perf(mobile): home, workspace layout and overlay pieces compile with the React Compiler#21133
Home, the adaptive workspace layout and the overlay portal were skipped by the React Compiler. So was the thread list's action hook.
| File | Was skipped for | Fix |
|---|---|---|
useThreadListActions | six try/finally blocks around in-flight guards | the guarded body is an async function, cleanup in .finally() |
HomeScreen | settled-list reset key kept in a ref read during render | state, adjusted during render |
WorkspaceConnectionTitle | useRef(new Animated.Value(0)).current | useState initializer |
AdaptiveWorkspaceLayout | inspector render function written to a ref during render | written in a layout effect, which runs before the focus effect that reads it |
workspace-pane-divider | latest-props ref read while building the pan gesture | gesture built once, callbacks through useEffectEvent |
workspace-inspector-pane | assigning .value on a SharedValue prop | .set() |
OverlayPortal | ??= and a module counter in render | key allocated once in a useState initializer |
home-list-options | manual memo deps | manual memo removed |
Frozen-clock check. Home read new Date() inside its list derivations, and the snooze-wake timer re-arms off their result. Without manual memo deps, the compiler would cache those derivations on their other inputs and freeze the clock. That is the same 50 ms loop fixed in 7f7d639. The clock is now state: the minute interval advances it, and so does the snooze-wake timer, so the next wake boundary always moves forward. A 70 s idle measurement on Home showed 18 commits total, no loop.
Manual useMemo/useCallback/memo are removed from every file listed. KNOWN_BAILOUTS: 66 β 58.
Verified on device (Pixel 9 API 36 emulator, isolated seeded server):
- Home renders, scrolls, and expands the Snoozed shelf.
- The filter menu drills into Environment (Menu + OverlayPortal).
- Rows open their thread.
- Idle for 70 s with no runaway commits.
- No red box, and no
useMemoCacheor React errors in the Metro log. - Not verified: swipe and long-press on rows.
adbinput on this emulator registers both as taps onmainas well, so I couldn't drive them. The swipe file (thread-swipe-actions) is not in this layer.
Renders while loading each screen (measure-renders --route, median of 3, same base and device):
| Route | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
/ (Home) | 466 | 466 |
/settings (over Home) | 1335 | 1335 |
No measurable change in the mount-and-settle window.
Review follow-up
- Thread list actions (archive/settle/snooze/wake/regenerate title/move) await commands and clear their in-flight keys inline; no
.finally. wrappedRenderRefis gone. Inspector registration reads the pane throughuseEffectEvent.- On device: Home renders on the rebuilt client, and swipe actions weren't exercised.
Device: Pixel 9 API 36 emulator on nucbox-1, client rebuilt from perf/mobile-compile-8 (the old one lacked the T3FoldPosture native view), Metro and an isolated seeded server on cups.

official React useEffectEvent documentation only call inside Effects invocation contract

| 1 | The official React docs define the contract this way: |
| 2 | |
| 3 | - Call `useEffectEvent` itself at the top level of your component or custom Hook. |
| 4 | - Call the function it returns only inside an Effect (`useEffect`, `useLayoutEffect`, or `useInsertionEffect`) or another Effect Event in the same component. |
| 5 | - Donβt call it during render or from an event handler, and donβt pass it to another component or Hook. ([react.dev](https://react.dev/reference/react/useEffectEvent?utm_source=openai)) |

Do not call Effect Events from gesture handlers.
The pan gesture invokes handleResizeStart, handleResize, and handleResizeEnd through runOnJS outside a React Effect. These callbacks are useEffectEvent handlers, which React restricts to Effects. Replace them with stable JavaScript callbacks backed by a committed ref for current props.

Create swipeRowActivation once with a useState initializer.
createSwipeRowActivation() returns a stateful object. It holds activeKeys, listTouches, pendingKeys and the subscriber listeners. The object now persists between renders only because the compiler caches the call.
If the compiler does not compile this file, every render creates a new object. SwipeableScrollGateProvider then gets a new activation. Touches that are still in progress and pending activations are lost. Row subscriptions point at the old object.
This PR already uses the useState initializer for the same problem in WorkspaceConnectionTitle, OverlayPortal and StatusFadeIn. Use it here too.

Keep the focus subscription stable.
useEffectEvent does not stabilize the callback passed to useFocusEffect. When this hook rerenders while focused, React Navigation cleans up that callback and runs the new one. The cleanup deactivates the inspector, and setup registers it again. This adds inspector state updates on routine rerenders, contrary to the comment. Stabilize the focus callback; keep syncRegistration for changes to the renderer. (github.com)
