feat(server,web,mobile): @-mention a machine, and linked environments become a Labs beta#17130
Part of cross-environment orchestration. A user can type @ and part of a machine's name, as in "hand off work to my @box", and the composer inserts a chip for that T3 Code environment. The agent learns exactly which machine is meant, so it can delegate there straight away, or ask to link it with the card from the previous PR.
How it works
- Contracts. New context kind
environmentwithEnvironmentContextRecord {environmentId, label}, beside thethreadchip. Only identity travels, never an address. - What the agent sees (
formatComposerContextProviderPayload): the label, theenvironmentId, and one sentence: this is a T3 Code environment the user means; if it isn't linked here, callt3_environment_linkwith this id, then pass the id todelegate_task,t3_thread_launchand the other tools. - Web.
- The
@menu offers the user's other environments, with their machine icon and a "Machine" label, beside threads and files. Like threads, they appear once you type part of a name; a bare@stays the file picker. - Picking one inserts a chip with the icon and label.
- Mentioned machines live in an
environmentContextsdraft slice next to thread contexts: persisted, restored on undo, failed sends and plan follow-ups, imported on paste, and rendered in the composer and in sent messages.
- The
- Mobile. The
@popover offers the same machines (shared matchermatchComposerEnvironmentItems), inserts a chip, and lists it in the context sheet. Sent messages draw it natively. The record doesn't carry the machine kind, so every machine chip in message text uses one server glyph. iOS uses the system symbol; Android has a hand-drawn glyph that needs a native build. - Every switch over context kinds now has a decision for
environment.
Linked environments is a Labs beta, off by default
- A server setting,
linkedEnvironmentsEnabled, under Settings → Labs → Beta. Web and desktop get one switch; mobile's Labs page lists each connected machine with its own. - Off on the machine that links: new links, link requests, agent calls that name another machine, and new remote
delegate_taskare refused. Reads, waits and interrupts on a task already running there are not, so it still finishes and can still be cancelled. - Off on the machine being linked to: it refuses link registrations and answers link sessions with a 403. The linking side treats that as retryable, so a running task's follower waits instead of failing.
- Agents: while it is off they don't see
t3_environment_links,t3_environment_linkort3_environment_unlink, and a tool given another machine'senvironmentIdfails at once with a message to leave it out. The MCP eval now hides those tools too, since the beta starts off. - Clients hide Linked environments in Connections and machine chips in the composer for a machine with it off.
- Tests: both sides' link gates and a link waiting out the beta (
PeerLinks.test.ts); a running remote task finishing with the beta off while a new one is refused (RemoteDelegation.test.ts); tool hiding and the early error over a real/mcp(McpHttpServer.test.ts). Each gate fails its test when removed.
Model eval (MCP tool-use on this layer, b1dd2c824a, with the beta off as it starts; 2-3 samples per case)
| Model | Cases | Samples | Cost |

| Claude Opus 5.5 | 84 of 87 | 94% of 179 | $15.24 |
- The misses also miss on main (71ba6b374c). Rerun with 4 samples on each side:
guard-stop-preview-after-correctiongot 0 of 4 on both, on both models.preview-snapshot-timeout-retry-loopgot 0 of 4 on both on Sonnet, and on Opus 1 of 4 on main and 0 of 4 here.schedule-runs-job-firston Opus got 2 of 4 on main and 3 of 4 here.stale-review-not-cancelled-on-shipon Sonnet missed 2 of 2 in the full run and passed 4 of 4 on the rerun. - The GPT models were not run: the machine that ran it has no
vibeproxyprovider for them. - What the stack adds to every thread with the beta off: about 100 tokens of instructions and 760 tokens of tool schemas, mostly the optional
environmentId, over main's 1.2k and 14.1k. With it on, the three link tools add about 500 more.
Verification
- Shared
composerContextReferences.test.ts: the provider payload for a machine chip carries label, id and the instruction, and no address. - Web
composerDraftStore.test.ts: a machine chip round-trips through the draft store (persist, restore, send). The removal and restore paths were mutation-checked. - Client-runtime
composerThreadItems.test.ts: matching machines by name. ContractscomposerContext.test.ts: the new kind decodes and encodes. MobilenativeMarkdownText.test.ts: the native chip payload. - Per-layer check of the whole stack, rebased on main at 71ba6b374c: this layer's server, web, mobile and evals packages typecheck clean, lint is clean, and its 343 focused server tests pass. The client tests touched here pass.
Real client (web, laptop and box dev servers, Codex GPT 6.0 Astra):
Typing @bo lists box as a machine beside matching threads:
The @ menu shows three threads and "box · Machine" with the server icon
Box already linked: the agent calls t3_environment_link with the chip's environmentId, gets linked back at once with no card, delegates, and the export lands on the box:
Box not linked yet: the same chip makes the agent ask for that machine. The card skips the machine list and opens on box. After the user picks the access, the agent is woken, delegates, and MIN_ORDER lands on the box:
The card "Link a machine to this environment" with Review link…
The dialog titled "Link box" goes straight to the access levels
Not verified on mobile in a real client here; the mobile code typechecks and its tests pass.

