Thread transfer impact
⚠️ The latest CI run did not produce a thread transfer result for f7250fa.
This comment will update automatically after the next completed run.
Reusable client operations still use Effect.gen wrappers across web, desktop, mobile, and client-runtime. They should have named operation spans while batching, recurring samples, streamed updates, and input-dependent WSL tracing retain their intended boundaries.
Replace 53 reusable generator wrappers across web, desktop, mobile, and client-runtime. Preserve input-dependent WSL span attributes, explicit result types, and command input inference; keep shell-cache batches, telemetry samples, and repeated scheduling helpers untraced.
Effect.fn covers reusable client-runtime commands, authentication and linking, filesystem work, and desktop operations across web, desktop, and mobile.Effect.fnUntraced covers shell-cache batches, repeated command scheduling, metadata seeding on file reads, broadcasts of streamed updates, and periodic telemetry samples. These run per batch, command, read, update, or sample.resolveWsl wrapper still creates its existing explicit span, preserving request-dependent port and distribution attributes. Untraced here avoids a second wrapper span; it does not remove the intended WSL tracing. This is a maintainer-requested layer of the Effect function migration. The maintainer explicitly requested the migration and this PR stack. It updates tracing boundaries in existing operations while preserving their operational behavior, rather than adding a product feature or default. The work is authored by juliusmarminge (maintainer list); there is no separate public approval discussion.
Depends on #21997.
Scoped typechecks passed for web, desktop, mobile, and client-runtime. Focused suites covered cloud linking, authentication proofs, client caches and commands, desktop backends, updates, WSL, and telemetry. The affected desktop and command suites were rerun after the final fixes.
Nonvisual refactor; evidence comes from the focused behavior and tracing tests. No UI verification applies.

The pull request converts Effect implementations across desktop, mobile, web, and client runtime to named or untraced Effect.fn forms. It also extracts pull-request actions and diff loading, and adds shared earlier-thread-history loading.
Changes: Effect Function Refactor
| Layer / File(s) | Summary |
|---|---|
Desktop Effect conversions apps/desktop/src/app/*, apps/desktop/src/backend/*, apps/desktop/src/electron/ElectronWindow.ts, apps/desktop/src/preview/Manager.ts, apps/desktop/src/snapShot/DesktopSnapShot.ts, apps/desktop/src/telemetry/DesktopTelemetryPublisher.ts, apps/desktop/src/updates/DesktopRemoteUpdates.ts, apps/desktop/src/wsl/* | Desktop operations now use Effect.fn or Effect.fnUntraced. Existing validation, polling, cleanup, telemetry, update, snapshot, preview restoration, and WSL behavior remain unchanged. |
Mobile agent registration apps/mobile/src/features/agent-awareness/remoteRegistration.ts | Registration, unregistration, token handling, and live-activity reconciliation now use Effect.fn. Existing platform checks, relay calls, and retry behavior remain unchanged. |
Mobile cloud proof and linking apps/mobile/src/features/cloud/dpop.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/cloud/linkEnvironment.ts | DPoP key and proof operations and cloud linking now use Effect.fn. Existing key handling, proof creation, relay flow, and error behavior remain unchanged. |
Web cloud operations apps/web/src/cloud/dpop.ts, apps/web/src/cloud/linkEnvironment.ts | Browser DPoP and cloud-link operations now use Effect.fn. Existing proof, relay, link, unlink, and error behavior remains unchanged. |
Web connection persistence apps/web/src/connection/storage.ts | Shell, server configuration, thread, and VCS reference persistence operations now use named Effect.fn generators. Encoding, persistence, and error mapping remain unchanged. |
Client runtime Effect conversions packages/client-runtime/src/platform/shellCacheEncoding.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/relay/managedRelayState.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/* | Encoding, relay observation, authorization, metadata, orchestration, persistence, and scheduling operations now use Effect.fn or Effect.fnUntraced. Their existing behavior remains unchanged. |
Client runtime command effects packages/client-runtime/src/state/pullRequests.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadCommands.ts | Pull-request diff loading and action execution use shared effects. Earlier-thread-history loading returns "noop" when no controller is registered and otherwise delegates to the controller. |

Verdict: Needs Human Approval
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This broad refactor mainly standardizes Effect function wrappers and tracing boundaries while preserving existing operational logic. It also touches DPoP and environment-authentication code, which requires human review under the security-sensitive change policy.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge
Fixed in b31222dc91: the span now uses PreviewManager.restoreControlSession, matching the service and its other operations. Targeted lint and the desktop typecheck pass.
@juliusmarminge Thanks for the fix. PreviewManager.restoreControlSession now matches the service’s span prefix.
