feat(web): style dictation with the redesign primitives#28844
Part 5 of 6 of the T3 Code redesign. Main now ships dictation (#30625, #30623, #30624, #31059), so this layer no longer carries its own voice implementation. It restyles main's dictation UI with the redesign primitives and changes no behavior: the waveform pill, Send, the live transcript, setup, consent, Settings > Voice, text-field dictation and preview annotation dictation all work as on main.
- composer: the mic glyph uses the composer icon colour, and the timer and status use the type roles. The live transcript box is a
surface-well, and the error pill uses the destructive tone. - setup dialog: the model card is a
surface-cardwith type roles, matching the other setup dialogs. - Settings > Voice: model cards, browser, benchmarks and dictionary use
Text,SettingsNote,Badgeand the ghostButtonrows. The microphone test scrubber is the redesign'sMediaScrubber. vite.config.ts: removes the temporary lint ceilings that layer 1 set for main's dictation files.
The design file has no desktop voice frames, so Settings > General and Appearance and the composer's attach button served as the reference.

Evidence
Driven in the real dev app with a seeded database at 1280 x 720. Before is layer 4 (main's dictation inside the redesign shell), after is this layer. There is no microphone on the test machine, so the page's getUserMedia returned a stream playing a speech clip. The clip went through the real AudioWorklet, /ws/voice stream and Moonshine Streaming Tiny transcription. The footer model label differs between runs because the draft's thread changed; that is unrelated to this change.

Full flow, from idle through recording and transcribing to the inserted text:
Unverified: the desktop preview annotation overlay in Electron (unchanged), the PR comment, review and diff comment editors (they use the same controls as the citation editor that was driven), and mobile (not touched).
Verification
Every layer, rebased on main 94690956fd, passes typecheck, knip, lint and format on Blacksmith on its own. At layer 6, the web suite passes (unit and browser). The desktop suite fails one libsecret test, which fails the same way on main. GitHub CI runs the full suite on every layer.

Approvability
Verdict: Needs Human Approval
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The change updates dictation styling and microphone placement, including mobile expansion and unavailable-state explanations. It also adds a line-level oxlint suppression in ChatComposer.tsx, which requires human review under the repository’s explicit policy.

Dictation now keeps short audio that ends before the stream is ready, and the settings test helper no longer leaks on failure. A deliberately cancelled model download can still show "Could not download the model" with a retry button. The remaining open items are minor or edge-case issues, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

correct(update.text.committed)runsapplySpeechCustomWordson the full committed transcript for everyfeed. For each token, that function checks up to 4 token windows. Each window is compared with up to about 100 dictionary keys usingeditDistance. The committed text grows for the whole recording, which can last up to five minutes. The total cost is therefore quadratic in recording length, and it runs on the server thread for every chunk. The repository instructions say: "Make sure all changes are considerate of performance impact." Committed text is append-only from the model's point of view. Cache the corrected result for the longest unchanged committed prefix, and correct only the new suffix. Republish after every non-sync voice event.
The preload applies the optimistic lock before sending start or key. If useDictationShortcut.onKeyDown returns before changing speech state, setText(event.text) does not render when the text is unchanged. No publish follows, so the preload receives no state update and can remain locked.
Force a render after each non-sync event:

@maria-rcks Verified the fix in apps/web/src/components/preview/PreviewAnnotationSpeech.tsx. Each non-sync event increments setAcknowledgement at Line 136, which triggers a render and state republish even when the draft and speech phase do not change. The sync handling remains unchanged. Stop the GPU probe child after it replies, and add a timeout.
The probe child is spawned with an "ipc" channel. In Node, an open IPC channel keeps the child's event loop alive. The parent never calls child.disconnect() or child.kill() after the message event. As a result, the probe process stays alive for the whole server lifetime. That process also keeps the GPU backends that transcribe-cpp loaded during getAvailableBackends().
SpeechService.currentStatus caches this promise in gpuDevices ??=. If backend enumeration never sends a message and never exits, /api/voice/status and every status-returning voice endpoint wait forever. The cached promise means a retry cannot recover.
To fix this, end the child after the first valid reply or after a timeout.