Approvability
Verdict: Needs Human Approval
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This adds machine-mention chips and makes linked environments a default-off Labs beta. The default change requires a human decision because cross-machine operations now require explicit enablement on both machines, and remote results can wait until re-enabled.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections and is substantive. It has a clear Problem-like opening (the cross-environment
@-mentionfeature), a detailed Change section covering contracts, agent payload, web, mobile, and a Labs beta gate, and an extensive Verification section with tests, a model eval table, and screenshots. It does not include a Scope and approval section: there is no linked triaged issue or maintainer-approval discussion, and the description does not argue that the change qualifies as a small focused fix or approved configuration. The template states that broader workflow or behavior changes still need approval, and this PR adds a new context kind, a new agent-facing tool surface, and a Labs beta, so that gap is material. The Problem section is also not labeled; the opening paragraph covers the motivation only loosely.Resolution
Add a 'Scope and approval' section that links the triaged issue or the discussion with explicit maintainer approval of this direction, including the approval comment. If no prior approval exists, state that explicitly and get maintainer sign-off before merge. Add an explicit 'Problem' section stating the problem in a sentence or two, with expected behavior, instead of folding it into the opening paragraph. Keep the existing Change and Verification content. The Verification section already meets the template requirements for focused tests and UI screenshots, so it needs no change.

Two suggestions from a screen reader user, in case they fit this stack or a later PR.
Right now the only way to attach a thread from another environment is to drag it from the sidebar onto the composer, and there's no keyboard equivalent:
- The sidebar drag only registers a pointer sensor (
Sidebar.tsx). - The
@thread picker only lists threads from the composer's own environment (composerThreadItems.ts). - A thread chip pasted from another environment is silently dropped (
ChatComposer.tsx).
I run into this between the desktop app's Windows and WSL environments.
Once agents can read linked environments (#16684), these might close the gap:
- List linked environments' threads in the
@picker, alongside the machines this PR adds. Picking one would give the agent both the environment and the thread ID, and it would work from the keyboard on web and mobile. - Include the environment when copying a thread ID (Ctrl+Shift+C or "Copy thread ID"). Today it copies only the bare ID, so the ID only works on the server that owns the thread.
Taking over this one for batch composer-chat-17: verification preflight is blocked, so I have not changed or pushed this branch.
Current head: 2b63f76e22, based on the unmerged t3code/peer/agent-link layer. Main still lacks the environment context record. This is a persisted cross-client context feature, and the Android chip glyph changes native code. Rebuilding the linking/native layers would exceed this batch's target scope.
The T3 Device tool returned exactly: “Agent device access is turned off for this environment.” I ran no new test or native client pass for this PR and do not claim the author's existing proof as a new verification. The original native and unlinked-machine gaps remain.
Coordinator handoff:
- Integrate the required linking and native-chip layers, then rebuild this feature on that accepted base without dropping environment identity in draft/undo/failed-send/queued-edit/paste paths.
- Enable Device access on the test host. From that checkout run
node scripts/mobile-native-client.ts ensure ios <device-id>and the equivalentandroidcommand, then start the isolated backend and mobile Metro. - On web and both native clients, type a partial machine @-mention, send it, verify the exact environment ID reaches the provider, and exercise linked and initially unlinked destinations. Verify native chip display/removal and draft persistence through restart; capture before/after and a short linking/delegation recording.
- Run scoped contracts/shared/client-runtime/web/mobile typechecks, lint and the context/draft/matcher suites on the integrated head.
Human approval and landing now belong to the central coordinator. No watchers started; nothing merged.
Factory catalog cross-reference — 2026-10-26. Optional future-work context: machine context chips could identify destinations on web/mobile. This later layer is not included or required by the frozen factory preview.
Factory Ideas · Pinned fork source/guide · Source release. Version-pinned community experimental source preview; full lifecycle acceptance remains open. No upstream endorsement or current-PR-head test acceptance is claimed.

@akj Thanks, both are real gaps. We're starting on them now as follow-ups: listing linked environments' threads in the @ picker, and including the environment when copying a thread ID.
