Settings โ†’ General, before and after

With the setting on, Enter starts the thread in the background and Ctrl+Enter opens it

With the setting on, Enter starts the new thread in the background and keeps a fresh composer open. Ctrl+Enter opens the next thread.

Problem

In a new thread, a plain send opens the thread. The Composer: Start in Background binding (Mod+Enter) starts it in the background and keeps a fresh new-thread composer open. A user who starts many threads in a row has no way to make background the default.

Change

  • A new client setting, Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Start new threads in background. It is off by default.
  • When the setting is on, a send from a new thread starts it in the background. This covers Enter, the send button, and citation submit-and-send. The Start in Background binding does the opposite and opens the thread.
  • composerDefaultSendIntent in apps/web/src/composer-logic.ts owns the rule. The slash and mention menu check now compares against that default, so Enter still picks a menu item.
  • When the send shortcut requires Mod+Enter, that chord is also the Start in Background binding. It keeps starting the thread in the background, and Mod+Alt+Enter opens it. The settings hint and docs/user/keybindings.md name the right chord for each send shortcut.

Scope and approval

There is no prior issue or discussion. I submit this under the configuration route in CONTRIBUTING.md. Start in Background already exists. The option only swaps which key triggers it in a new thread. It is off by default, and existing threads behave the same with it on. The mobile app has no start-in-background send, so it does not change.

The Keybindings page still names the command "Composer: Start in Background", even when the setting makes it open the thread. I left that label alone.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/web/src/composer-logic.test.ts passes 75 tests. The new rows cover each send shortcut with the setting on and off. The setting-on rows fail on the base logic.
  • tsc --noEmit reports 0 errors for apps/web and packages/contracts. vp lint is clean on the changed files.
  • I ran the web dev server with the setting on and Claude Haiku 5.5 in a scratch repo. Typing / and pressing Enter ran /model and sent nothing. Enter showed "Started in background" and a fresh draft. Ctrl+Enter opened the new thread. The send button showed "Started in background".
  • I did not check the desktop build, macOS, or the mod-enter send shortcut in a real client. Unit tests cover the mod-enter cases.

Review loop

  • Findings: 4. Fixed 2, rejected 0, skipped nits 1, open 0
    • [Important] apps/web/src/composer-logic.ts:97. With a modifier send shortcut, the send chord Mod+Enter is also the Start in Background binding, so the setting flipped it to foreground and no key started in the background. Fixed in a1a8212c49
    • [Nit] SettingsPanels.tsx:1561, docs/user/keybindings.md. The hint named the wrong chord for modifier send shortcuts. Fixed in a1a8212c49 (remap-aware label skipped)
    • [Nit] SettingsPanels.tsx:1564. macOS showed "โŒ˜ + Alt". Fixed in 03f9c88915
  • Pre-existing: with a modifier send shortcut and the setting off, no key starts a new thread in the foreground (Mod+Enter and Mod+Alt+Enter both start it in the background)
  • Decisions for you: the Keybindings page still names the command "Composer: Start in Background" while the setting makes it open the thread
  • Outcome: clean with open nits

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval โ€” This PR adds an opt-in background-start workflow for new threads across keyboard, button, and citation submission paths, backed by a new persisted client setting. The behavior is off by default and scoped, but it spans shared settings contracts and production composer behavior.

๐Ÿ“ Walkthrough

A new setting controls whether sends from draft threads default to the background. Composer intent resolution applies the preference and configured send shortcut. The settings panel, search entry, reset behavior, and keybindings documentation include the setting.

Changes: Background thread sends

Define and expose the preference
packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.ts, docs/user/keybindings.md
The settings contract defaults the preference to false. The General settings panel adds a toggle, reset action, and shortcut guidance. Settings search and keybindings documentation describe the preference.
Resolve draft-thread send intent
apps/web/src/composer-logic.ts, apps/web/src/composer-logic.test.ts
Composer logic derives the default intent from draft status and the preference. Key-based intent resolution accounts for the configured shortcut. Tests cover shortcut and prompt combinations.
Pass intent through composer submission
apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/useComposerCommandKey.ts
Message and citation submission receive the default intent. The command-key handler receives the preference and uses the resolved intent when handling an active menu.

Keep the modifier-required send chord out of menu selection.

When startNewThreadsInBackground is on and sendShortcut is mod-enter, Ctrl+Enter resolves to "background". If a suggestion menu is open, that intent equals plainSendIntent. Line 211 then selects the highlighted suggestion instead of sending the draft. The previous foreground-only condition let this send chord through. Restrict default-intent menu selection to an unmodified Enter or Tab so the configured send chord still submits.

Not changing this. With the setting on, the user's send chord in a new thread is now the plain send. The open menu takes the plain send on every route, so this matches existing threads on main.

On an existing thread with the mod-enter shortcut, Ctrl+Enter matches no binding. composer.sendAlternate only applies while a turn runs, and shortcutForContext moves its chord to Mod+Shift+Enter when the shortcut requires a modifier (apps/web/src/keybindings.ts:114). So it falls through to return defaultIntent (apps/web/src/composer-logic.ts:111), and the menu check at useComposerCommandKey.ts:211 selects the item. Plain Enter with mod-enter also selects the item, because it resolves to null.

Only selecting on unmodified Enter or Tab would also change how existing threads behave, which is outside this PR. With the setting on, Mod+Alt+Enter still bypasses the menu and opens the thread.

@StivenKN You're right. I incorrectly assumed that the configured send chord must bypass an open menu.

The menu takes precedence for the default send intent, regardless of whether that chord requires a modifier. Using plainSendIntent preserves that behavior when the setting changes the default to "background". My proposed restriction would also change existing-thread behavior.

I withdraw the finding. No change is needed here.

Document the prompt-specific shortcut behavior.

With mod-enter-multiline enabled, mod+Enter can send a multiline prompt in the background instead of opening the thread. Document mod+Alt+Enter as the shortcut that opens the thread for multiline prompts, while mod+Enter opens it for single-line prompts.

โœ… Confirmed as addressed by @StivenKN

Clarified in 64ffce49f3. The paragraph now says that when the send shortcut requires mod+Enter, including for a multiline prompt, mod+Enter starts the thread in the background, so use mod+Alt+Enter. The single-line case is covered by the sentence before it.

@StivenKN The updated paragraph addresses the finding. It states the multiline exception and directs users to mod+Alt+Enter to open the thread. The preceding sentence covers the single-line case. No further change is needed.
