Problem

Tests asserted "finishes within N ms" with performance.now(), or built fixtures from Date.now(). Elapsed-time assertions pass or fail with runner load; live timestamps make fixtures drift.

Fix

  • New rule t3code/no-wall-clock-in-tests: flags performance.now(), process.hrtime, Date.now(), and zero-arg new Date() outside vi.spyOn/vi.setSystemTime/mock arguments.
  • 33 sites in 19 files: timing assertions dropped (the behavioral assertion next to them stays), fixtures use fixed epochs, fake-clock seeds are constants. Two suppressions on the env-gated recovery benchmark.

Part of the anti-flake stack (#22563). Context: main was red in ~600 of ~2,900 runs since September; the genuinely flaky tests all waited on real time, scheduler budgets, or renderer frames. These rules make those tests fail lint instead of CI.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 595c604

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable โ€” This PR makes tests deterministic by removing live wall-clock reads and adds a tested oxlint rule to prevent them from returning. The changes are limited to test code and development/CI lint tooling, with no shipped product behavior or defaults affected.

The PR adds and enables an Oxlint rule that detects wall-clock reads in test files. Several server, mobile, and web tests now use fixed timestamps or a mocked clock.

Changes: Test clock determinism

Layer / File(s)Summary
Wall-clock rule and lint integration
oxlint-plugin-t3code/rules/no-wall-clock-in-tests.ts, oxlint-plugin-t3code/rules/no-wall-clock-in-tests.test.ts, oxlint-plugin-t3code/index.ts, vite.config.ts
The Oxlint plugin adds and registers a rule that reports wall-clock reads in test files, with exemptions for reads used in mocking calls. Rule tests cover permitted and prohibited cases. The lint configuration enables the rule at error severity.
Fixed test timestamps and clock values
apps/server/src/serverRuntimeState.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/home/useThreadListActions.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/onboarding/WelcomeWizard.import.browser.test.tsx, apps/web/src/hooks/useThreadActions.undo.test.ts
These tests replace runtime-derived timestamps with fixed values. The web onboarding test also mocks Date.now() to return its fixed timestamp.

Rule exempts any wall-clock read nested anywhere inside a mocking call.

isMockArgument walks all ancestors. A read that sits inside any vi.fn(...), vi.spyOn(...), or .mockImplementation(...) call is allowed, even when the read measures elapsed time. Example: vi.fn(() => { const t = performance.now(); ...; assert(performance.now() - t < 10) }). The rule is a lint guard, so false negatives are low impact. Narrow the walk if you want stricter enforcement, for example stop at the first enclosing function that is not the direct mock argument. [recommended_refactor]

Re CodeRabbit's nitpick on isMockArgument: leaving as is. A wall-clock read inside a mock implementation is the mock faking a clock, which is the one place the rule must allow; a timing assertion inside a vi.fn body is contrived and would be caught in review. Narrowing the walk would start flagging the vi.spyOn(Date, "now").mockImplementation(() => performance.now()) shape that the fixed tests rely on.

Restore the Date.now spy after each test.

setup() installs a fixed Date.now() result, and both tests call setup(). No local cleanup or applicable Vitest configuration restores the spy. A later same-worker test can therefore receive the fixed NOW value instead of the real clock.

Fixed: setup() returns the spy and both tests hold it with using, so it is restored when each test ends.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the fix. Both tests now use using to restore the Date.now spy when each test exits, including on failure. No afterEach hook is needed.

Use a clock-relative expectation for the snooze fixture.

The test now treats 2099-01-01T09:00:00.000Z as active for every system date. The production executor instead skips the snooze when Date.parse(step.snoozedUntil) <= Date.now(). When the test runs with the clock at or after 2099, correct production behavior will omit the snooze, but this assertion will still expect it.

Set a fixed system clock for the test or derive the fixture and expectation relative to the mocked clock.

Leaving as is. The table's fixture dates are 2000 and 2099; the test runs correctly for the next 73 years, and pinning the system clock here would add a second time source to a test whose point is that it no longer reads one.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the guidance. The 2000 and 2099 fixtures cover the intended cases without a mocked clock. My concern about the 2099 boundary is not actionable here, so I withdraw the finding.

Do not request a mocked system clock solely to address the eventual 2099 boundary; the maintainer accepts that horizon and prefers avoiding additional clock setup.
