Part 2 of 6 of the T3 Code redesign. The composer and timeline don't match the new design, and pending work (approvals, questions, plans, queued messages) is spread between the composer and the timeline.

  • composer (option C): an integrated tray with the branch chip on the left and separate model, reasoning and permission controls on the right. Prompt capped at eight lines; controls collapse in narrow panes.
  • work and notices move into the composer tray. That covers approvals with keyboard shortcuts, questions, plan actions, the queue with drag reorder, and child-thread approvals.
  • timeline rows, tool rows, "Worked for" summaries, attachments, code blocks and tables follow the design. Live work rows keep the existing interrupt action.
  • suggestion, branch and model pickers use the shared menu primitives.

Needs approval: Theo for vite.config.ts (lint ceilings only); Theo or Julius for packages/contracts (keybindings, orchestrationV2, terminal).

Evidence

base 9873e800af (maria/redesign/1-primitives-shell), head 5fa20ef0cc (maria/redesign/2-composer-timeline). captured at 1280x720 from separately seeded worktrees using the same showcase, approval, and question replay scenarios. elapsed times, paths, and sidebar history vary between runs.

the composer tray puts the ref control on the left and separates model, reasoning, and permissions on the right (dark).

before: empty composer with combined model and reasoning control

after: empty composer with separate model, reasoning, and permissions controls

the same composer change in light mode.

before: light composer with combined model and reasoning control

after: light composer with separate model, reasoning, and permissions controls

command approval moves from inline timeline actions into the composer tray.

before: inline command approval in the timeline

after: command approval panel with approve and decline actions in the tray

the question uses the integrated tray with numbered choices and its own actions.

before: question options above the old composer

after: numbered question options and answer action in the integrated tray

the same queued message moves from a dashed timeline bubble into a compact tray row.

before: summarize the changes queued as a dashed timeline bubble

after: summarize the changes queued inside the composer tray

the finished turn uses the compact "worked for" summary and shows diff totals.

before: finished showcase turn with worked for summary

after: finished showcase turn with compact worked for summary and diff totals

expanded work shows compact tool rows with file diff totals.

before: expanded showcase work with read, edit, and command rows

after: compact expanded showcase tool rows with edit diff totals

the same showcase answer uses the updated code frame and table typography.

before: showcase typescript code block and three-row results table

after: updated typescript code frame and results table

clicking approve clears the tray and lets the replay finish.

after: approving a pending command and returning to the finished timeline

selecting the recommended question option sends the answer and returns to the running timeline.

after: answering the tray question with strict schemas

all screenshots were inspected at full size. each uploaded image was opened in the browser. both uploaded recordings were played to the end and seeking was checked.

unverified: queue drag reordering was not captured; attempts to add a second queued message crossed the replay approval boundary and advanced the queue. the single-message queue is shown above. enter approves only when focus is outside editors and controls, so the composer keeps its own enter (ComposerApprovalPanel.tsx); clicking approve is shown. the detached checkouts show "select ref", so a named branch chip was not captured. this is replay evidence, not verification of paid-provider execution, mobile, desktop shell behavior, or the full test suite.

Verification

Every layer, rebased on main 94690956fd, passes typecheck, knip, lint and format on Blacksmith on its own. At layer 6, the web suite passes (unit and browser). The desktop suite fails one libsecret test, which fails the same way on main. GitHub CI runs the full suite on every layer.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The redesign changes the default Mod+Shift+L behavior to cite selected assistant text rather than switch worktrees in that context. This existing keyboard interaction needs human confirmation.

Needs human approval because:

  • Per-review cost limit exceeded (workspace setting). Approvability relies on correctness review in order to determine eligibility

Use @variant light for the light-only overrides.

The existing light variant can match :root, including the black-chrome appearance. Nest the selectors under :root so the light behavior remains unchanged.

apps/web/src/components/chat/QueuedRunsControl.tsx: 1

231-249: External image Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Quick win

Skip the row-position measurement when the row order has not changed.

This useLayoutEffect has no dependency array, so it runs after every commit. Each run reads offsetTop for every queue row, which forces a synchronous layout. QueuedRunsControl re-renders when useThreadProjection updates, and that projection changes while a turn streams. The control therefore forces a layout on streamed updates even though no row moves. The repository guidelines ask that changes consider their performance impact.

