On Android the filter button moved between pages. Android headers were drawn several ways: Threads and PRs used a React Native row, Usage used the Compose TopAppBar through AppBar, and 23 features plus Sheet and SheetHeader used AndroidScreenHeader or AndroidSheetHeader directly. Each path sized its buttons on its own. On a Pixel 9, Usage's filter sat about 13px further right and 2px lower than Threads', and on a Pixel 7a Settings' scope filter sat about 14px further right and drew smaller.

AppBar is now the only way a feature draws a header on Android.

  • Workspace tabs share one bar. Inside a workspace scope, AppBar.android projects into one persistent TopAppBar above the tab panes (WorkspaceAppBar.android, in the phone layout and the foldable sidebar). Search and filter are Compose icons in fixed slots, so a tab switch only changes their contents. React Native views hosted in Compose lag Compose's layout by a frame when their size changes, and Expo UI applies a child insert or removal a frame before the other children's props, so the slot count never changes. search.xml, filter.xml and filter-filled.xml are our existing Tabler icons with strokes expanded to fills, because Expo UI's vector parser has no stroke support.
  • One contract. AppBar gains titleContent, leading, embedded and sheet variants (which leave route options alone, as the direct calls did), controlled search, and subtitle/destructive/overflowOnly actions. Every former AndroidScreenHeader and AndroidSheetHeader call, Sheet.android and SheetHeader.android go through it.
  • Filters are AppBar menus. Threads, PRs, Usage and the settings scope filter pass menus rather than hand-built triggers. Scheduled tasks' undersized "New task" button is an action. appBarMenuItemsFromActions adapts the existing MenuAction builders, including icon colors.
  • Inline search (Archived threads) is the standard search overlay held open, not its own React Native row.
  • A lint rule stops features from importing AndroidScreenHeader or the workspace bar.
  • Only bars with search register for hardware back, so sheet headers rendered outside navigation (Arrange threads) still work.
  • ThreadListToolbar is Android-only (.android.tsx plus an iOS stub), which breaks an iOS import cycle through AppBar.

iOS is unchanged, except that embedded and sheet bars render nothing there. Every converted call site is in an Android-only branch.

Header crops on a Pixel 9. Top: main, Chats then Usage. Bottom: this PR, Chats then Usage

Verification (pool emulators, dev client on head 338ac79, bundle checked for the new code)

Pixel 9 headers: Chats, Pulls, Usage, Settings, Scheduled tasks, Providers

  • Pixel 9: across 185 recorded frames of switching Chats, Pulls, Usage and Settings, the filter stays at x 983–1029, y 114. Settings → Scheduled tasks, Providers, Projects and Threads match. Thread, PR detail, git controls sheet and Archived threads (inline search) put their trailing button in the same slot. Archived threads sits 1px right.
  • Pixel 9 Pro Fold, open: the sidebar bar's filter is at x 768–810 on Chats, Pulls and Settings. Closed (cover display): all 44 frames across the four tabs share one box.
  • Galaxy Z Fold 8, open: the sidebar filter is at x 874–920 on Chats, Pulls and Settings. Closed: all four tabs are at x 1151–1197.
  • On both folds when open, Usage is a full-width page, so its filter sits at the screen edge, not in the sidebar. That layout predates this PR.
  • Arrange threads only appears on project-group menus, which the test data doesn't produce. AppBar.android.test.tsx covers rendering its sheet bar outside navigation.
  • Tests cover the menu adapter round trip and the sheet bar outside a navigator.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The refactor unifies Android headers and keeps workspace search/filter controls in stable slots. It also adds two lint-suppression directives in WorkspaceAppBar.android.tsx that require human review.

Walkthrough

The changes extend Android AppBar with search, menu, native-action, and workspace-header support. Android screens and sheets switch to AppBar. Settings routes pass environment filters as menus.

Changes: Shared Android AppBar

Layer / File(s)Summary
AppBar contracts and rendering
apps/mobile/src/components/ui/AppBar.types.ts, apps/mobile/src/components/ui/AppBar.android.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/ui/AppBar.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/ui/NativeAppBar.android.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/ui/menuActionItems.ts, apps/mobile/src/components/ui/headerMenu.android.ts, apps/mobile/assets/icons/*, apps/mobile/src/components/ui/*test*
AppBar adds controlled search state, title and leading content, embedded and sheet options, menu fields, native action slots, search overlays, and menu conversion. Tests and Android icon assets are added.
Workspace app bar and toolbar integration
apps/mobile/src/components/ui/WorkspaceAppBar.android.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/*, apps/mobile/src/features/home/ThreadListToolbar*, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestToolbar.android.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadNavigationSidebar.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/home/HomeHeader.android.tsx
Workspace tabs publish header content to a scoped app bar. Home and pull-request toolbars provide search and filter actions. The thread sidebar updates filter callbacks and sticky-header sizing.
Settings environment menus
apps/mobile/src/features/settings/components/*, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/*RouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/usage/UsageRouteScreen.tsx
Settings screens receive environment filters through the AppBar menus prop. The environment-menu hook returns selectable items, and scheduled-task creation uses a SettingsScreen action on Android.
Screen and sheet header migration
apps/mobile/src/components/ui/AndroidScreenHeader.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/ui/Sheet*.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/{connection,files,home,pull-requests,review,settings,threads,workspace}/*, apps/mobile/src/Stack.tsx, vite.config.ts, apps/mobile/vite.config.ts
Android screen and sheet headers switch to AppBar with embedded or sheet options. The AndroidSheetHeader wrapper is removed, and lint rules restrict imports of the retired headers.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: Android headers now route through AppBar, which keeps the filter in a fixed position. It follows the conventional commit form and is one sentence. It is a little dense, but it matches the changeset, which converts Android headers, sheets, and filters to AppBar.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template sections (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification). It explains the inconsistent Android header layouts and the filter position drift, and describes the AppBar contract, the workspace bar, menus, search, the lint rule, and iOS impact. Verification includes device-specific frame results, screenshots, and the tests added. The Scope and approval section is missing: it gives no linked issue, maintainer discussion, or justification for a change of this size, which the template requires. The Problem section is also not separated from the Change section under its own heading. The description is mostly complete, but these gaps are notable.

Resolution

Add the links to the triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion under a "Scope and approval" heading. The template asks for this. Label the opening paragraph as "Problem" and move the Change bullets under a "Change" heading. The template also asks for the model and harness used, which the description covers in its last line.
