Problem

Tests bumped their own timeout (it(name, fn, 60_000)) or were skipped with no tracking issue. Both hide waits that should be event-driven, and a skip with no owner never comes back.

Fix

  • New rule t3code/no-test-timeout-or-unreasoned-skip: flags a numeric or {timeout, retry} argument on it/test/describe/hooks, vi.setConfig({testTimeout}), and .skip/.only/.todo without a leading // quarantine: #issue comment. skipIf/runIf platform gates stay allowed. *.live.test.* provider probes keep their timeouts (they run real agents for minutes behind env gates).
  • Removed 58 overrides across 17 files; one suppression on the env-gated recovery benchmark.
  • Root vitest config: allowOnly: !CI, explicit retry: 0, full fakeTimers.toFake set.
  • AGENTS.md Verifying section lists the concrete rules and names the five lint rules that enforce them.

Part of the anti-flake stack (#22563). Context: main was red in ~600 of ~2,900 runs since September; the genuinely flaky tests all waited on real time, scheduler budgets, or renderer frames. These rules make those tests fail lint instead of CI.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

The changes add lint and Vitest rules for test timeouts, retries, focused tests, and skips. They remove explicit timeouts from several tests and add GitManager coverage for fork pull request detection.

Define and enforce test policies
AGENTS.md, oxlint-plugin-t3code/index.ts, oxlint-plugin-t3code/rules/*, vite.config.ts
Test guidance, a new Oxlint rule, plugin registration, and Vitest configuration define timeout and skip constraints. Rule tests cover accepted and rejected patterns.

The new lint rule now covers suite aliases and skip/only options, including in live test files. It can still be bypassed with a named-constant or computed timeout argument. Two CPU-heavy coverage suites now run under a 60 s timeout and may be flaky on slow runners. Both are low-impact issues that can be tracked after merge.

Keep a project-level timeout for the filesystem-heavy CLI test.

The CLI closure test walks the pnpm store and can exceed the root timeout on the concurrent Windows lane. Removing its 120_000 timeout leaves it under testTimeout: 60_000 with retry: 0, so it can fail before its assertions complete. Use a project-level timeout or split the filesystem-heavy work instead of restoring a per-test override.

Keeping it under the project timeout on purpose. The CLI closure test ran in well under 60 s on the Linux lane and locally; the Windows lane (windows-tests.yml) is manual-dispatch only and already excludes apps/server. If a cold pnpm-store walk ever exceeds 60 s there, the fix is to make the walk cheaper or split it, not to restore a per-test override, which is exactly the pattern this rule bans. The mobile reactCompilerCoverage describe ran in 3.3 s.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for clarifying. My Windows timeout claim lacked evidence, and the CLI finding was misplaced on the mobile test.

I withdraw the finding. Keep the existing project timeout. If the pnpm-store walk exceeds that limit, optimize or split the walk rather than increase the timeout.

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, scripts/lib/cli-external-packages.test.ts intentionally uses the existing project timeout. If its pnpm-store traversal exceeds that limit, optimize or split the traversal rather than recommend a larger project timeout or a per-test override. Removing an old timeout override alone is not evidence of a timeout regression.

Recognize the suite alias.

When a test imports Vitest’s suite alias, suite.skip("name", fn) passes this rule without a quarantine comment. chainRoot returns "suite", which TEST_FUNCTIONS rejects. Add suite to the recognized roots so its skip, focus, and timeout forms receive the same checks as describe. Vitest documents suite as a describe alias. (vitest.dev)

Check skip and focus options in test declarations.

When a test uses test("name", { skip: true }, fn), this rule accepts an unreasoned skip. The options check only looks for timeout and retry. Check literal skip, only, and todo options and apply the quarantine requirement when they enable those states. Vitest supports these test options. (vitest.dev)

This early return exits the entire `CallExpression` visitor before the option-object checks; gate only timeout reporting on `checkTimeouts` so quarantine checks still run.

Fixed: the live-file exemption now covers only the timeout checks; option-object skips are reported everywhere. Rule test added.

Detect computed and named positional timeout arguments.

isNumericLiteral only accepts a numeric Literal. Therefore, beforeEach(fn, TEST_TIMEOUT) and it("x", fn, 60 * 1000) can bypass the rule.

For hooks, report a second argument when the first argument is the callback. For tests, report any third argument when the second argument is the callback. Keep the existing object-option checks for { timeout } and { retry }.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟑 Minor | ⚑ Quick win

Do not skip the quarantine check for options in live test files.

In *.live.test.* files, checkTimeouts is false. Line 103 then returns before the skip check on Lines 137-142. As a result, test("x", { skip: true }, fn) and it("x", { only: true }, fn) pass in live files without a quarantine comment. In the same files, the MemberExpression handler still reports test.skip(...). The live-file exemption is meant to cover timeouts only, so the two spellings of the same skip behave differently. Apply the checkTimeouts condition to the timeout reports only.
