fix(mobile): the drawer surface is only for a sidebar beside a page#27289

The gray drawer surface marked the workspace lists wherever they sat in the native primary column, and the folded Duo used it for the whole workspace. A collapsed split shows that column as the page itself. On the folded Duo the lists were gray, and Settings' light page left a gray strip under the vertical bar.

The primary column now has the sidebar pane role only while the split shows columns. The thread list, the PR list and the column paint the drawer surface only in that role. Everywhere else the workspace uses the screen surface Settings already used. That removes useWorkspaceSurface, the folded Duo's own surface rule.

Before, on the folded Duo: the gray strip in Settings, and the gray thread list. Before: folded Duo Settings with a gray strip under the vertical bar Before: folded Duo thread list on the gray drawer surface

Not checked on a device yet: the pool's Duo simulator does not get past the dev launcher's deep-link prompt. Its preview is labeled for testing.

Part of the workspace split. Stacked on #27229.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Drawer styling is now limited to actual sidebars, with additional selection and dark-theme contrast adjustments. Human confirmation is needed for the changed default mobile appearance, including folded-Duo page surfaces and shared palette colors.

The iOS navigator and mobile screens now use pane roles and split-view state to determine sidebar presentation. Settings and workspace screens use explicit background classes. Android theme variables and floating navigation colors receive contrast adjustments.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: the drawer surface now applies only to a sidebar beside a page. The raw summary and objectives confirm that the drawer surface is limited to the sidebar pane role, and that the workspace uses the screen surface elsewhere. The title uses the conventional commit form and identifies the area (mobile).

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the problem (the gray drawer surface shows in collapsed layouts and on the folded Duo), the change (the sidebar pane role applies only in split layouts, and useWorkspaceSurface is removed), and verification (before screenshots and a note that device testing was not completed). It does not follow the template's Scope and approval section: it links no triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion and gives no exemption rationale. It also does not state the after-state screenshots that the UI-change rule requires, and the verification section does not report observed results for the after state. The PR is stacked on another PR, which the template does not cover.

Resolution

Add a Scope and approval section that links the triaged bug issue or maintainer-approved discussion, including the approval comment. If the change qualifies as a small, focused fix of an obvious bug, explain why no prior issue is needed. Add after-state screenshots or a short recording for the UI change, and state the observed results for the changed behavior. Confirm that the Verification section covers the changed behavior on the folded Duo and in split layouts, or state what could not be checked. Also replace the description's references to the 'pool's Duo simulator' and to a stacked PR with plain statements the template can use.

Preserve other contentStyle fields.

When a settings route supplies contentStyle fields besides backgroundColor, this assignment replaces the entire style and drops those fields. SettingsScreen accepts the full AppBarProps.options, and AppBar forwards those options to NativeStackScreenOptions. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Merge the existing style and override only backgroundColor.

Forward the selected surface through the native workspace column.

SettingsScreen applies bg-screen or bg-sheet only to its React views. The native workspace ColumnScreen receives the merged route options but does not pass options.contentStyle.backgroundColor to ColumnContent. Therefore, a reachable Settings detail page can draw bg-sheet inside a detail column that remains bg-screen, leaving a visible strip around the page with the wrong surface.

Passing the color through AppBar options alone is not sufficient. Preserve unrelated contentStyle fields when creating the Settings options, then forward the effective background color from ColumnScreen.

The contentStyle override in SettingsScreen that this outside-diff finding (reviewed at f1d7704) refers to is gone in 49f8b13. That layer was reworked so the drawer surface follows the pane role instead, and SettingsScreen no longer sets contentStyle. Nothing left to merge.

Use sidebarSurface for the row layout animation.

A collapsed primary page has primaryColumn !== null but pane role "content". The current condition can apply the 180 ms THREAD_SIDEBAR_ROW_LAYOUT transition to that page when rows change layout. This does not change final row geometry, but it creates an incorrect user-visible animation.

In the T3 Chat dark theme, this changes the selected row from #362d3d to #261922 against the #171018 drawer. The contrast falls from about 1.42:1 to 1.11:1, making the active page difficult to distinguish. Use a selected surface that remains distinct from the drawer. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

JJulius Marminge4d ago

Fixed in f4aa058: selected rows now reach at least 1.2:1 against the drawer on every platform, so iOS T3 Chat dark is no longer 1.11:1, and the Settings sidebar shares that surface.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for confirming the fix in f4aa058. The reported shared-surface contrast change addresses this Settings sidebar finding.

Keep selected-row text readable after changing the background.

In the default Android light theme, this changes the selected background to #ececec but leaves --color-thread-selected-foreground-muted at #71717b. Their contrast is about 4.1:1, below the repository’s 4.5:1 requirement. Android renders selected thread rows, including environment labels and errors, with this color.

Recalculate the selected foreground against the new background.

8Update the selected-row color handling in the theme variables logic so
9--color-thread-selected-foreground-muted is recalculated against the updated
10--color-thread-selected background, preserving at least 4.5:1 contrast in the
11default Android light theme.

Fixed in f4aa058: both selected-row foregrounds are recomputed against the new selected surface and are covered by a 4.5:1 assertion for every theme and platform.

CcoderabbitaiBot4d ago

@juliusmarminge The supplied code recomputes both selected-row foregrounds against the final selected surface. This addresses the finding. Thanks for adding the 4.5:1 assertions across themes and platforms.
