The React Compiler skipped the thread detail screen (which hosts the feed, composer and overlays), the tablet/foldable thread navigation sidebar, and the list's shelf preferences hook.

FileWas skipped forFix
ThreadDetailScreen.value = on SharedValues passed to hooks; draft-message and end-follow refs written during render; try/catch around a conditional in the edit-pending handler.set(); refs written in layout effects (their reads are in timers and handlers); the handler is a promise chain
ThreadNavigationSidebarsettled-list reset key kept in a ref read during renderstate, adjusted during render
use-thread-list-v2-shelf-preferencesshelf-expanded refs written during renderwritten in a layout effect

Frozen-clock fix in ThreadNavigationSidebar. This is the same shape as Home in #21133: list derivations read new Date() during render, and a snooze-wake timer re-arms off their output. The clock is now state, advanced by the minute interval and by the wake timer.

Manual useMemo/useCallback/memo are removed from all three files. KNOWN_BAILOUTS: 18 β†’ 15.

Verified on device (Pixel 9 API 36 emulator, isolated server, real Claude provider):

  • Thread detail: sent a turn and queued a follow-up while it ran. Both replied; the queued one ran on its own.
  • Home: expanded and collapsed the Settled shelf (the shelf-preferences toggle).
  • No red box, and no useMemoCache or React errors in the Metro log.
  • The sidebar only shows on wide layouts. This phone-sized emulator renders the compact list, so the sidebar was not on screen.

Renders while a reply streams in the open thread (measure-renders stream scenario, median of 3, same base and device):

BeforeAfter
renders17731714
commits4138
runs1296 / 1773 / 20121714 / 1720 / 1674

No measurable change in the median. The spread is narrower after, but with three runs and variable provider output I wouldn't read anything into that. ThreadFeed is still on KNOWN_BAILOUTS, and it is the biggest remaining lever for streaming.

Review follow-up

  • Shelf toggles call savePreferences({ transform }), which reads the optimistic value, so the three *ShelfExpandedRef syncs are gone. draftMessageRef is gone (the artifact-template append is idempotent, so props are enough). endFollowEnabledRef is written where follow state changes instead of in a layout effect. Pending-message edit uses settlePromise.
  • On device: Settled shelf toggles once per tap. Two taps in the same frame leave it unchanged and three flip it, so rapid toggles don't collapse into one write.

Settled shelf expanded

Device: Pixel 9 API 36 emulator on nucbox-1, client rebuilt from perf/mobile-compile-8 (the old one lacked the T3FoldPosture native view), Metro and an isolated seeded server on cups.

The React Compiler skipped the thread detail screen (which hosts the feed, composer and overlays), the tablet/foldable thread navigation sidebar, and the list's shelf preferences hook.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at f2ebeea

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable β€” This is a localized React Compiler/performance refactor that removes manual memoization while preserving existing thread, sidebar, and preference workflows. The additional clock and optimistic-toggle adjustments are small, self-contained runtime corrections, with no schema, product-default, sensitive-area, or static-analysis suppression changes.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

Thread detail and sidebar code no longer memoize the listed derived values and handlers. Shelf toggles now transform the current preference value. The compiler coverage test removes the three thread files from its bailout allowlist.

Changes: Thread UI rendering and state

Layer / File(s)Summary
Thread detail rendering and interactions
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadDetailScreen.tsx
The screen is no longer wrapped in memo, and its derived values and handlers are no longer memoized. Pending-message edits now settle and inspect the result, displaying the existing alert on failure. The end-follow ref updates with its state, and artifact-template insertion uses the current draft prop.
Sidebar list, filters, and timing
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadNavigationSidebar.tsx
Derived values and handlers are evaluated during render. The clock stores an ISO timestamp, and settled-item pagination resets when the environment, project, or trimmed query changes.
Shelf toggles and compiler coverage
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/use-thread-list-v2-shelf-preferences.ts, apps/mobile/src/reactCompilerCoverage.test.ts
When preferences are loaded, shelf toggles invert the current preference through a transform. The compiler coverage test removes the three thread files from its bailout allowlist.

Unstable scheduleOverlayRepin makes the effect rerun on every render.

scheduleOverlayRepin is now recreated on every render. It is listed in the dependency array of the effect on Lines 694-710. The effect therefore runs after every render.

The early-return guard still prevents most repins. The guard compares previousWorkingControlStateRef with the current state. Because the effect runs on every render, any render where the thread key or showFloatingStatus changed is handled correctly. No functional break is visible. The dependency is now meaningless, and the effect has no real dependency contract.

If the React Compiler memoizes the function, this is harmless. If it does not, the dependency array is misleading. Use a stable reference through useEffectEvent, which the sibling PRs in this stack already use. Then remove scheduleOverlayRepin from the dependency list.

On CodeRabbit's nitpick about scheduleOverlayRepin in ThreadDetailScreen.tsx (lines 709–710): not changing it. This file now compiles with the React Compiler, which caches the function. Compiled with Metro's preset and the same caller flags as reactCompilerCoverage.test.ts:

js
1if ($[134] !== freeze || $[135] !== scrollMessageToEnd) {
2 t40 = (delayMs) => { /* clear and reschedule the repin timer */ };
3 ...
4} else {
5 t40 = $[136];
6}
7var scheduleOverlayRepin = t40;

So it keeps its identity across renders, and the effect only reruns when freeze, scrollMessageToEnd, the thread key or showFloatingStatus change. That's the dependency contract the effect means. Moving it to useEffectEvent would also be correct, but it isn't needed, and it would make this layer's diff bigger than "make the file compile".