Drive these timeouts with TestClock instead of wall-clock time.
Both tests use it.live and pass only after a real timeout expires:
- The first test waits for the 2,500 ms
Effect.timeoutinresetStreamOrThrow. - The second test waits for the 2,500 ms
ORPHANED_TRANSCRIPTION_GRACE_MSinpreemptOrphaned.
native is mocked in this file, so neither test uses a subprocess or network fixture. Both delays come from Effect timers, so TestClock controls them. Convert both tests to it.effect:
- Fork the operation.
- Call
TestClock.adjust("2500 millis"). - Join the fiber.
This removes about 5 seconds of real waiting from the suite and makes the tests independent of timing.
As per coding guidelines: "it.live is wall-clock and only for subprocess or network fixtures" and "A test that needs a timeout to pass is wrong."

apps/server/src/speech/SpeechService.lifecycle.test.ts:483-493,924-945: these tests already assert that reset timeout and orphan preemption release the busy slot. switching them to the test clock is a separate test cleanup, so this review-fix pass leaves them unchanged.
@maria-rcks Understood. The concern is wall-clock waiting, not missing busy-slot assertions. I acknowledge your decision to defer that cleanup from this review-fix pass.

Unmount the screen if the click in renderPanel fails.
renderPanel mounts the screen and then awaits userEvent.click. If the click rejects, the function throws before it returns the screen. The caller never reaches await using _screen, so the root stays mounted and the container stays in document.body. The leaked DOM can distort later tests and hide the original failure.
The testing rules require a helper that renders and then clicks to hold the screen in an AsyncDisposableStack. The helper must move() the screen out only on success.

The queued-start tests start fake timers with using _timers = fakeTimers(); before await using _screen = await render(...). Streaming audio buffered before the stream is ready is lost on every normal stop.
releaseRecording calls platform.cancelRecording, which runs cleanupCapture() with preserveQueuedAudio = false and empties chunks. VoiceInputController.finishRecording calls recorder.stop() first and then releaseAudioSession(). releaseAudioSession() calls releaseRecording because configureRecording sets recordingConfigured. Only after that does the controller call streaming.finish.
In browserVoiceInput.ts, the worklet pushes PCM into chunks until live is set. live is set only after the server sends "ready", which can wait for a model load or a slow relay. When "ready" arrives later, session.then feeds an empty buffer.
Trigger: a hold-to-talk press or short dictation that ends before the stream is ready. Consequence: "No speech was detected", or a transcript that is missing its start. The browserVoiceInput.test.ts case passes because it never goes through the controller's release step.
Fix: separate release from cancel. A release keeps queued audio while the streaming session is still active. A cancelled operation is still discarded, because invalidateOperation aborts the signal before releaseResources runs. Add a controller-level test with a delayed "ready" message.

Replace speech model options when the provider or model changes.
speechPostProcessingModelSelection passes through generic deepMerge, which preserves omitted nested fields. A patch that changes instanceId or model without options can retain options from the previous selection.
Apply the same replacement rule used for textGenerationModelSelection: when instanceId or model changes, use only the patched options instead of merging with the current options.

speech post-processing selections now replace options when a provider or model is supplied, matching text generation. options-only patches merge by option id, and the existing cross-provider test covers both settings.

@maria-rcks Confirmed in the current code. Speech selections now use the same replacement rule as text generation when instanceId or model is supplied. Options-only patches merge by option ID.
The cross-provider regression test covers both settings. I inspected the code and test assertions; I did not run tests.

