Problem

Browser tests waited on requestAnimationFrame, setTimeout-in-Promise, transitionend, or partially faked timers. Those race the renderer on a loaded runner; WorkflowOpeningBlock, AttachmentFilePreview, AcpRegistrySearchStep and ComposerBannerStack all failed on main this way.

Fix

 • New rule t3code/no-frame-waits-in-browser-tests for apps/web/**/*.browser.test.*: flags rAF outside spies, timers inside new Promise, transitionend/animationend listeners, raw vi.useFakeTimers, and partial toFake sets.
 • Rewrote 16 test files to assert through expect.element/vi.waitFor/expect.poll, or to install the full fakeTimers() and advance frames explicitly. Each touched file passed 3 consecutive runs.
 • One suppression (MessagesTimeline negative check that must outlast two settle frames).

Part of the anti-flake stack (#22563). Context: main was red in ~600 of ~2,900 runs since September; the genuinely flaky tests all waited on real time, scheduler budgets, or renderer frames. These rules make those tests fail lint instead of CI.

📝 Walkthrough

The Oxlint plugin adds a rule that reports selected wait patterns in browser-test files. Vite enables the rule for web browser tests. Tests cover reported patterns, allowed patterns, and non-browser-test files.

Changes: Browser Test Wait Lint Rule

Layer / File(s)Summary
Detect browser-test wait patterns
oxlint-plugin-t3code/rules/no-frame-waits-in-browser-tests.ts
The rule checks browser-test files for selected frame and timer waits, transition or animation listeners, and incomplete fake-timer configurations. It ignores non-browser-test files and frame calls inside mocks.
Register, enable, and test the rule
oxlint-plugin-t3code/index.ts, vite.config.ts, oxlint-plugin-t3code/rules/no-frame-waits-in-browser-tests.test.ts
The plugin registers the rule, and Vite enables it as an error for web browser-test files. Tests cover allowed and reported patterns, plus the non-browser-test exemption.

47## 1. Introduction
48
49This section is non-normative.
50
51Responsive Web Components need to respond to `Element`'s size changes. An example is an `Element` that displays a map:
52
53 * it displays a map by tiling its content box with `Element` tiles.
54
55 * when resized, it must redo the tiling.
56
57Responsive Web Applications can already respond to viewport size changes. This is done with CSS media queries, or window.`resize` event.
58
59The ResizeObserver API is an interface for observing changes to Element’s size. It is an `Element`'s counterpart to window.`resize` event.
60
61ResizeObserver’s notifications can be used to respond to changes in `Element`'s size. Some interesting facts about these observations:
62
63 * Observation will fire when watched Element is inserted/removed from DOM.
64
65 * Observation will fire when watched Element display gets set to none.
66
67 * Observations do not fire for non-replaced inline E…[truncated]</excerpt>

97<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Published: 6.7 years ago; Crawled: last month; Thus, a JavaScript solution was required. ... A script creates a `ResizeObserver` with a callback which will be called with ‘observations’, and registers/unregisters callbacks using `.observe(element)`, and `.unobserve(element)`. ... The callback provided to the constructor is called with a collection of observerEntries which contain data about the state of CSS boxes being observed, if those boxes actually changed size. ... The browser starts a rendering update, and runs the steps up to and including the Intersection Observer steps. ... Any changes that are related to something deeper down in the tree are delivered at once, while any that are not are queued up and delivered in the next frame, and an error message will be sent to the Web Inspector console: (`ResizeObserver loop completed with undelivered notifications`).
98Here’s how that happens:
99
100 1. Boxes are created.
101 2. Layout happens.
102 3. The browser starts a rendering update, and runs the steps up to and including the Intersection Observer steps.
103 4. The system gathers and compares the box sizes of observed element with their previously recorded size.
104 5. `ResizeObserver` callback is called passing `ResizeObserverEntry` objects containing information about the new sizes.
105 6. If any changes are incurred during the callback, then layout happens again, but here, the system finds the shallowest at which depth a change occurred (measured in simple node depth from the root). Any changes that are related to something deeper down in the tree are delivered at once, while any that are not are queued up and delivered in the next frame, and an error message will be sent to the Web Inspector console: (`ResizeObserver loop completed with undelivered notifications`).
106 7. Subsequent steps in the rendering updates are executed (i.e. painting happens).

