feat(web,mobile): @-mention a machine as a context chip#17130

Part of cross-environment orchestration. A user can type @ and part of a machine's name, as in "hand off work to my @box", and the composer inserts a chip for that T3 Code environment. The agent learns exactly which machine is meant, so it can delegate there straight away, or ask to link it with the card from the previous PR.

How it works

  • Contracts. New context kind environment with EnvironmentContextRecord {environmentId, label}, beside the thread chip. Only identity travels, never an address.
  • What the agent sees (formatComposerContextProviderPayload): the label, the environmentId, and one sentence: this is a T3 Code environment the user means; if it isn't linked here, call t3_environment_link with this id, then pass the id to delegate_task, t3_thread_launch and the other tools.
  • Web.
    • The @ menu offers the user's other environments, with their machine icon and a "Machine" label, beside threads and files. Like threads, they appear once you type part of a name; a bare @ stays the file picker.
    • Picking one inserts a chip with the icon and label.
    • Mentioned machines live in an environmentContexts draft slice next to thread contexts: persisted, restored on undo, failed sends and plan follow-ups, imported on paste, and rendered in the composer and in sent messages.
  • Mobile. The @ popover offers the same machines (shared matcher matchComposerEnvironmentItems), inserts a chip, and lists it in the context sheet. Sent messages draw it natively. The record doesn't carry the machine kind, so every machine chip in message text uses one server glyph. iOS uses the system symbol; Android has a hand-drawn glyph that needs a native build.
  • Every switch over context kinds now has a decision for environment.

Verification

  • Shared composerContextReferences.test.ts: the provider payload for a machine chip carries label, id and the instruction, and no address.
  • Web composerDraftStore.test.ts: a machine chip round-trips through the draft store (persist, restore, send). The removal and restore paths were mutation-checked.
  • Client-runtime composerThreadItems.test.ts: matching machines by name. Contracts composerContext.test.ts: the new kind decodes and encodes. Mobile nativeMarkdownText.test.ts: the native chip payload.
  • Per-layer check of the whole stack: this layer typechecks clean, and 380 server tests pass. Contracts, shared, client-runtime, web and mobile typecheck clean. The client tests touched here pass (282).

Real client (web, laptop and box dev servers, Codex GPT 6.0 Astra):

Typing @bo lists box as a machine beside matching threads:

The @ menu shows three threads and "box · Machine" with the server icon

The composer reads "Hand off work to my [box chip] and add a SHIPPING_FEE = 5 export to pricing.ts there."

Box already linked: the agent calls t3_environment_link with the chip's environmentId, gets linked back at once with no card, delegates, and the export lands on the box:

The sent message shows the box chip; the agent reports "Completed on box", and Lineage shows the task on box · Done

Box not linked yet: the same chip makes the agent ask for that machine. The card skips the machine list and opens on box. After the user picks the access, the agent is woken, delegates, and MIN_ORDER lands on the box:

The card "Link a machine to this environment" with Review link…

The dialog titled "Link box" goes straight to the access levels

Linked box · Auto-accept edits, then the notification turn delegates and reports the task finished on box

Not verified on mobile in a real client here; the mobile code typechecks and its tests pass.

🟠 High chat/ChatComposer.tsx:4185

Selecting an environment mention while answering a pending question adds its record to the ordinary thread draft, so a later ordinary send includes that machine even though the thread prompt does not reference it. applyPromptReplacement routes the text to the question answer, but this branch adds the record to composerDraftTarget, and the question path in onPromptChange does not reconcile it; disable this selection during questions or store and reconcile the context with the answer.

Still true after the earlier change, so fixed in 3666271a4f: while the composer answers an agent's question, the @ menu offers no machines and a pasted machine chip is dropped. An answer carries thread links only, so a machine record had nowhere correct to go.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This adds machine mentions as a new context workflow across the web and mobile composers, including persisted state, message serialization, UI chips, and model instructions for linking or delegating to environments. The cross-platform state and orchestration integration make this broader than a small isolated additive change.

🟡 Minor · Transport machine records with their prompt references. · ChatComposer.tsx:3145

apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx:3145 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Transport machine records with their prompt references. Clipboard copies and prompt stashes currently export machine-chip text without the environment record. A destination draft cannot recover the environment ID from that reference alone.

  • apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx#L3145-L3145: include referenced composerEnvironmentContexts in clipboard fragments.
  • apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx#L4977-L4977: include composerEnvironmentContexts in stashed records.
  • apps/web/src/composerDraftStore.ts#L4324-L4324: when stashing transfers the machine record, clear its reference and record from the source draft rather than retaining a second chip there.

Preserve the environment ID in legacy plan follow-ups.