Enforce the managed driver allowlist before speech cleanup.
toEffective applies isDriverAllowed, but resolveSpeechPostProcessingModelSelection returns the original selection when no fallback passes. postProcessTranscript then resolves the selection again without the predicate. ProviderRegistry.getProviders publishes every provider row, so the cleanup path can call generateTranscriptionPostProcessing for an enabled provider whose driver the managed policy denies.
Pass the managed allowlist through the cleanup path, and return the transcript unchanged when no allowed fallback exists. Do not retain a denied selection as the exhausted fallback. The predicate check only in resolveTextGenerationProvider does not close this path.

resolveSpeechPostProcessingModelSelection in packages/shared/src/serverSettings.ts now checks the managed driver allowlist for the configured model and fallbacks. postProcessTranscript in apps/server/src/speech/postProcessing.ts passes that predicate and returns the original transcript when no allowed provider is ready.

Pass isLiteralPendingAnswer when collapsing the dictation cursor.
For an allowed literal pending answer, the dictation controller returns an expanded selection offset. The current commitDraft call converts it as non-literal and can collapse token-like text to one character, placing the caret at the wrong offset.
readDraft correctly provides snapshot.expandedCursor; only the conversion in commitDraft needs the literal flag.

onCancel aborts the active server download, but runModelOperation still marks any rejection as a failed download. ModelRow renders the failure state before the cancelled state, so a deliberate cancellation can display “Could not download the model” and “Retry download”.
Track the cancelled model ID before starting the cancellation request, and skip markDownloadFailed for that model.

no change needed. downloadModel in speech/http.ts already catches SpeechDownloadCancelledError with Effect.void and returns the updated models successfully. deliberate cancellation therefore does not enter runModelOperation's rejection handler in VoiceSettingsPanel.tsx. ModelRow retains the cancellation message and normal download action.

@maria-rcks You are correct. In apps/server/src/speech/http.ts, Line 91 catches SpeechDownloadCancelledError with Effect.void, then the handler returns the updated models. Cancellation itself therefore does not trigger runModelOperation’s rejection handler.
I missed this HTTP error handling. No change is needed for this finding, and I withdraw it.

Would a follow-up that lets the iOS app use this environment transcription be welcome?
Today iOS always transcribes with Apple's on-device SpeechTranscriber. That struggles with mixed-language dictation (Spanish with English technical terms, as in #19091) and is unavailable before iOS 26. With this PR, the user's own computer can do better with Parakeet or Whisper.
The change I have in mind stays inside the boundaries in docs/internals/voice-input.md:
- A client-local setting under Settings > Microphone: transcribe on this iPhone (the current default) or on the T3 environment.
- With the environment selected, the app records 16 kHz mono linear PCM instead of AAC, checks
/api/voice/status, and sends the samples through the existingtranscribeEnvironmentPcm. - No server or contract changes.
I would stack it on this PR. If you'd prefer a different shape, or would rather keep iOS on-device only, I'm happy to follow your lead.
With the new API credit on subs from openai would it make sense to add cloud support as well?
Most people with codex subs will get effectively infinite usage of GPT-Transcribe or even GPT-Live-Transcribe

+1 to the iOS follow-up proposed above. I'd use it every day: I dictate on the iPhone in Spanish mixed with English technical terms, and my environment is a Mac mini that is always on. Running Parakeet or Whisper there would suit me much better than on-device transcription.
would be better if it has option to pick model already download on system (as some people already have a good chunky model already downloaded for local stt like via hex.
Will it be possible to download other models for voice? A free tool that does this very well is https://vowen.ai/
Tiny whisper is not bad but I would not call it great either, esp if you are not a native English speaker.

applySpeechCustomWords("C++", ["C++"]) returns C++++ (and .NET becomes ..NET), corrupting correctly spelled dictionary terms with edge symbols. The replacement adds the term’s symbols and then appends the same symbols extracted as token punctuation; preserve only punctuation that is not already part of the matched term.

Toggling filler-word removal during an active transcription returns internal_error instead of speech_busy, so clients cannot distinguish an expected busy state from a server failure. updateFillerWordRemoval can fail with SpeechBusyError via exclusive, but this generic Effect.catch maps every error to internal_error; handle that tag as speech_busy before the fallback.
