Problem

ACP activation always loads first, even for providers that prefer resume; simply preferring resume would leave explicit snapshots empty.

Change

Honor the provider preference when supported and track history hydration separately from the active session. Explicit snapshots load history once while normal activation avoids replay.

Rebuilt from @t3dotgg’s #15040, keeping this layer to one concern. Six original claims are already fixed on the pinned main, including configured-home session forking. Those implementations are preserved.

Stack: #21969 → #21970 → #21971 → #21972 → #21974 → #21975 → #21976

Scope and approval

Maintainer takeover authorized for batch scheduler-tasks-05. Layer 3 of seven; coordinator owns landing and approval decisions. This is a focused correction to existing behavior.

Verification

Eleven focused ACP cases passed, covering initial/active resumed history, fresh rollback without load support, default load, configuration, fallback, interruption, and missing native sessions. Same-session active snapshots preserve in-memory state; idle reads still hydrate. No current app caller invokes the adapter snapshot method.

Fresh post-fix verification: workflow/transcript 8, selected ACP 11, complete launch suite 87: 106 distinct passes, independently reproduced by Opus. Four previously failing regressions now pass. Earlier unaffected checks are reused; the historical 422 count is not a fresh run. Full server TS7 found zero errors and one fixture warning (exit 2); the warning was corrected and its scoped fixture/import check passed with zero warnings. Targeted lint and diff checks pass.

R5 Opus and Sol cleared all seven layers and the cumulative diff. Four completed parallel rounds: R1, R3, R4, R5; R2 was cancelled before verdict. Current head-specific before/after evidence and limits.

This layer: 6192355, based on 0c3d2ed. CI will receive one delayed check; unfinished checks are handed to the coordinator.

Headless Linux, Node 24. Native Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, packaged Electron, real account-based provider execution, and relay/tunnel connections were not verified. No UI behavior changed.

Implementation: Codex gpt-6.1-sol; tests: Codex gpt-6-astra; review: Claude claude-opus-5-5 and Codex gpt-6-sol, through T3 Code.

After a successful rollback, readThreadSnapshot treats the replacement session as unhydrated and fails with ACP driver does not support session/load snapshots when the driver lacks loadSession. The rollback commit callback sets activeSessionId but not hydratedSessionId, so mark the replacement session hydrated when committing it.

Fixed in 6192355. The committed fresh rollback replacement marks its known-empty snapshot hydrated alongside its active identity. The existing rollback test now uses distinct session IDs and no load support, verifies actual empty history, and starts the next turn. Eleven focused ACP cases pass.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 6192355

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a contained ACP session-history fix: preferred resume paths now hydrate explicit snapshots once while preserving active-turn state and avoiding repeated replay. Production changes are limited to the existing adapter and are covered by focused lifecycle and concurrency tests.

📝 Walkthrough

The ACP adapter tracks hydrated session history. It selects load or resume during activation, avoids redundant snapshot loads, and updates hydration state during restarts and rollback. Tests cover load, resume, and rollback replacement paths.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 88b5f

Preferred session resume and one-time history loading work as intended, and snapshots taken during a running turn no longer replay history into it. One narrow gap remains. If resuming a session fails and the adapter falls back to a new session, a later history snapshot may reload the empty new session unnecessarily or fail on providers that cannot load sessions. This is reasonable to merge with a follow-up fix.

Guard the hydration load while a turn is active.

After resume, hydratedSessionId is unset. readThreadSnapshot can call runtime.loadSession while the requested session is streaming. The runtime drops live prompt notifications during this load, so assistant chunks and tool updates can be permanently missing.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Fixed in 6192355. Same-session snapshots during an active turn preserve available in-memory state and skip clear/load; hydration remains unset for a later idle read. Actual session switching retains its activation predicate. The strengthened existing history case failed before and now verifies live state, assistant/tool completion, and later idle hydration. No current app caller invokes this adapter method, so this is a dormant adapter API regression.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the clarification. The supplied code skips clear/load for same-session snapshots during an active turn. It leaves hydration unset for a later idle read and preserves the session-switch predicate. This addresses the finding.

The one-time CI read at 23:25 UTC found a failure in the unchanged ComposerBannerStack browser test (goal banner visibility, line 97). Failed web job. Both the test and component blobs are identical to pinned main 54983e3; this layer changes server ACP resume behavior. The other jobs in this full CI run passed. Earlier canceled workflows also leave failed aggregate Check entries; their underlying jobs were canceled. No implementation change or CI rerun requested for this unrelated browser assertion. 🟡 Minor · Mark fallback sessions as hydrated. · adapter.ts:5800-5806

packages/provider-acp/src/server/adapter.ts:5800-5806 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Mark fallback sessions as hydrated.

When initial session/load or session/resume fails, the fallback starts a new runtime without a resume session. If resume is preferred and supported, this condition still leaves hydratedSessionId unset because it checks the original input.initialNativeThreadId. A later snapshot read then attempts session/load for the fresh session, or fails immediately for a resume-only driver. Track whether the initial startup actually resumed the requested session, or mark started.sessionId as hydrated in the fallback path.
