fix(preview): agent browser tabs show one page and work while hidden#22877

Problem

A desktop browser tab can show a different page from the one the agent controls. If the app renderer is stalled for 45 seconds while Claude opens a background tab, the server's 10-second attachment wait expires; the server creates a page, then the desktop mounts another page when it resumes. Hidden native tabs can also stop drawing and time out during screenshots.

Change

Reuse the preserved fix: mark a server fallback tab as headless for its session and have the desktop stream that page. Ignore stale native overlay state for streamed tabs. Screenshot requests keep a matching hidden native tab drawing until the turn ends, or for 10 seconds when no turn is running. The manual reproduction fixture is uploaded with the evidence rather than committed.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/16901

GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/16901

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow: #16901, GitCafe mirror. This reuses the implementation already on this PR and supersedes #18584 and #18873.

Verification

  • Real packaged Linux Electron 44.9.3 / Chromium 152 under Xvfb, DPR 1, no emulation, zoom 100%, 1440×900, light theme. Before e54e71d725; after e8a30afda4.
  • Literal background-thread sleep/switch control passed on main. The delayed-attachment variant reproduced: the agent changed the same tab red then blue, while the desktop retained Example Domain. On the candidate, the panel followed both changes and the snapshot reported headless:true, with no duplicate hosted webview.
  • A separately attached native tab was hidden with thread B selected. On main its second screenshot timed out after 15 seconds. On the candidate both red and blue screenshots completed, rendering remained active for more than 10 seconds, then suspended at turn end. The primary agent independently inspected the actual offscreen native guest and its blue content.
  • Red proof: restoring main's ServerBrowser.ts made the existing “a tab the desktop does not draw is marked headless, so the desktop streams it” test fail (expected undefined to be true); restoring the fix made it pass.
  • vp test run apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts apps/desktop/src/preview/DesktopBrowserHost.test.ts apps/web/src/browser/captureFrames.test.ts: 30/30 passed. Scoped server, desktop, web, and contracts typechecks reported zero errors; lint on the 15 production/test files and fixture passed. Desktop builds passed for both revisions. Diff whitespace check passed.

Fixture matrix · Evidence index, environment, transcripts, and reproduction details · Uploaded reproduction fixture.

Current head: 7c927b95df, after merging main at 7f7daad985. The only merge conflict combined main's screenshot-queue tests with the capture-notification test; all four were preserved. The production diff is unchanged. The standalone manual fixture was removed from the branch and uploaded above. On this integrated head, all 38 focused tests pass; desktop, server, web, and contracts typechecks and targeted lint/format checks pass. Two fresh independent reviewers found no confirmed code defect. One returned MERGE for code; the other requires maintainer judgment on inherited evidence gaps. Existing captures remain historical proof and do not verify the integrated screenshot queue or current visuals.

Three review rounds found no additional production defect. The final round found the fixture's original path failed knip; the rename resolves that finding. Both final review verdicts remain FIX_FIRST for incomplete evidence coverage, as does the independent proof audit below.

Independent proof audit: a separate agent rebuilt the final candidate and repeated native hidden RED/BLUE captures while B was selected. Both images matched the delivered PNGs exactly (zero-pixel delta results); all four delivered diff pairs matched recomputation. The audit verdict remains INSUFFICIENT for the coverage gaps below.

Evidence coverage is partial: 2/17 rows have captures, and 0/17 are complete across every required variant. H1 and C1 demonstrate the core Linux behaviors. The before recording begins during renderer recovery; the after recording includes the full stall. Unverified: matched dark/narrow variants, native close/new lifecycle, stale-overlay transition, complete floating/drag/resize and navigation/control sequences, empty/loading/failure/download/PDF/popup flows, native floating and pointer/zoom controls, idle/missing-shell 10-second capture release, PiP/recording lease interaction, routing isolation, independent web/390 layout, remote/relay/tunnel, and legacy desktop-runtime tabs. macOS and Windows native hidden/reveal paths were not run. React Native clients were not run; their UI code is unchanged. Electron's minimum width is 840, so native 390-wide capture was unavailable. No unverified row is counted as passed.

