Problem

Closed empty terminals, PR panels, and hosted browser views eagerly load their renderers. They now use ordinary lazy imports with local failure states; existing terminal sessions remain mounted while hidden. Mermaid and raw-HTML parsing load when needed, and sanitization/search behavior remains intact.

Change

Optional panel renderers and Markdown parsers load when used. Existing hidden terminal sessions remain mounted, and pending or failed parser loading preserves escaped readable content.

Scope and approval

Maintainer takeover of @maria-rcks’s investigation and proof of concept in #17609, claimed in the takeover comment. Each stack layer owns one concern. Custom chunk/precompression/reload machinery and unrelated runtime changes were omitted. This records the authorized takeover; Macroscope’s required human review remains outstanding for startup, compact events, web, and desktop.

Verification

225 focused markdown/search/timeline tests, scoped web/shared typechecks and lint passed. After the latest test-only compatibility fix, the actual scoped web typecheck and all 68 Markdown browser cases also pass on both owner and integrated top. Native T3 browser proof at integrated head 5ebaed6, whose production blobs are byte-identical to current integrated 945a89a, using isolated stopped fixture state at 1280×800, confirmed code highlighting, HTML Details, Mermaid, terminal open/hide/reopen with retained output, linked-PR-list activation, and a populated PR-detail view. The browser pass observed steady rendered content; the pending-parser interval is proven separately by the gated existing browser case, which failed before the one-line fallback fix and passed afterward. Browser chunk failure was not injected.

Earlier resource instrumentation on 19eec8b showed four closed panel modules absent and terminal/list modules present after activation. The only subsequent production change is the HTML fallback line, so the import graph is unchanged; the current pass confirmed terminal/list activation but did not repeat the complete initial resource capture. These are module-presence observations, not whole-app latency or bundle-size measurements. Packaged Electron/hosted-browser, macOS, Windows/WSL, iOS, Android, relay/tunnel and old-client binaries remain unverified.

Six independent whole-stack review rounds are complete. Final round-6 Opus and Sol reviews found no confirmed code defects in the complete pinned-base-to-945a89a diff. Confirmed earlier findings are fixed: bounded early admission, provider subscription ordering, legacy event replay and service ownership, sibling PR refreshes, literal HTML loading/failure fallback, desktop unreadiness errors, migration expectations, memory fixtures, and browser test readiness/library compatibility. The final existing Markdown file passes 68/68 on owner and top; scoped web typecheck, lint and formatting pass. No new case was added for those browser readiness or compatibility repairs.

Current web CI passed, including Test Web, Build and Typecheck, and Check. Current desktop CI passed, with Test Web skipped by its scope gate. A duplicate desktop workflow was cancelled; its aggregate Check failed on cancelled input jobs and remains visible in the rollup alongside the successful same-head run. The earlier attachment-preview failure predates this stack’s web changes, passed isolated current/base comparisons, and did not recur in current web CI; its exact timing cause remains unproven and no unrelated patch was added.

Required human approvals remain outstanding for startup, compact events, web and desktop. CodeRabbit’s latest desktop incremental review was skipped because it could not recover its checkpoint; the independent full-diff round-6 reviews cover the current head. No bot approval is inferred from a skipped review. Native/platform proof limits remain as stated above. This stack is unmerged and is not declared merge-ready.

Models: GPT-6-Astra (tests), GPT-6.1-Sol (implementation), GPT-6-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 (review); Codex and Claude harnesses in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR broadly changes when several production UI renderers and Markdown parsers execute, introducing asynchronous loading and new intermediate/error states across previews, terminals, pull requests, Mermaid, and raw HTML. The behavior is well covered by focused tests but spans multiple existing request paths, so human review is appropriate.

📝 Walkthrough

Selected browser, terminal, pull-request, and Markdown components now load lazily. The shared Markdown pipeline separates its plugin factory from the raw-HTML plugin list, and thread-find block tags are exported from a separate module.

Changes: Deferred UI surfaces

Layer / File(s)Summary
Browser and terminal loading
apps/web/src/browser/ElectronBrowserHost.tsx, apps/web/src/components/PersistentThreadTerminals.tsx, apps/web/src/browser/ElectronBrowserHost.browser.test.tsx
The Electron browser and terminal drawer load lazily within Suspense boundaries. Error boundaries show alerts on failure. The terminal wrapper returns nothing when hidden and without terminal IDs. The browser test waits for both webviews before checking their order.
Pull-request panel loading
apps/web/src/components/chat/RightPanelSurfaceContent.tsx
The detail and thread panels load lazily. The detail panel uses a ghost loading fallback; both panels use error-boundary fallbacks.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve raw-HTML text while its parser loads.

If a message contains a standalone HTML block, this fallback omits rehypeRaw but still runs rehypeSanitize. The sanitizer drops the unparsed raw node, so the block can disappear until the import settles. Use the existing CHAT_MARKDOWN_LITERAL_HTML_REHYPE_PLUGINS list for the loading fallback, as the import-failure path does, to keep the HTML escaped and readable. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

✅ Addressed in commits 69fe44d to 0c0593f

Fixed in 0c0593f. The loading fallback now uses the existing literal-HTML pipeline, matching the import-failure path. The strengthened existing browser case holds the real parser import pending, proves standalone HTML stays visible as escaped text with no live unsafe elements, then releases it and verifies sanitized rendered content. It fails against the previous fallback and passes after this one-line change; all 136 affected browser cases pass on the owner and integrated top. No new case, fixed sleep, or weaker assertion was added.

@juliusmarminge The supplied code confirms that the loading fallback now uses CHAT_MARKDOWN_LITERAL_HTML_REHYPE_PLUGINS, matching the import-failure path. This addresses the finding. The reported regression check covers both escaped content while loading and sanitized content after loading.