Run the measurement only when the order of row keys changes. Drag previews and persisted reorders both change that order.

Proposed fix
diff
1+ const rowOrderKey = previewItems.map((item) => item.key).join("\0");
2 // oxlint-disable-next-line t3code/no-unreasoned-state-sync -- animates queue rows from their previous layout after a drag preview or persisted reorder
3 useLayoutEffect(() => {
4 ...
5 previousRowTops.current = nextTops;
6- });
7+ }, [rowOrderKey]);

Compute rowOrderKey before the early return. Hooks must not move below the items.length === 0 return.

As per coding guidelines: "Make sure all changes are considerate of performance impact."

Disable the document shortcut while the approval card is collapsed.

expanded starts as true, but users can collapse the card. A collapsed file-change approval hides approval.files and shows only optional approval.detail. If detail is absent, the user cannot identify the approval, but Enter on a non-interactive document target can still invoke the primary decision. Add the collapsed-state guard used by the pending-input panel.

expanded now participates in canRespond, which the document shortcut effect depends on. collapsing removes both shortcuts, and expanding restores them.

@maria-rcks Including expanded in canRespond addresses this finding. Because the effect depends on canRespond, collapsing the card removes the Enter and Escape listener. Expanding the card restores it when responses are enabled.

Do not show shortcut keycaps on child-thread approvals.

designLabels makes ComposerPendingApprovalActions render esc and ⏎ keycaps beside Decline and Approve. ChildApproval has no keydown handler, so these keys do nothing for the child request. ComposerApprovalPanel listens for document-level Enter and Escape. When the parent thread also has an active approval, Enter approves the parent request, not the child request the user is looking at. The visible hint can therefore make the user approve the wrong request.

Pass designLabels only from the surface that owns the shortcuts. Another option is a separate prop that hides the keycaps but keeps the "Decline"/"Approve" labels.

Parse useNowMinute() as UTC in ResetCountdown.

useNowMinute() returns a UTC minute string without seconds or a zone designator, such as 2026-10-18T23:59. Date.parse reads that form as local time, so remainingMs is off by the user's UTC offset. At UTC+5, a reset two minutes away shows "in 5h 2m". At UTC-5, the banner shows "now" before the reset.

Append the UTC suffix before parsing, as TurnFoldUsageLimit already does.

Make the severity sort match the documented group order.

The doc comment on Line 34 says machine notices come before attention notices. The new sort orders by severity across groups. Array.prototype.sort is stable, so group order now only breaks ties. An attention error, such as "Run failed", now goes above an environment warning or info notice. Attached mode shows only first and moves the rest into the +N popover, so this order decides which notice the user sees.

Decide which rule is intended. If group comes first, sort inside each group. If severity comes first, update the doc comment.

Check disabled in the cancel handlers.

ComposerBanner.Dismiss renders a <span role="button">. A native disabled attribute has no effect on a span. Unless Dismiss suppresses events for non-native elements, onClick and onKeyDown still call onRespond(approval.requestId, "cancel") in two cases: when canOperateThread is false, and while a response is in flight. Gate failed-run retry on canOperateThread.

A read-only connection can receive the Retry action because canRetryFailedRun does not include canOperateThread. The banner lane then renders Retry.

onRetryFailedRun also lacks an operate-scope guard. useOrchestrationCommand rejects the retry locally with "This connection cannot change threads or projects." before startThreadTurn runs. Add the scope check in both places.

Fix TEST_COMMAND_PATTERN: runner names match as word prefixes.

The runner alternatives have no trailing boundary. Therefore, rg available src and cat avatar.tsx match ava; cat vitest.config.ts and ls jest.config.js also match runner names in filenames.

This can classify a failed non-test command as a failed test run. failedTestCount is optional, but deriveFailedTests uses commandRunsTests without requiring that count. The timeline can therefore show a failed-tests indicator, and TimelineWorkGroupRows.tsx can apply severe-failure styling.

Require a command boundary after the matched runner. Add rg available src and cat vitest.config.ts to the existing false-positive test.

