Pending questions read like a form: a heavy title row, divider lines, keycaps everywhere, and "Write my own answer" sat in the list as if it were a pickable option. When an agent like Pi asks several one-question requests at once, the counter only counted inside each request, so it showed 1/1 three times.

This turns the panel into a question-first menu. The header is a quiet eyebrow on a subtle 3% band, the dividers are gone, and the selected row gets a highlight with the check on the right. On wide web, descriptions sit in a second column and stack under the label when the panel is narrow. The m/n count now spans question requests that are pending at the same time. Options flagged customAnswer show as a bottom hint with a down arrow, pointing at the composer, and can't be selected. Mobile gets the same treatment.

Before / After

Web, dark theme, ~900px panel unless noted.

e. CollapsedExternal imageExternal image
f. Narrow (414px)External imageExternal image
g. Overflow (10 options)External imageExternal image

In (d), "before" is three questions in one request. "After" is three simultaneous one-question requests, which used to show 1/1.

Important files

  • apps/web/src/components/chat/ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.tsx
    • New question-first layout: eyebrow header band, highlighted selection with a right-side check, a description column that stacks when narrow, and custom-answer options as a non-selectable hint.
  • packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadRequests.ts
    • Pending user-input requests whose pending intervals overlap form one queue. Each request gets queueQuestionIndex/queueQuestionTotal. Also exports isGenericUserInputQuestionHeader so generic "Question N" headers are hidden.
  • apps/web/src/pendingUserInput.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/threadActivity.ts
    • Custom-answer options can't be toggled or resolved as a selected answer. The answer comes from the composer.
  • apps/mobile/src/features/threads/PendingUserInputCard.tsx
    • The same treatment on mobile: header band, quiet selection, custom-answer hint, and the cross-request count.
  • packages/contracts/src/providerRuntime.ts, packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/thread/tools.ts
    • New optional customAnswer flag on question options, mirrored in the MCP thread tool schema.

Testing

  • pendingUserInput.test.ts (17), both ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.*.browser.test.tsx (21), threadRequests.test.ts (14), mobile threadActivity.test.ts (36) and reactCompilerCoverage.test.ts (909): all pass.
  • Typecheck is clean for web, mobile, and client-runtime. Lint has no errors; the only warnings, in PendingUserInputCard.tsx, are already on main. Formatting is clean.

The customAnswer contract flag also lands here. The Pi-side tools that set it follow in a separate PR.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval β€” This PR substantially rewrites the pending-question experience across web and mobile, adds cross-request queue tracking, and extends the question-option contract with customAnswer handling. The changes are well covered by tests but span multiple runtime layers and materially alter existing behavior, warranting human review.

Question options now distinguish selectable choices from custom-answer options. Pending user-input requests expose queue positions and totals. Web and mobile panels display queue context and updated question and option layouts.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(web): pending questions read as a question-first menu" follows conventional commit format and names the main change: the pending-question panel layout is reworked into a question-first menu. The changeset also covers mobile, the custom-answer handling, and the cross-request queue count, which the title does not mention. That gap is expected for a short title, so the title is judged a pass. Its scope prefix (web) is narrower than the full change, which spans web, mobile, client-runtime, and contracts.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem and Change sections are clear and specific. The Verification section lists focused tests with counts, typecheck and lint results, and before/after screenshots, which meets the template's UI requirement. The Scope and approval section is missing. It has no linked triaged issue or maintainer discussion, and no explanation of why the change qualifies without one. The description also has no separate Problem heading, and the template asks for reproduction steps or environment, which the description does not give. The screenshot links point to an external file host, not GitHub-hosted assets as the template asks.

Resolution

Add a Scope and approval section. Link the triaged bug issue or the maintainer discussion with its approval comment. If no issue exists, explain why this fix qualifies as a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug. Add the Problem heading with reproduction steps or environment. Upload the screenshots to GitHub and embed them, not link them from an external host. Restate the Verification section so the checks are clearly tied to the changed behavior.

Add a one-line comment that explains router: false.

The repository rule allows router: false only with a one-line comment that states the reason. Line 76 passes router: false without one.

Adjust the comment if the real reason differs, for example a custom container that the router wrapper would replace.

As per coding guidelines: "router is on by default. Pass router: false only with a one-line comment saying why."

‼️ IMPORTANT Carefully review the code before committing. Ensure that it accurately replaces the highlighted code, contains no missing lines, and has no issues with indentation. Thoroughly test & benchmark the code to ensure it meets the requirements.

Acquire fakeTimers() after the render.

Both new tests call using _timers = fakeTimers() before await using screen = await render(...). The tests advance these timers with vi.advanceTimersByTime. The repository rule requires such fakes to be acquired after mounting. They then dispose before the unmount.

Move each using _timers = fakeTimers(); line to just after the render call. Questions does not read timers during its first render, so this is safe.

ClaudeAdapterV2.ts:3687-3695 drops optionRecord.customAnswer while constructing each option. Web and mobile treat options as non-selectable only when this flag is true, so the custom-answer hint can become selectable.

7Update the option mapper in ClaudeAdapterV2 so it does not drop

10marked as non-selectable when true.

βœ… Addressed in commit dbe7297

Fixed in dbe72977e6. The mapper now preserves customAnswer next to preview, but only when it is exactly true (consumers check === true, and this avoids persisting customAnswer: false on every option). The existing claudeUserInputQuestions test covers it. I also checked the other adapters: OpenCode/Muse/Grok build options from their own typed protocols, which have no customAnswer field upstream to preserve, so this was the only mapper that could drop it.

@bmdavis419 Thanks for the fix. Preserving only customAnswer: true is sufficient because consumers use === true; omitting false keeps the same behavior. The mapper change and test coverage address this finding.

packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadRequests.ts:132-154 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟑 Minor | ⚑ Quick win

Sort projected pending user inputs by creation time.

When a newer pending request is already in the client array and an older request is appended, the projection preserves array order while queue positions use creation-time order. Mobile selects activePendingUserInputs[0], so it can activate the newer request while showing it as 2/2; the older request is shown later as 1/2.

Sort userInputs by createdAt before returning it. Queue metadata is already computed separately and stored by request ID, so this does not change the metadata contract.

  • fix(client-runtime): order pending questions by creation timea39c1c2
Synced from GitHub

Addressed the outside-diff finding (sort projected pending user inputs by creation time) in a39c1c2eae: derivePendingThreadRequests now sorts userInputs by createdAt before returning, so the entry consumers activate first is always the oldest pending question and matches its queue position. Added a regression test that feeds requests out of creation order (fails without the sort, passes with it).

Preserve the option value in the Claude projection.

The reachable Claude AskUserQuestion path drops each option's contract-supported value. Web and mobile then resolve the label instead of the provider value. MCP clients also receive no option value.

Copy value at this adapter boundary. This is the complete correction for this identity loss.
