The React Compiler skipped the thread composer, the thread route screen, the queue control, and the composer state hook. Those are the screen and hooks that re-render while a reply streams.

FileWas skipped forFix
ThreadComposer, ThreadRouteScreen, ThreadQueueControl, state/use-thread-composer-statetry without catch (7 sites)the guarded body is an async function, with .finally() chained
ThreadRouteScreeninspector-toggle action ref written during renderwritten in a layout effect
ThreadQueueControlqueue drag handle read its latest-props ref while building the pan gesturecallbacks through useEffectEvent; the gesture is rebuilt only when disabled changes

Manual useMemo/useCallback/memo are removed from all four files. The remaining clock read in ThreadComposer sits in a press handler, not in render. KNOWN_BAILOUTS: 22 β†’ 18.

Verified on device (Pixel 9 API 36 emulator, isolated server, real Claude provider):

  • Opened a seeded thread, typed in the composer, and sent a turn; the reply streamed in.
  • While it ran I queued a second message. The queue pill showed "1 queued", and the message was sent "from queue" when the turn ended.
  • No red box, and no useMemoCache or React errors in the Metro log.

Renders while a reply streams in the open thread (measure-renders stream scenario, median of 3, same base and device):

BeforeAfter

commits3435
runs1682 / 1249 / 13021243 / 1343 / 1876

No measurable change. Provider output length varies, so each side's own spread is wider than the difference between them. ThreadFeed, which renders the messages, is still on KNOWN_BAILOUTS, so the streaming hot path is mostly unmemoized either way.

Review follow-up

  • Queue reorder/steer/remove/resume, merge back, work locally and queued-edit save await commands directly. The send lock and prepareTurnAttachments (which can throw) use settlePromise. A failed upload during a queued edit now alerts instead of leaving the save spinner up.
  • inspectorToggleActionRef is gone; the toggle reads inspectorMode at call time.
  • Not exercised on device: no provider runs on the isolated server.

Device: Pixel 9 API 36 emulator on nucbox-1, client rebuilt from perf/mobile-compile-8 (the old one lacked the T3FoldPosture native view), Metro and an isolated seeded server on cups.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

Thread composer, state, route, and queue code replace memoized calculations and callbacks with direct declarations. Selected async operations change how they process results and clear busy state. The compiler coverage test no longer lists the updated files as known bailouts.

Changes: Mobile thread compiler coverage

Layer / File(s)Summary
Composer and composer state
apps/mobile/src/state/use-thread-composer-state.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadComposer.tsx
Derived values and handlers are declared or calculated directly. Sending releases the in-flight lock after either result. Queued-edit attachment preparation resets saving state and reports preparation failures.
Thread route handlers and renderers
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadRouteScreen.tsx
Route calculations, handlers, and inspector renderers are no longer memoized. Merge-back and work-locally busy refs can remain set when awaited commands reject.
Queue commands, drag gesture, and compiler coverage
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadQueueControl.tsx, apps/mobile/src/reactCompilerCoverage.test.ts
Queue busy state clears after commands complete normally. The drag gesture uses useEffectEvent callbacks. The coverage test no longer lists the updated files as known bailouts.

Change: Refactor

Suggested reviewers: maria-rcks

Merge Risk: πŸ”΅ Low Β· up to 390da

The change is mostly a compiler-compatibility refactor with no confirmed functional regression. The queue drag gesture calls effect-event callbacks in a way React documents as unsupported, which may fail lint checks or break in future React versions. It is mergeable once the owner is aware or restores the latest-props ref approach.

React 19.3 useEffectEvent official documentation can only be called from Effects lint rule

πŸ’‘ Result:

1Yes. React’s official documentation says a `useEffectEvent` function may be called **only inside an Effect or another Effect Event in the same component**. Don’t call it from an event handler, during render, or pass it to a child; `eslint-plugin-react-hooks` enforces this restriction. ([react.dev](https://react.dev/reference/react/useEffectEvent?utm_source=openai))
2
3The docs specifically allow calls inside `useEffect`, `useLayoutEffect`, and `useInsertionEffect`. For a callback meant for an event handler or child, use a regular function or `useCallback` instead. ([react.dev](https://react.dev/reference/react/useEffectEvent?utm_source=openai))
4
5React 19.3 was released September 9, 2026; the current docs state this restriction, though they don’t label it as new to 19.3. ([react.dev](https://react.dev/blog/2026/09/09/react-19-3?trk=article-ssr-frontend-pulse_little-text-block&utm_source=openai))

Do not call Effect Events from gesture callbacks.

Gesture.Pan() invokes these functions from gesture callbacks, not from an Effect or another Effect Event. This violates the useEffectEvent contract. Restore the latest-props ref for these handlers.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval β€” This broad mobile React Compiler migration changes production gesture, callback, effect, and async cleanup behavior across four files rather than being test-only or purely mechanical. An unresolved concern about invoking Effect Events from gesture callbacks requires human review.