112<excerpt>citeturn0search3 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; Javascript DOM manipulation stays in sync with viewport size by listening to `window.resize` event. ... #### What triggers a resize notification? ... Framework authors could provide a developer-friendly 'event-like' based API on top of ResizeObserver to avoid registering too many observers. ... Read WebRenderingPipeline first to understand how the current rendering pipeline works. ... Callback changeset should list elements in order of registration. ... Developers will be able to use ResizeObserver to observe visibility.
113
114The revised pipeline
115
116The new resize notification callbacks fire once per frame after layout. The callbacks necessarily have to run between the Layout and Paint phases. If a layout is forced (e.g. during a setTimeout), then the callbacks do not fire until we run the whole pipeline before putting up a frame. So, for example, this means that a setTimeout will never be able to inject itself between the requestAnimationFrame and the resize observers.
117
118The callbacks themselves can (and will) modify style and tree structure, so we need to run the whole Layout phase in a loop so that changes made during this frame actually get in before the paint. While looping is a little concerning, we already have this pattern in the platform (e.g. MutationObservers, Promises) and it hasn’t caused undue problems. The loop completes when the Notify step doesn’t dirty any style or layout state.
119
120## Error handling
121
122ResizeObserver will keep delivering resize notifications in a single frame, until no further notifications are available.

129Restrictions and Clarifications
130
131 1. From the perspective of an `IntersectionObserver`, the skipped contents of an element are never intersecting the intersection root. This is true even if both the root and the target elements are in the skipped contents.
132
133 2. From the perspective of a `ResizeObserver`, the skipped contents of an element never change their size. If these elements become non-skipped later, the resize observation will be delivered if the new size differs from the last size used to notify the resize observer.
134
135 3. If an element starts or stops skipping its contents, this change happens after the requestAnimationFrame callbacks of the frame that renders the effects of the change have run. Specifically, such changes will take effect between steps 13 and 14 of Update the Rendering step of the Processing Model (between “run the animation frame callbacks” and “run the update intersection observations steps”).

Capture the pre-expansion height synchronously.

nextResize records its baseline only in the first asynchronous ResizeObserver callback. If that callback runs after userEvent.click(showMore), it records the expanded height, so expandedSizeDelivered can remain pending.

✅ Addressed in commit 72956b3

Fixed: nextResize reads the baseline height synchronously from getBoundingClientRect() before observing, so a callback that already sees the expanded size resolves instead of becoming the baseline.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. Capturing the baseline before observing addresses the race where the first callback sees the expanded height.

Detect timers passed directly as Promise executors.

If a browser test uses await new Promise(setTimeout), the NewExpression visitor does not report it. The timer visitor also sees no CallExpression in the test source. Include setTimeout and setInterval in this executor check so the rule rejects this timer wait.

8Update the Promise executor check in the NewExpression visitor to report
9executors named requestAnimationFrame, setTimeout, or setInterval. Preserve the

✅ Addressed in commit 72956b3

Fixed: new Promise(setTimeout) and new Promise(setInterval) are now reported alongside requestAnimationFrame as pass-through executors, with a rule test.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for fixing both pass-through timer executors and adding a rule test.

🟢 Low rules/no-frame-waits-in-browser-tests.ts:135

A direct requestAnimationFrame executor inside vi.fn is reported as a frame wait, while the equivalent callback executor is exempted, so mock implementations fail lint based on executor syntax. This branch does not check isInsideMock; apply that exemption to executor here as well.

Fixed: the Promise-executor check now skips nodes inside a mocking call, matching the callback form. Rule test added.
