fix(preview): agent and browser panel show the same page after a late desktop attach#22877

Problem

Sometimes the agent and the browser panel show two different pages for the same tab (#16901).

The server waits 10 s for the desktop to attach its page. If the desktop is late, the server opens its own headless page. Then the desktop shows up and mounts a second page. The agent drives one page and you see the other.

Change

When the server falls back to headless, it marks the tab headless. The desktop sees that and streams the server's page, the same way remote clients already do. Now there is one page.

The hidden-tab screenshot part of this PR is gone. #25184 already fixed that on main.

Scope and approval

Fixes the triaged bug #16901 and its late-attach follow-up #22882. Replaces #18584 and #18873, now closed.

Verification

  • A server test checks that a tab the desktop does not draw gets marked headless. It fails without the fix.
  • Real Linux Electron, with the desktop attaching late: on main, the agent turned the tab red, then blue, but the panel still showed Example Domain. With the fix, the panel followed both changes. Before Β· After
  • Not run: macOS and Windows desktop, mobile. The web change only adds a check for the new flag.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at cbed49b

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable β€” Keeps late-attaching desktop previews on the same headless page the agent controls, using the existing server stream and ignoring stale desktop state. The change is confined to preview-session rendering without changing product defaults.

  • pingdotgg/t3code#22882 describes a late desktop attach creating a separate page while the agent uses the headless page; this change records the server’s headless fallback in the snapshot.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#25543 describes a later panel attach creating a second page for the same tab; this change marks the server fallback tab as headless.

Explanation

Issue #16901 requires one browser page for the agent and the browser panel after a late desktop attach. ServerBrowser marks the server fallback session as headless. PreviewManager publishes the updated snapshot. The web preview path avoids native rendering and stale native overlays for headless server tabs. The server regression test verifies the fallback tab is marked headless and the desktop-rendered tab is not. These changes support shared server-page streaming for the agent and panel.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to the headless session flag, server fallback handling, preview contracts, web rendering checks, and related regression coverage. These changes directly support issue #16901. The previously described hidden-tab screenshot work is absent from the reviewed head, and issues #16701, #18584, and #18873 do not add active coding requirements for this pull request.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description includes all required sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. It explains the reproduction scenario, implementation, linked issues and replaced pull requests, focused server-test coverage, Electron verification with before/after recordings, and untested platforms. It does not include a specific maintainer approval comment, but the description is otherwise complete and relevant.

Gate desktop attachment after fallback selection.

When awaitAttached times out, createTab marks the snapshot headless and creates a server page. DesktopBrowserChannel still accepts an attachment after that timeout. The native renderer can therefore mount briefly beside the fallback page until the headless update unmounts it and queued cleanup closes the native tab. User input during this interval can remain only on the native page.

Treat the timeout decision as a per-tab attachment gate. Keep the existing successful attach path unchanged. A localized post-timeout attachment check or equivalent channel gate is sufficient; a broader authoritative-channel redesign is not warranted by this bounded race.

Note

πŸ€– Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo

Not changing this. A channel gate would not shorten that window. The user sees and types into the native <webview> from the moment the renderer mounts it, not from the moment it attaches: ElectronBrowserHost.tsx mounts every tab that rendersServerTabNatively allows. After the timeout, markHeadless publishes the headless snapshot before createTab builds the headless page (ServerBrowser.ts:724), and the renderer unmounts the native page when that snapshot arrives. That is one event round trip. Blocking the attach would leave the webview on screen for the same time. Before this PR, the split lasted until the tab closed.

@t3dotgg Thanks for clarifying. I conflated channel attachment with native <webview> visibility. Blocking attachment would not unmount the webview sooner. The existing markHeadless update controls that transition and runs before fallback page creation.

I withdraw this finding. No channel gate is needed for the concern I raised.

5Learning: In apps/web/src/browser/ElectronBrowserHost.tsx, native server-tab webview visibility follows rendersServerTabNatively, not DesktopBrowserChannel attachment. Blocking channel attachment does not prevent the mounted webview from accepting user input. Evaluate native-versus-headless visibility through the renderer's snapshot gate rather than treating channel attachment as the visibility boundary.

Mark every fallback page as headless.

When desktopChannel.available is false, createTab creates context.newPage() but skips manager.markHeadless(...). The resulting server snapshot still has headless === undefined. rendersServerTabNatively therefore treats the session as a native desktop session, so the web preview can attach it to the native desktop host while the server browser uses the fallback page. This violates the shared-page contract and can create two pages for one tab.

Move the marker outside the availability guard:

Wait for the renderer hold before relaying Page.captureScreenshot.

runFork(PubSub.publish(captures, tab.key)) only schedules the capture notification. relayFor(tab).receive(...) runs immediately. The renderer establishes the hold later through a separate IPC event. A hidden native tab can therefore receive Page.captureScreenshot before holdFramesForCapture acquires activity. The server capture can then fail to complete, so the screenshot is missed.

Use an acknowledgement handshake and relay the CDP command only after the renderer confirms that the hold is active. Preserve the exact environment, thread, and tab matching. Do not broaden the match to headless sessions; headless sessions have no desktop surface and do not need this hold.

Checked the two remaining CodeRabbit findings against the integrated source and real Linux Electron runtime:

  • The unavailable-channel case cannot acquire a desktop later. Availability is fixed at server startup and requires the desktop-owned browser pipes; without them the channel cannot receive an attachment. The desktop fallback marker is needed for an available channel whose attachment timed out. No broader marker change is needed.
  • Hidden screenshot requests wait for the next painted frame. The capture notification acquires rendering activity even if the CDP request reaches the guest first; an extra acknowledgement does not establish a missing prerequisite. The real candidate completed two captures from a native guest positioned offscreen while thread B was selected, kept drawing for more than 10 seconds, and suspended at turn end. Capture transcript and evidence.

The earlier attachment-gate finding was withdrawn in the existing review thread. Two fresh reviewers found no confirmed code defect. Evidence coverage remains partial and is listed explicitly in the PR verification section.

Do not discard capture requests when the IPC consumer falls behind.

If 17 distinct tabs request screenshots before the capture stream drains, this sliding PubSub discards the oldest tab key. That tab receives no rendering hold, so its hidden screenshot can time out. Use a delivery strategy that retains each pending tab key, such as bounded backpressure or keyed coalescing. Effect documents that sliding PubSubs remove older messages when full. (effect.website)

Not needed anymore. #25184 fixed hidden-tab captures on main, so 4598bd34f1 removes this capture PubSub and the rest of the capture path. DesktopBrowserHost.ts now matches main.

@t3dotgg The supplied DesktopBrowserHost.ts no longer contains the capture PubSub. This finding no longer applies after removal of that capture path. I withdraw it.

@coderabbitai review

The capture path is gone at 4598bd34f1. Only the headless marker is left.

Use it.effect for this mocked test.

This test uses only in-memory fixtures. DesktopBrowserChannel is a Layer.succeed stub, ServerBrowserContexts is mocked, and the page is a fake. It does not start a subprocess or a network listener. The guideline in docs/internals/testing.md says it.live is wall-clock and "only for subprocess or network fixtures," so this test should use it.effect. The test body has no real-time waits, so the TestClock should not change its behavior.

βœ… Confirmed as addressed by @t3dotgg

Note

πŸ€– Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo

Fixed in cbed49b32a. The test uses only stubs, so it now runs with it.effect. It still passes, and it still fails against main's ServerBrowser.ts (expected undefined to be true).

@t3dotgg The supplied code now uses it.effect, which addresses this finding. Your reported pass on the PR and failure against main confirm that the test still detects the regression.
