Problem

Visits and background PR refreshes rewrite and transport full thread metadata. Field events now update only the visit watermark or matching PR snapshot while preserving sibling links, ownership, and watches.

Change

Compact visit and PR-refresh events update only their fields. Client capability negotiation preserves full-event compatibility and uses a fresh snapshot when legacy persisted replay encounters compact events.

Scope and approval

Maintainer takeover of @maria-rcks’s investigation and proof of concept in #17609, claimed in the takeover comment. Each stack layer owns one concern. Custom chunk/precompression/reload machinery and unrelated runtime changes were omitted. This records the authorized takeover; Macroscope’s required human review remains outstanding for startup, compact events, web, and desktop.

Verification

Background PR refreshes and branch-PR detection no longer bump the SQL thread’s updatedAt, matching the in-memory/client reducers. This can affect fallback thread ordering and sweep order; it does not change settlement eligibility.

Web and mobile opt in through shared client runtime. Legacy live subscribers receive legacy events; reconnect across stored field events returns a current snapshot. This costs extra reconnect bandwidth for older app builds whenever a compact event, including a visit, falls within their replay window. Contracts, persisted/in-memory/shared projections, compaction, awareness, and reactors follow the same behavior.

Validation: 194 focused cross-surface tests and contracts/shared/client/server/mobile typechecks passed. Two additional persisted reconnect cases pass: omitted/false capability receives a current snapshot, while opted-in clients replay the exact stored compact events and later metadata through the wire codec. PR refreshes preserve main’s no-op behavior for sibling syncs. Actual native mobile and remote tunnel clients were not exercised.

ThreadManagementService now owns capability-aware subscription, compact-event translation and persisted replay/snapshot selection; the WS transport calls one operation and maps errors. The latest refactor passed 200 focused server/integration cases and scoped server typecheck/lint/format.

Six independent whole-stack review rounds are complete. Final round-6 Opus and Sol reviews found no confirmed code defects in the complete pinned-base-to-945a89a diff. Confirmed earlier findings are fixed: bounded early admission, provider subscription ordering, legacy event replay and service ownership, sibling PR refreshes, literal HTML loading/failure fallback, desktop unreadiness errors, migration expectations, memory fixtures, and browser test readiness/library compatibility. The final existing Markdown file passes 68/68 on owner and top; scoped web typecheck, lint and formatting pass. No new case was added for those browser readiness or compatibility repairs.

Current web CI passed, including Test Web, Build and Typecheck, and Check. Current desktop CI passed, with Test Web skipped by its scope gate. A duplicate desktop workflow was cancelled; its aggregate Check failed on cancelled input jobs and remains visible in the rollup alongside the successful same-head run. The earlier attachment-preview failure predates this stack’s web changes, passed isolated current/base comparisons, and did not recur in current web CI; its exact timing cause remains unproven and no unrelated patch was added.

Required human approvals remain outstanding for startup, compact events, web and desktop. CodeRabbit’s latest desktop incremental review was skipped because it could not recover its checkpoint; the independent full-diff round-6 reviews cover the current head. No bot approval is inferred from a skipped review. Native/platform proof limits remain as stated above. This stack is unmerged and is not declared merge-ready.

Models: GPT-6-Astra (tests), GPT-6.1-Sol (implementation), GPT-6-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 (review); Codex and Claude harnesses in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This change substantially modifies production thread subscription, event persistence, projection rebuilding, and client/server wire behavior, including a new default compact-event protocol path. The cross-layer runtime change is broader than a small bounded optimization and should receive human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds compact events for thread visits and pull-request-link syncs. Server and client projections apply these events without changing thread activity timestamps. Thread subscriptions support compact-event clients and retain compatibility for clients that do not opt in.

Changes: Thread-field events

ThreadManagementService now constructs snapshot, replay, and live streams. Subscribers that accept thread-field events receive compact events; legacy subscribers receive refreshed snapshots or expanded live events. The WebSocket handler delegates stream construction to the service.
Client projection updates

Move subscription compatibility into ThreadManagementService.

subscribeOrchestrationV2Thread performs domain compatibility work in ws.ts. Its live path reads thread records and rewrites compact events for legacy clients. Its replay path inspects stored events and selects a snapshot fallback. The mandatory thin-transport rule applies to this stream handler; no subscription-specific exception is defined.

Add a capability-aware service operation, such as streamThreadEventsForClient({ threadId, afterSequence, acceptThreadFieldEvents }), that owns the live translation and replay/snapshot decision. Keep ws.ts limited to decoding input, calling the service operation, and mapping errors. This also makes the compatibility behavior reusable and testable without a socket.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Moved capability-aware subscription, legacy event translation, and replay/snapshot selection into ThreadManagementService in d91751f. The WS handler now calls one service operation and maps errors. Existing bounded/replay, compatibility, transfer-budget and service coverage passes (200 focused server/integration cases); scoped server typecheck, lint and format pass.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. The updated subscribeOrchestrationV2Thread calls streamThreadEventsForClient and maps setup and stream errors. This addresses the thin-transport concern.

Update the RpcInitialMemory fixture's thread-management dependency.

subscribeOrchestrationV2Thread now calls streamThreadEventsForClient(input). The fixture still provides a direct Layer.mock(Threads.ThreadManagementService) without that method. The snapshot and replay modes can therefore fail with UnimplementedError before their assertions.

Build Threads.layer instead. Provide it with an Orchestrator.OrchestratorV2 mock containing the snapshot, snapshot-window, and stored-event methods. Provide empty mocks for ProviderSessionManagerV2, CommandReceiptStoreV2, and ServerSettingsService. Keep the existing OrchestrationEventStore mock. This keeps the test on the real streamThreadEventsForClient path.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Fixed in c5f9b2d. The memory fixture now constructs the real ThreadManagementService layer over external dependency mocks, retaining all existing payload, completion-marker and GC assertions. The unchanged prefix, snapshot and replay cases pass on both the compact-event owner and the propagated stack: zero retained payloads at two and four open subscriptions. Scoped lint/format and Node syntax checks pass.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the fix. Using the real ThreadManagementService layer addresses this finding. Your reported test results also confirm that the existing GC assertions still pass for prefix, snapshot, and replay cases.
