The React Compiler skipped the file and review screens, plus three remaining settings pieces. They all shipped unmemoized.

FileWas skipped forFix
FileMarkdownPreview, SourceFileSurface, ReviewSheettry/finally around pull-to-refresh.finally() on the refresh promise
useNativeReviewDiffHighlightingconditional inside try.then().catch() chain, same error handling
reviewDiffRenderingreassigning offset while mapping tokensstart offsets computed by a plain helper first
FileTreeBrowserref written during renderwritten in an effect
SettingsAuthRouteScreenhasBeenSignedIn ref read during renderstate set during render (the documented "adjust state on prop change" pattern)
SettingsDragHandlerefs read while building the pan gesturegesture built once in a useState initializer, callbacks through useEffectEvent
SettingsScheduledTasksRouteScreenoptional chaining in a ternary testearly return
AttachmentFileScreen, ThreadFilesRouteScreen, useFileTreeEntriesmanual memo deps the compiler couldn't preservemanual memo removed

Manual useMemo/useCallback/memo are removed from every file listed. KNOWN_BAILOUTS: 78 → 66.

Verified on device (Pixel 9 API 36 emulator, isolated seeded server):

  • Thread Files: tree loads, expanded docs/, opened README.md in Source view (highlighted), switched to Preview from the file menu, pulled to refresh.
  • Review changes: diff renders with syntax highlighting and word-diff marks; scrolled, pulled to refresh, and marked a file viewed (it collapsed).
  • Microphone settings: dragged CarPlay above Built-in by its handle (reordered), then dragged it back.
  • Scheduled tasks: list and the new-task editor open; typed into the prompt.
  • Auth requires Clerk config, which this dev build lacks, so the route falls back to Settings, unchanged from main.
  • No red box, and no useMemoCache or React errors in the Metro log.

Renders while opening each screen from Home (measure-renders --route, median of 3, same base and device):

RouteBeforeAfter
thread files tree17141714
files/docs/README.md567567
thread review11831233
/settings/microphone10281028
/settings/scheduled-tasks962962

No measurable change. The review median is within the base's own run-to-run spread (1133 to 1233). The mount windows are dominated by first renders, which memoization can't skip.

Review follow-up

  • The file preview, source file and review pull-to-refresh, review file navigation and native diff highlighting use settlePromise. Review refresh is a plain await, because it never rejects.
  • The file tree reads selectedPath at press time instead of mirroring it into a ref from an effect.
  • Not exercised on device: the seeded threads' worktrees aren't present on cups.

Device: Pixel 9 API 36 emulator on nucbox-1, client rebuilt from perf/mobile-compile-8 (the old one lacked the T3FoldPosture native view), Metro and an isolated seeded server on cups.

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This is a broad production mobile React Compiler migration that also changes authentication-state rendering and gesture callback plumbing. An unresolved functional concern remains around the gesture callback contract, so the runtime-sensitive changes warrant human validation.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes remove React memoization from mobile file, review, and settings components. They also update review token-offset calculation, settings state and gesture handling, async result handling, and React compiler bailout coverage.

Changes: Mobile React updates

Layer / File(s)Summary
File preview and route rendering
apps/mobile/src/features/files/AttachmentFileScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/files/FileMarkdownPreview.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/files/ThreadFilesRouteScreen.tsx
Handlers, derived media values, and menu actions are computed during render instead of being memoized. File selection and navigation retain their existing behavior. Markdown refresh uses settlePromise and clears the spinner after awaiting it.
File tree and source rendering
apps/mobile/src/features/files/FileTreeBrowser.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/files/useFileTreeEntries.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/files/SourceFileSurface.tsx
Tree and source values, handlers, and render functions are no longer memoized. File selection uses the controlled path captured by the current render. Source refresh uses settlePromise and clears the spinner after awaiting it.
Review sheet and diff rendering
apps/mobile/src/features/review/ReviewSheet.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/review/reviewDiffRendering.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/review/useNativeReviewDiffHighlighting.ts
Review components and derived values are recomputed during render. Diff token offsets come from a cumulative-length helper. Native highlighting and file navigation use settlePromise; a rejected refresh leaves the refreshing state set.
Settings interactions and compiler coverage
apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsAuthRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsScheduledTasksRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/components/SettingsDragHandle.tsx, apps/mobile/src/reactCompilerCoverage.test.ts, apps/mobile/uniwind-types.d.ts
The auth screen tracks prior sign-in with state. The drag handle uses effect events and a gesture initialized once. The compiler coverage test removes bailout expectations for six files, and the generated types file gains a generated-file notice.

Change: Refactor

Suggested reviewers: saphid

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 095ca

This change compiles the mobile file, review, and settings screens with the React Compiler. It removes manual memoization and reworks refresh and selection handling. One earlier concern about how the settings drag handle invokes its callbacks is still open and should be confirmed or fixed. Nothing else currently blocks merging.

official React 19.3 useEffectEvent documentation only call within an Effect event handler contract

💡 Result:

1React 19.3’s official docs say **Effect Event functions may only be called from inside Effects or other Effect Events** in the same component—not during render, from a regular event handler (such as `onClick`), or after passing them to another component or Hook. Use a regular function or `useCallback` for those cases. ([react.dev](https://react.dev/reference/react/useEffectEvent?utm_source=openai))
2
3The docs list `useEffect`, `useLayoutEffect`, and `useInsertionEffect` as valid call sites. React identifies 19.3 as the latest version, while noting its docs aren’t published separately for each minor or patch version. Use ordinary callbacks for gesture handlers.

useEffectEvent functions may only be called from Effects or other Effect Events. The gesture callbacks call them from .onStart, .onUpdate, and .onFinalize, so this violates the React contract. Keep the committed props in a ref and call those props directly from the gesture callbacks.

Preserve the directory cache across renders.

directories is recreated on every render. The [directories] cleanup therefore aborts every pending expanded-directory request. loadDirectory calls render(), which rerenders the hook. FileTreeBrowser then invokes the new onLoadDirectory for each expanded path, restarting the request. The replacement request can trigger the same cycle, so expanded directories may never populate.

Keep the mutable directory state stable at this hook boundary, such as with the hook’s existing memoization strategy, while preserving the cleanup when cwd or environmentId changes.

Keep directories stable across internal renders.

loadDirectory adds the controller to directories.pending and immediately calls render(). The new directories object then changes the cleanup dependency, so the cleanup aborts that in-flight request. The aborted callback returns before storing entries, and the expanded-path effect can start the load again.

Restore the existing memoization at this changed site:
