feat: clients show when the host is short on memory and which agents use the most#27253
Problem
When the agents slice is throttled for memory, every agent freezes and nothing in T3 says why. Turns just keep saying Working.
Fix
- Server (
HostResources) reads memory pressure:- Linux: PSI
/proc/pressure/memoryfor the host, plus the agents slice'smemory.pressure, located through the newAgentScope.controlGroups. - macOS:
kern.memorystatus_vm_pressure_level, read by the already-running native resource monitor throughsysctlbyname. Sampling never spawns a process: under memory pressure a new process may fail to start, which is exactly when the reading matters. The sidecar answers a newmemoryPressurecommand; releases build and bundle it from the same commit as the server.
- Linux: PSI
- Derived level
none / elevated / severe, with hysteresis: a level is entered above its threshold and left only well below it, so it does not flicker.- Elevated: host
full≥ 2 %, hostsome≥ 10 %, or agentsfull≥ 5 %. - Severe: host
full≥ 10 %, agentsfull≥ 20 %, or macOS critical. - The agents slice gets looser thresholds because the kernel throttles it first.
- Elevated: host
- Heaviest agents. While pressure is not
none, the top three agent scopes bymemory.currentare included with their thread (shared processes appear as e.g.codex (shared)). Sizes are rounded to about 1/8 of their magnitude so normal growth doesn't push an update every sample. - Transport.
HostResourcesSnapshotgains an optionalmemoryPressure.- Clients that opt in with
memoryPressure: true(capabilitymemoryPressure) getmemoryPressureUpdatedon the config stream, mirroring howusageLimitSourceswas added so older clients never see an unknown event type. - Sampling is a
Stream.shared 5 s poll that runs only while someone listens, and emits only on change. - The payload carries only the level and the heaviest agents; raw stall percentages changed every sample and no client read them. A
noneupdate that changes nothing leaves the client's config untouched, so nothing re-renders. - When no source can be read for 30 s (for example a dead sidecar), the level falls back to
none, so a warning cannot outlive the pressure. - Pressure is never cached and is carried across reconnect snapshots.
- No protocol version bump is needed: the field is optional and the event is opt-in.
- Web. A warning pill in the sidebar footer, "Low on memory", appears only while severe. Its popover names the heaviest agents with links to their threads and Force stop from the previous layer.
- Mobile. The same as a banner at the top of the thread list, with a confirmation before Force stop.
Verification
- Tests:
- PSI parsing and a hysteresis table, including the incident's throttled-agents reading and macOS critical.
- Agent memory rounding (regression: a 28 MB agent used to round to 0 and vanish from the list).
AgentScope.controlGroupsmaps scopes to threads in the fake-systemd harness.- The config projection carries pressure across a reconnect snapshot, drops it once pressure ends, and ignores a
noneupdate when nothing is stored. - On macOS a sidecar that stops answering clears a severe level after 30 s.
- On macOS,
HostResourcestakes the level from the sidecar; the test's spawner fails if sampling spawns anything (it did before). - The sidecar's Rust tests ran on macOS (macmini), where
memoryPressurereturned level 1 from the real syscall, and on Linux, where it returnsnull.
vp run check:changedpasses for the stack.- Runtime on Linux: Force stop from the list killed exactly the chosen agent and left the other two running.
Evidence (web)
No load was generated on nucbox-1. For the capture only, an uncommitted two-line patch pointed the PSI reads at a fixture file holding severe readings (host full avg10=6.4, agents full avg10=84.7). The agents, their scopes and memory.current, the stream, and the UI are all real.
| Before (main): nothing tells the user agents are starved | After: sidebar warning naming the heaviest agents, with Force stop |
|---|---|
| Before: main shows a frozen agent as plain Working, with no memory warning | After: Low on memory popover listing three agents with their thread titles, sizes and Force stop |
Limits
- The mobile banner is not captured; Metro on nucbox-1 was ruled out while it hosts the live server.
- Heaviest agents need systemd scopes, so on macOS and Windows only the level shows.
- Real pressure behavior is verified on the separate VM.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the required template: it has Problem, Fix (Change), Verification, and Limits sections, and it states the problem, the approach, and the test results. Scope and approval is missing. The description does not link a triaged issue or a maintainer-approved discussion, and it does not explain why the change qualifies for an exemption. The PR adds a new capability, so the template requires that approval. Verification is detailed and includes test names, a macOS sidecar run, a Linux runtime check, and before/after screenshots. The mobile banner was not captured, and the author states this. The description also omits a conventional commit title, which the template requests in its header comment.
Resolution
Add a "Scope and approval" section. Link the triaged bug issue or the discussion with explicit maintainer approval of this direction, including the approval comment. The PR adds a new feature (memory-pressure reporting and warnings for web and mobile), so a simple exemption does not apply. Consider adding a conventional commit title in plain language, such as "feat(server): show when the host is short on memory". If you want the mobile banner covered by evidence, add a screenshot or state the gap clearly again in Verification.