When inlineMessageContext is unsupported, onSubmitPlanFollowUp passes context directly to startThreadTurn. Older servers drop these records and forward the links as literal text. The current legacy serializer also cannot preserve this new record: it replaces an environment reference with its label and emits no environment block. The agent therefore cannot rely on receiving the structured environmentId needed to link or delegate to the selected machine.

Read the capability at dispatch, as ordinary sends do. For unsupported servers, use a legacy format that includes the environment label, environmentId, and the existing link/delegation instruction. Extend the legacy serializer and upgrade path for environment records before using that fallback here; adding only the capability check would still lose the machine identity.

Not changing this here. Plan follow-ups send every chip kind (terminal, review comment, thread) the same way on main, without the inlineMessageContext check; machine chips follow that path. A server without inline context also has no peer links, so a machine reference there has nothing to act on. If plan follow-ups should serialize for legacy servers, that is one fix for all chip kinds, separate from this PR.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for clarifying. Machine chips use the existing plan follow-up path, and servers without inline context have no peer links to act on machine references. This is not a machine-chip regression. I withdraw this finding from this PR.

Any legacy serialization change should cover all chip kinds together. Would you like a follow-up issue for that shared behavior?

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, servers without inlineMessageContext support also lack peer links, so they cannot act on machine references for linking or delegation. In apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx, assess legacy plan follow-up serialization as a shared concern across chip kinds, not as a machine-chip-specific requirement.

Write queued-edit machine records to the edited draft.

When props.draftKey is set for a queued-message edit, the editor uses composerDraftKey, but the menu uses composerOwnerKey. Selecting a machine puts its reference in the edited message and its record in the ordinary thread draft. The edited message therefore has no matching environment payload. Pass composerDraftKey as ownerKey.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Fixed in 3666271a4f: the menu writes to the composer's draft key, so a queued edit's machine chips land with the edited text.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. The menu and editor now both use composerDraftKey, so queued-edit machine records stay with the edited text.

Include machine records when exporting composer context. Copy and stash both export a machine reference without its EnvironmentContextRecord. If a user pastes or restores that text in another draft, the chip has no matching record and the agent does not receive the machine ID.

Restore environment records when reverting a message.

If “Edit from here” restores a message with a machine chip, this path restores its text but not its message.context environment record. The chip then lacks the environment ID needed on resend. Restore the environment records from the source message alongside the prompt.

Copying a machine chip produces no environment record in the clipboard fragment, so pasting it into another draft leaves a reference with no machine payload. buildContextClipboardFragment collects thread contexts but omits composerEnvironmentContexts; include the selected environment records in the fragment.

Two suggestions from a screen reader user, in case they fit this stack or a later PR.

Right now the only way to attach a thread from another environment is to drag it from the sidebar onto the composer, and there's no keyboard equivalent:

  • The sidebar drag only registers a pointer sensor (Sidebar.tsx).
  • The @ thread picker only lists threads from the composer's own environment (composerThreadItems.ts).
  • A thread chip pasted from another environment is silently dropped (ChatComposer.tsx).

I run into this between the desktop app's Windows and WSL environments.

Once agents can read linked environments (#16684), these might close the gap:

  1. List linked environments' threads in the @ picker, alongside the machines this PR adds. Picking one would give the agent both the environment and the thread ID, and it would work from the keyboard on web and mobile.
  2. Include the environment when copying a thread ID (Ctrl+Shift+C or "Copy thread ID"). Today it copies only the bare ID, so the ID only works on the server that owns the thread.

Taking over this one for batch composer-chat-17: verification preflight is blocked, so I have not changed or pushed this branch.

Current head: 2b63f76e22, based on the unmerged t3code/peer/agent-link layer. Main still lacks the environment context record. This is a persisted cross-client context feature, and the Android chip glyph changes native code. Rebuilding the linking/native layers would exceed this batch's target scope.

The T3 Device tool returned exactly: “Agent device access is turned off for this environment.” I ran no new test or native client pass for this PR and do not claim the author's existing proof as a new verification. The original native and unlinked-machine gaps remain.

Coordinator handoff:

  1. Integrate the required linking and native-chip layers, then rebuild this feature on that accepted base without dropping environment identity in draft/undo/failed-send/queued-edit/paste paths.
  2. Enable Device access on the test host. From that checkout run node scripts/mobile-native-client.ts ensure ios <device-id> and the equivalent android command, then start the isolated backend and mobile Metro.
  3. On web and both native clients, type a partial machine @-mention, send it, verify the exact environment ID reaches the provider, and exercise linked and initially unlinked destinations. Verify native chip display/removal and draft persistence through restart; capture before/after and a short linking/delegation recording.
  4. Run scoped contracts/shared/client-runtime/web/mobile typechecks, lint and the context/draft/matcher suites on the integrated head.

Human approval and landing now belong to the central coordinator. No watchers started; nothing merged.
