Problem

Reusable provider runtime operations still wrap Effect.gen, leaving tracing boundaries inconsistent and making it easy to reintroduce per-event spans.

Change

Convert 21 generator wrappers in provider construction, authentication, snapshot handling, subagent projection, and the Codex app-server protocol. Reusable operations receive named spans; protocol writes, token-usage ticks, and terminal-output updates stay deliberately untraced. Qualify new registry and protocol span names by service so unrelated operations can be distinguished.

Tracing choices

  • Named Effect.fn covers provider and registry construction, authentication, snapshots, subagent projection, and Codex protocol requests. Registry and protocol span names identify their owning service.
  • Effect.fnUntraced covers protocol writes (offerOutgoing), token-usage ticks (applyUsageLimits), and terminal sign-in output updates (setInteraction). These run per write, usage update, or output chunk, so an extra span on every call would add noise and overhead.

Scope and approval

This is a maintainer-requested and maintainer-authored layer of the Effect function migration. It changes instrumentation while preserving provider, protocol, and authentication behavior. The scope was approved in the maintainer's implementation request; there is no separate public issue or approval discussion.

Depends on #21990.

Verification

Scoped typechecks passed for provider-core, provider-acp-registry, and effect-codex-app-server. Seven focused suites passed: 118 tests. The later per-event fixes passed all 33 managed-provider and auth-flow tests. For the span-name-only changes, targeted lint and the registry/protocol typechecks passed.

No user-interface behavior changed, so screenshots are not applicable.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval โ€” This is primarily a tracing refactor that preserves the existing provider, cache, lifecycle, and protocol logic. Human review is still required because authentication-related files are modified, which makes the change sensitive under the review criteria.

Use the existing AcpRegistryCatalog.* span prefix for the service methods.

makeAcpRegistryCatalog creates the AcpRegistryCatalog.make span. Every internal helper in this file uses the same AcpRegistryCatalog. prefix, for example AcpRegistryCatalog.findAgent and AcpRegistryCatalog.refreshRegistry. The four public service methods use AcpRegistrySupport.search, AcpRegistrySupport.prepare, AcpRegistrySupport.inspect, and AcpRegistrySupport.resolve. As a result, one service has spans under two prefixes. A trace query for AcpRegistryCatalog.* misses the top-level operations. The convention is Effect.fn("Service.operation"), and the service tag is AcpRegistryCatalog.

Qualify the generic span names with the driver name.

These spans are named driver.create, driver.withLiveRuntimeState, and driver.enrichProviderCached. The same file already uses the AcpRegistryDriver. prefix for AcpRegistryDriver.buildInitialSnapshot, AcpRegistryDriver.checkProviderStatus, and AcpRegistryDriver.checkProviderReadiness. Every provider driver has a create method. If other drivers also use driver.create, their traces cannot be told apart. Rename these spans to AcpRegistryDriver.create, AcpRegistryDriver.withLiveRuntimeState, and AcpRegistryDriver.enrichProviderCached. Two other new names have the same problem: auth.authenticate in auth.ts Line 230 and protocol.request in protocol.ts Line 451. For example, use AcpRegistryAuth.authenticate and CodexAppServerProtocol.request.

Keep applyUsageLimits untraced. It runs on every token-usage tick.

applyUsageLimitsUpdate in usageLimits.ts (lines 50-91) documents this caller's rate: "Codex sends this notification beside every token-usage tick, almost always with unchanged numbers." The helper is designed so the common no-op path does not allocate. This change wraps that path in Effect.fn("managedProvider.applyUsageLimits"). Each tick now creates a span, even when nothing is published. The repository rule reserves named spans for reusable operations and says to use Effect.fnUntraced for per-event work. The rule also says to explain that choice nearby. The PR does this for offerOutgoing in protocol.ts.

Keep setInteraction untraced. Terminal sign-in calls it once per output chunk.

In packages/provider-acp-registry/src/server/auth.ts (lines 201-225), runTerminal calls update() โ†’ context.setInteraction(...) for every PTY chunk taken from the output queue. The Effect.forever loop runs until the login command exits. With Effect.fn("providerAuthFlow.setInteraction"), an interactive terminal login creates one span per output chunk. These spans sit under the long-lived authentication fiber. The enclosing operation already has the auth.authenticate span. The repository rule calls for Effect.fnUntraced on per-chunk work, with a nearby explanation.

Addressed the additional span-name feedback in 0b98c1e19b: registry methods use AcpRegistryCatalog.*, driver methods use AcpRegistryDriver.*, and authentication/protocol requests use their specific module names. Targeted lint and both affected package typechecks passed. The earlier per-event span findings remain fixed. The PR description now includes the requested template sections and states the maintainer-directed scope.
