRow(peer.environmentId); + yield* sql` ... - `.pipe(Effect.catch(failStorage)); + `.pipe(Effect.catch(failStorage)); + return previous; + }).pipe( + Effect.tapError(() => secrets.remove(secretName).pipe(Effect.ignore)), + ); + const previous = yield* persist; ``` </details> <!-- suggestion_start --> <details> <summary>📝 Committable suggestion</summary> > ‼️ **IMPORTANT** > Carefully review the code before committing. Review comment at @apps/server/src/peer/PeerLinks.ts around lines 324 - 353: In the link flow, failures from encodeUrls, readRow, or the peer_environment_links upsert after storing secretName leave an unreferenced secret behind. Handle failures in these post-write steps by removing secretName from secrets before propagating the original failure; keep successful persistence and previous-secret cleanup unchanged. After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local review. 🔴 Critical peer/PeerLinks.ts:418

resolve releases the linked peer's bearer token to any endpoint that returns the same public environmentId, so an attacker controlling a saved address can copy that descriptor and obtain a credential replayable against the real peer with the link's permissions. The descriptor is unsigned, so this equality check does not authenticate the peer; verify an authenticated peer identity before returning the token.

3`resolve` releases the linked peer's bearer token to any endpoint that returns the same public `environmentId`, so an attacker controlling a saved address can copy that descriptor and obtain a credential replayable against the real peer with the link's permissions. The descriptor is unsigned, so this equality check does not authenticate the peer; verify an authenticated peer identity before returning the token.
J

Not changing here. The descriptor check is not what authenticates the peer; the transport is. Since this PR's review fixes, a link's addresses can only be https, loopback or a Tailscale address, all chosen when the link is made, and the token is only ever sent to those. Receiving it means presenting a valid certificate for that hostname, being that node on the tailnet, or being on this machine, which is the same bar as receiving any client's bearer for that environment. The descriptor match then stops a moved or reused address that does pass the transport from getting the token. Pinning the peer's identity (a key in the descriptor, signed by the server) would add defense in depth; that is a protocol change across both servers, so it is left for a follow-up and flagged for the maintainer.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject plain http: peer addresses that are not loopback.

peerOrigin accepts any http: URL. link sends the pairing code and receives the access token over that origin. PeerMcpClient then sends Bearer ${token} to it on every call. For a LAN address over plain HTTP, any observer on the network can read the pairing code and the long-lived token. The descriptor check does not stop this, because a passive observer does not need to answer as the peer. Allow http: only for loopback hosts. Tailscale addresses can be an explicit exception if the project wants that. Require https: for all other hosts.

Fixed. Plain http:// is refused unless the host is loopback or a Tailscale address (100.64/10, fd7a:115c:a1e0::/48, *.ts.net), for primary and alternate URLs. Tested.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for confirming the fix and tests. Restricting plain HTTP to loopback and Tailscale addresses for both primary and alternate URLs addresses this finding.

🟡 Medium peer/PeerLinks.ts:189

When an OAuth request loses connectivity or returns an incompatible response, link reports pairing_rejected instead of unreachable or incompatible. The register, decision, and token error mappings convert every failure to PeerLinkError before the outer catch can classify HttpClientError and SchemaError; preserve those errors for that classifier and map only endpoint rejections to pairing_rejected.

Fixed. Only the peer's own OAuth refusals (AuthMcpRegistrationError, AuthMcpApprovalError, AuthMcpTokenError) become pairing_rejected. Transport errors fall through to unreachable and schema errors to incompatible.

Do not build the error message from cause.

storageError puts String(cause) into message. This message reaches RPC clients and the CLI. The guideline says the message "is fixed or built from those attributes, never from cause". Keep cause as a field and use a fixed message.

As per coding guidelines: "The message is fixed or built from those attributes, never from cause, cause.message, or a stringified defect."

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the fix. A fixed client-facing message with server-side cause logging addresses the concern.

Fixed. Storage failures now carry a fixed message; the cause is logged on the server.

Successful peer calls that return multiple text blocks are reported as version-mismatch failures even when they include a valid result in structuredContent. This code concatenates the blocks and parses them as one JSON document; decode structuredContent when present, using the text only as a fallback.

A relative or malformed decided.redirectTo makes new URL throw a defect, so link fails without returning the promised PeerLinkError. The surrounding Effect.catch does not handle defects; parse the redirect in the typed error channel and map invalid URLs to a PeerLinkError.

Fixed. The redirect is parsed with URL.parse; one that doesn't parse is an incompatible PeerLinkError, not a defect.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clean up the new secret if the row write fails.

link writes the token under secretName before the upsert. If readRow, encodeUrls, or the INSERT fails, nothing references the token. It then stays in the secret store indefinitely. The peer has already issued a live session for it. Remove secretName when a later step fails.

7In the link flow, failures from encodeUrls, readRow, or the
8peer_environment_links upsert after storing secretName leave an unreferenced
9secret behind. Handle failures in these post-write steps by removing secretName
10from secrets before propagating the original failure; keep successful
11persistence and previous-secret cleanup unchanged.

🔴 Critical peer/PeerLinks.ts:152

OAuth requests can send the pairing code, authorization code, and PKCE verifier to an untrusted HTTP host. peerOrigin validates only the initial origin, while clientFor uses a redirect-following HTTP client, so a 307 from an HTTPS peer can resend the request body in cleartext; disable redirects for these requests or validate each redirect destination before following it.

🟠 High peer/PeerLinks.ts:270

Concurrent link calls for the same environment can leave the database row describing one access level while resolve returns the other link's token, so a read-only link can authorize full-access calls. The credential write at secrets.set and the SQL upsert are separate, unsynchronized operations; serialize link and unlink mutations per environment across the server and CLI processes so the stored metadata and credential stay paired.

Fixed. Each link's token now goes under a random name that the row records, written before the row points at it, and relinking removes the old one. A row can only name its own token, across the server and CLI processes. A test forces two links to interleave and fails with a shared name.

The keeps released migrations contiguous test fails because migrationEntries now includes migration 64, but the test still expects only 63 IDs. Update the expected length to 64 in 055_OrchestrationV2.test.ts so the migration test suite passes.
