Problem

Reusable orchestration storage operations still use Effect.gen wrappers, obscuring operation boundaries. Storage and query operations should have named spans while event projection, ingestion, and empty-outbox polling avoid per-event or per-poll spans.

Change

Replace 55 generator wrappers in orchestration storage, projections, ingestion, shell snapshots, and stream coordination. Keep event-level projection and ingestion helpers and empty-outbox polling untraced; preserve recursive signatures and optional parameters.

Tracing choices

  • Named Effect.fn covers reusable storage, repository, transaction, query, and stream-setup operations. ProjectionStore.decodeShellSnapshot has its own span to expose the cost of decoding a whole snapshot.
  • Effect.fnUntraced covers event projection, ingestion, normalization, publication, item-position allocation, and per-row shell decoding. These sit on repeated event or row paths. claimNext also stays untraced because the worker repeatedly polls an empty outbox.

Scope and approval

This is a maintainer-requested layer of the Effect function migration. The maintainer explicitly requested the migration and this PR stack. It updates tracing boundaries in existing operations while preserving their operational behavior, rather than adding a product feature or default. The work is authored by juliusmarminge (maintainer list); there is no separate public approval discussion.

Depends on #21993.

Verification

The server typecheck passed. Six focused suites passed: 123 tests covering projections, ingestion, stream budgets, coalescing, shell snapshots, and item positions.

The snapshot-decoding tracing fix also passed all 45 ProjectionStore tests, targeted lint, and the server typecheck.

Nonvisual refactor; evidence comes from the focused behavior and tracing tests. No UI verification applies.

Give decodeShellSnapshot a correct rationale or a named span.

decodeShellSnapshot decodes the complete shell snapshot. It does not process one orchestration event. The comment "This helper runs for individual orchestration events" is therefore incorrect here.

The interface note at Lines 400-403 says that this decode converts thousands of rows. It is the expensive step of the snapshot read. getShellSnapshot and readShellSnapshot run it after the transaction commits. If the helper stays untraced, the trace cannot show the decode cost separately from the SQL read in readShellSnapshotRows.

The same copied comment is also on shellThreadStateFromRow (Lines 5817-5819). That helper runs per shell row, not per event. Untraced is correct there, but its rationale text should say per row.

For shellThreadStateFromRow, change the comment to say that the helper runs once for each shell row and that decodeShellSnapshot owns the span.

As per path instructions: "Use Effect.fnUntraced deliberately for per-event/per-chunk work, tight loops, or helpers already covered by an enclosing operation span, and explain that rationale beside the function or group."

Addressed the shell-snapshot tracing nitpick in e7b7506: decodeShellSnapshot now uses Effect.fn("ProjectionStore.decodeShellSnapshot"), so the complete decode has a separate operation span. shellThreadStateFromRow stays untraced, with its comment corrected to explain the per-row call pattern and enclosing read span. All 45 ProjectionStore tests, targeted lint, and the server typecheck passed. The stack is rebased and pushed, and the descriptions' whitespace-ignored diffs are refreshed.
