On the iPhone Duo, list search lived in the unfolded sidebar's bottom toolbar and moved to a navigation bar button when folded, because UIKit puts a folded column's toolbar in the vertical bar. Every fold re-placed the search controller, which replaces its search field, and a list hidden behind its detail during the fold needed a new controller.

The Duo now searches from a full-width field at the bottom of the list in every pose, using the glass field the custom workspace toolbar already drew. A fold only changes its width. The field rises only once the keyboard reaches it, because UIKit also reports keyboards without height, with a hardware keyboard and around a fold.

This layer also makes header actions update when only their contents change. React Navigation keeps a screen's descriptor, and with it the native header, while the options stay shallowly equal, and NativeStackScreenOptions keeps each option function's identity stable, so a re-application never reached the header. After an unfold and a fold, the thread list was left without Compose. A re-application now hands the header new function wrappers.

Verification

  • NativeHeaderToolbar.test.tsx: its navigation mock now skips shallowly equal options, as React Navigation does. All four tests fail without the fix.
  • Recorded at this PR's base c818e4b66e7 and head aaad7cee174 (pre-restack commits; Screens t3.32 development client with a matching fingerprint). The thread list is unfolded, then folded:

Before: unfolded search sits in the sidebar's bottom toolbar; folded, it becomes a header button

After: the glass search field stays at the bottom of the list in both poses

  • The header-action fix is covered by the test above. This recorded flow did not lose Compose at the base either, so the videos show only the search change.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval β€” This PR changes the iPhone Duo's default search placement and keyboard/layout behavior, while also modifying shared native header update and remount behavior. The new UI and cross-cutting navigation changes are broader than a small isolated fix and merit human review.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

The workspace search input is now shared between toolbar implementations. On iOS Duo devices, list search appears above the keyboard. Native header search placement and navigation option updates also change.

Changes: Workspace Search and Native Headers

Layer / File(s)Summary
Shared workspace search field
apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceSearchField.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceToolbar.tsx
The new shared field handles tab-specific labels, pull-request query limits, submission, and clearing. The workspace toolbar connects it to existing search state and callbacks.
Duo-device search presentation
apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceToolbar.ios.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceRootScreen.tsx
On iOS Duo devices, list search appears above the keyboard for all device poses. The toolbar handles focus, query updates, clearing, and cancellation. Bottom clearance uses the keyboard height, bottom inset, and toolbar dimensions.
Native header search and option updates
apps/mobile/src/native/StackHeader.tsx, apps/mobile/src/native/NativeHeaderToolbar.test.tsx, apps/mobile/src/native/V5StackHeader.ios.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/layout/createWorkspaceStackNavigator.ios.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceToolbar.ios.tsx
Native search placement is set directly, and covered-column state and epoch-based remounting are removed. Navigation option functions receive refreshed wrappers. The test mock retains rendered items when options are shallowly unchanged.

Move the Duo search field above the software keyboard.

When the Duo search field receives focus, AboveKeyboard stays at the bottom of the workspace. Its transform remains zero because keyboard.height.value is non-negative and bottom is at least 12. The 48-point search field therefore sits inside the ordinary iOS keyboard frame in both Duo poses. Users cannot see or interact with the search control while typing.

Move the field upward only after the keyboard reaches it. Keep the separate list padding unchanged.

Not an issue here: useReanimatedKeyboardAnimation().height is negative while the keyboard is shown (it runs from 0 to -keyboardHeight; the library's own doc example translates a view by height directly). So min(0, height + bottom - 8) turns negative, and the field rises, once the keyboard passes its bottom edge, and stays put for zero-height keyboards (hardware keyboard, around a fold). Software-keyboard clearance was checked folded and unfolded (see #23148).

@juliusmarminge You’re right. I incorrectly assumed that useReanimatedKeyboardAnimation().height was positive.

With negative keyboard height, the existing expression lifts the field as intended. With zero height and bottom >= 12, the transform stays at zero. My suggested sign change was incorrect. I withdraw this finding.

Thanks for the clarification.

5Learning: In apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceToolbar.ios.tsx, react-native-keyboard-controller's useReanimatedKeyboardAnimation().height runs from 0 to negative keyboard height. AboveKeyboard correctly uses Math.min(0, keyboard.height.value + bottom - 8) to lift the Duo search field and keep it stationary for zero-height keyboards because bottom is at least 12. Do not invert the keyboard-height sign based on an assumption that the value is positive.
