Problem

When a server update requires a newer launcher protocol, the preflight only tells the user to update the launcher. A stale CLI earlier on PATH can then report that t3 service update is already using its own version, leaving the same recovery loop with no indication of which CLI ran.

Reproduced on Linux with the real preflight command using launcher protocol 2 and with isolated installed/current service fixtures.

Change

The preflight names the offered and required protocols and gives an exact-version installer command, version/PATH checks, and the default installed CLI path for service repair. It also explains why updating the desktop package or repairing through a stale CLI does not update that CLI.

Unchanged service install and service update results now identify the executing CLI path through the existing invocation resolver. Protocol acceptance and update channel selection stay the same.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/13239 Triaged bug via the automated issue flow; accepted recovery-message scope in #13239.

Verification

  • Main refreshed at b14d9c2f6a, incorporating 51a7118b70. Preserved upstream removal of a redundant protocol-2 test case; production fix files are byte-identical to the previously reviewed/captured head. Six focused service/update test files: 64/64 passed. Targeted lint, formatting, and server typecheck passed. Earlier runtime evidence remains applicable to unchanged production code.

  • Red tests at 0e141f470c: four failures and four passes, independently reproduced by the second reviewer. Failures show missing protocol/recovery guidance and missing CLI paths in both no-op commands.

  • vp test run src/cli/service.test.ts src/cloud/servicePreflight.test.ts src/cli/invocation.test.ts in apps/server: 15/15 passed at dd9793b9dc.

  • Targeted lint and formatting on the five changed files passed. Server TypeScript check reported zero errors. Two fresh, independent Sol/Opus reviews returned MERGE.

  • Refreshed from main before publication; already up to date. Focused tests rerun successfully.

All 14/14 before/after runtime rows exited zero on Linux x86_64 with Node 26.12.1 and genuine standalone builds. Production status gates returned current=true; all eight no-op fixture hash maps stayed unchanged. Process traces show only read-only systemd/loginctl probes.

Visual matrix is empty under the server-only text-output proof exception; no client renderer or layout changed. Proof scope audit.

Final proof audit: sufficient; all required rows inspected and one affected runtime row independently reproduced.

The printed installer/repair advice, actual desktop package upgrade, and macOS launchd repair were not executed. Runtime fixtures prove the unchanged-service output without mutating the live service.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at beca79a

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable β€” The PR is a focused recovery-message fix: it identifies the CLI path involved in no-op service operations and provides exact steps for resolving stale launcher protocol mismatches. Service reconciliation and protocol decisions remain unchanged, with regression coverage added for the affected messages.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

CLI service messages now identify the resolved entry path. Protocol-mismatch preflight reasons include protocol details and recovery guidance. Tests cover both changes.

Possibly related issues

  • pingdotgg/t3code#17532: The change checks for older t3 executables on PATH and provides CLI path guidance. It does not repair the launchd PATH.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#22235: The change explains protocol mismatch recovery and why desktop-app updates do not update a separate CLI. It does not change server ownership or routing.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template's Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections and gives substantial detail for each. It explains the stale-CLI recovery loop and the preflight and no-op output changes. It cites the triaged issue #13239 and reports test, lint, typecheck, and runtime evidence. Gaps remain: the Scope section links an issue and cites an automated triage flow, but it does not quote the maintainer approval comment the template asks for. The Verification section has no UI screenshots, which is acceptable because the change is server-only text output and the author explains this. The description also names the models and harnesses used, as the template requests. Several evidence links point to external hosts that a reviewer may not be able to open.

Assert the path-qualified repair command.

The legacy-protocol fixture reaches the mismatch branch, and production currently emits ~/.local/bin/t3 service install. The current substring assertion also accepts bare t3 service install, so it would not detect that regression.

  • test(server): assert preflight names the explicit ~/.local/bin t3 pathbeca79a

Addressed the repair-path assertion finding in beca79a993: the existing test now requires ~/.local/bin/t3 service install, so reverting to a shadowable bare command fails the regression test. Focused preflight test, targeted lint, and formatting pass. Production code is unchanged.