Do not carry pressure across a server-version change.
The config projection survives session replacement, and subscribe delivers the replacement server's snapshot to it. The snapshot branch currently carries the previous memoryPressure unconditionally. If the replacement is an older server with no pressure events, the severe warning can remain visible for the lifetime of that projection.
Retain pressure only when the snapshot has the same server version.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge
Valid, fixed in 7586be0d5b. Rather than comparing server versions, the snapshot branch carries memoryPressure only when the replacement server advertises capabilities.memoryPressure: a server that sends the event replays the current level on subscribe, and one that doesn't would never clear it. The existing projection test now also reconnects to a snapshot without the capability and expects the pressure to be dropped; it failed before the change. #27254 applies the same gate to quietRuns.
@juliusmarminge The capability check is more precise than comparing server versions. The supplied code carries memoryPressure only when capabilities.memoryPressure === true, so a replacement server without the capability drops the previous pressure. This addresses the stale-warning finding.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff Minor at packages/client-runtime/src/state/server.ts:433-438 (exclude memoryPressure from the persisted config cache): valid, fixed in 165f23076b. persist now strips memoryPressure with the other live-only fields, so pressure changes no longer write to the cache. The existing "shows a reported stall but never caches it" test now puts pressure in the live snapshot and asserts the saved config omits it; it failed before the change. #27254 (6611a2c1e8) strips quietRuns the same way, with the same assertion.
The inline serverConfigProjection.ts finding from that review was fixed earlier in 7586be0d5b (the thread is resolved).

@juliusmarminge Confirmed by source inspection: persist removes memoryPressure before cache comparison and saving. Pressure-only changes therefore do not cause cache writes.
The updated test includes pressure in the live snapshot and asserts that the saved config omits it. This addresses the outside-diff finding. I did not run the test.
Acknowledged that the earlier serverConfigProjection.ts thread is already resolved.

Intentionally not gated. Releases build the resource monitor from the same commit as the server and bundle it into both the desktop app and the CLI archive (release-desktop.yml, scripts/build-cli-archive.ts), so a shipped server never talks to an older protocol-3 sidecar. The only mismatch is a developer's stale local build under native/resource-monitor/target/ on macOS, and rebuilding it fixes that. We had a hello capability check here and removed it as unneeded.

Provide AgentScope in the macOS test layer.
HostResources.layer requires AgentScope while constructing HostResources. The test does not provide it, so the normal server test command fails before checking the macOS pressure level.

@juliusmarminge You’re right. I confirmed that AgentScope is a Context.Reference with a no-op defaultValue in packages/shared/src/AgentScope.ts, Line 63. The test uses that default when no layer provides it.
My claim that the test fails from a missing AgentScope was incorrect. No change is needed. I withdraw the finding.

Keep the previous level when the macOS reading fails.
The sidecar processes commands on a single thread, so a slow collector.sample can delay the memoryPressure reply. If the reply takes longer than 1 s, memoryPressureLevel fails with NativeTelemetryRequestTimedOut. Line 126 turns that failure into null. When every sample field is null, nextMemoryPressureLevel returns "none". A host that was severe then drops to none for one cycle, and the warning and Force stop option disappear. This is the situation the feature exists for. The same applies to any Linux read failure.
Return previous when no signal was read. A host without PSI stays at none.

Valid, fixed in 8f206f69da. nextMemoryPressureLevel now returns the previous level when no signal could be read (a sidecar timeout or an unreadable PSI file), so a severe host no longer drops to none for a cycle. A host that never has these signals still stays at none. Your suggested row is in the existing table (previous severe, all-null sample, expect severe); it failed before the fix.
@juliusmarminge The supplied code confirms that nextMemoryPressureLevel returns previous when all signals are null. This preserves severe after a failed read and keeps an unsupported host at none. Thanks for adding the regression case.

Rank agents before rounding their memory.
When four agents have different memory usage within one rounding step, roundAgentMemory gives them the same value. The sort can then retain the first three scope entries and omit the agent using the most memory. Sort and select by the raw memory.current value, then round the selected values for display.

Valid, fixed in 2842f1749c. Ranking moved into an exported heaviestAgents that sorts and selects by exact memory.current and rounds only the three it keeps. A new test has four agents that all round to 3,328 MiB, with the largest last in scope order; it expects the three largest. It failed with rounding before ranking.
@juliusmarminge Confirmed in the supplied source: heaviestAgents sorts and selects by raw memoryBytes, then rounds only the selected agents. This addresses the finding. The reported regression test covers the rounding-tie case; I have not run it.