Guard the failed-run retry path before starting a new turn.

canRetryFailedRun does not check read-only scope, threadDetailLoading, or clientSettingsHydrated. The retry button is disabled only while another retry is running. A retry can therefore be invoked while the thread is loading or the environment is read-only. Checkpoint-revert clicks are blocked by the composer's inert container, but the handler should still keep the state guard.

Correct the pending-approval behavior in the documentation.

For an actionable pending approval, a nonempty message declines the approval and redirects the agent. It is not queued for after the run. Keep this correction scoped to approvals; pending questions and non-actionable approvals follow separate states.

updated the approval guidance in docs/user/permission-modes.md: empty Enter approves an actionable approval; a nonempty message declines it and redirects the agent.

@maria-rcks The updated text in docs/user/permission-modes.md addresses the finding. It correctly limits the approve-or-decline behavior to actionable approvals.

Correct the pending-approval text and the remaining "allow" label.

The text still says a message sent while a request waits "is queued for after the run". useComposerSend behaves differently for an actionable pending approval: a nonempty message declines the approval and redirects the agent. Only pending questions and approvals that cannot be answered follow a different path.

Line 24 also still says "to allow". The card now labels its actions Approve and Decline. Use the same label in the text.

Keep the local dispatch active after a successful retry.

onRetryFailedRun calls resetLocalDispatch() on success and on failure. onSend resets the local dispatch only when the turn did not start (Line 1510-1515). sendStandaloneCommand also resets only on failure.

After startThreadTurn succeeds, the projection can still report the old failed run for a short time. During that window, these conditions all hold:

  • isSendBusy is false.
  • retryingFailedRunId is null.
  • sendInFlightRef.current is false.
  • serverRuntime.status is still "failed".

canRetryFailedRun in ChatView is therefore still true, and the Retry action is enabled again. A second click starts a duplicate turn with the same prompt and attachments. The composer can also briefly show an idle state before the new run appears.

Call resetLocalDispatch() only on failure. useLocalDispatchState can then clear the dispatch when the new run arrives, as it does for onSend.

Note

Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria

onRetryFailedRun in apps/web/src/components/chat/useComposerSend.ts now keeps local dispatch and the retry marker on success until the failed run changes. failure still clears both and removes the optimistic message.

@maria-rcks The supplied code confirms the fix. Success preserves local dispatch and the retry marker. The guard blocks another retry for the same failedRunId. Failure clears both states and removes the optimistic message.

Check the string length before encoding it to measure its byte length.

Buffer.byteLength measured strings without allocating. utf8.encode(value).byteLength allocates a full copy of the string. summarizeDynamicValue and boundDynamicValue call it on serialized tool JSON, and that JSON can be many megabytes. projectTurnItemForWire runs for every materialized timeline item (ProjectionStore.ts:5698-5728), so each large dynamic_tool item now adds one extra temporary buffer as large as its JSON.

A UTF-8 encoding is never shorter than the UTF-16 length of the string. A string with length > max is therefore always over the limit. Check that first, as truncateDetail already does.

Remove hasThreadNow and hasQueuedTurns from the timelineFooter null check.

This change moves ThreadNow and the queued-run control out of the footer and into ComposerSurface.Shell. The null check still includes both flags. When the thread has "now" activity or queued turns, but no handoff, status line, or guest messages, timelineFooter becomes an empty fragment instead of null. The timeline then mounts a footer with no content.

Check the footer on only what it still renders: pendingHandoff, threadStatusLine, and pendingGuestMessageCount.

Skip +++/--- only for file headers. Count them inside hunks.

countPatchLines skips every line that starts with --- or +++. Inside a hunk, those lines are real changes. Some examples:

  • Deleting an SQL, Lua, or Haskell comment -- note gives --- note.
  • Deleting a Markdown or YAML --- separator gives ----.
  • Adding a line that starts with ++ gives +++….

In each case the fold header and wire item show a deletion or addition count that is too low. Treat ---/+++ as file headers only before the first @@ of each file section.

countPatchLines in wireProjection.ts now tracks hunk state and resets it for each file section. it skips file headers only outside hunks. the existing WireProjection.test.ts regression covers header-like changed lines across multiple files.

@maria-rcks The supplied countPatchLines implementation addresses this finding. It resets hunk state at each diff boundary and skips +++/--- headers only outside hunks. Header-like changed lines inside hunks now contribute to the counts.