Evidence: the same tab is mutated red, then blue after the 45-second app-renderer stall; the panel is revealed and compared with the agent result. For native capture, the tab attaches before hiding, thread B selection is confirmed, two snapshots run, then the turn ends. Exact event timestamps and video captions are in the linked index. Before recording · After recording.

What else changed visibly: the fallback now uses the existing server-stream control bar and letterboxes its 1280×800 source, with stream rasterization differences and native-only controls absent. Real provider prose, IDs, timestamps, worked duration, sidebar ages, chat scroll/wrapping, and changed-file counts differ. The full-client differences are retained in the zero-threshold amplified and >8/255 diffs; no claim of unchanged surrounding pixels is made.

CI: the previously published head e8863b73d2 now has 31 successful checks, including Release Smoke, with none pending or failing. The earlier dependency-resolution failure is no longer the current CI result. The integrated head above has been pushed and needs its own CI results. The bugfix label remains withheld pending green latest-head CI and review follow-up. Evidence coverage remains partial as detailed above.

Implementation: Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code. Integration and evidence: GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex/T3 Code; validation and review: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This bug fix changes preview ownership and rendering across the server, Electron main process, preload bridge, and web renderer, including new persistent headless state and screenshot-driven frame holds. The cross-process runtime behavior is broader than a small self-contained fix and merits human review.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #16901 requires one page for the agent and the desktop panel after delayed attachment. ServerBrowser.ts marks the server fallback session as headless. previewRuntime.ts and ElectronBrowserHost.tsx prevent a second native page for that session. PreviewView.tsx ignores stale native overlay state for server-rendered tabs. The server and desktop tests cover this behavior. The linked coding requirements are satisfied.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The capture-notification path is not connected to issue #16901. DesktopBrowserHost.ts, ElectronBrowserHost.tsx, captureFrames.ts, the preload bridge, IPC contracts, and related tests keep hidden native tabs drawing during screenshots and release them after a turn or 10 seconds. Issue #16901 concerns two pages caused by delayed desktop attachment. It does not require native screenshot liveness.

Resolution

Remove the hidden-native screenshot capture implementation and its bridge, contract, and test changes, or link an active issue that makes this behavior part of the approved scope.

Gate desktop attachment after fallback selection.

When awaitAttached times out, createTab marks the snapshot headless and creates a server page. DesktopBrowserChannel still accepts an attachment after that timeout. The native renderer can therefore mount briefly beside the fallback page until the headless update unmounts it and queued cleanup closes the native tab. User input during this interval can remain only on the native page.

Treat the timeout decision as a per-tab attachment gate. Keep the existing successful attach path unchanged. A localized post-timeout attachment check or equivalent channel gate is sufficient; a broader authoritative-channel redesign is not warranted by this bounded race.

Note

🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo

Not changing this. A channel gate would not shorten that window. The user sees and types into the native <webview> from the moment the renderer mounts it, not from the moment it attaches: ElectronBrowserHost.tsx mounts every tab that rendersServerTabNatively allows. After the timeout, markHeadless publishes the headless snapshot before createTab builds the headless page (ServerBrowser.ts:724), and the renderer unmounts the native page when that snapshot arrives. That is one event round trip. Blocking the attach would leave the webview on screen for the same time. Before this PR, the split lasted until the tab closed.

@t3dotgg Thanks for clarifying. I conflated channel attachment with native <webview> visibility. Blocking attachment would not unmount the webview sooner. The existing markHeadless update controls that transition and runs before fallback page creation.

I withdraw this finding. No channel gate is needed for the concern I raised.

5Learning: In apps/web/src/browser/ElectronBrowserHost.tsx, native server-tab webview visibility follows rendersServerTabNatively, not DesktopBrowserChannel attachment. Blocking channel attachment does not prevent the mounted webview from accepting user input. Evaluate native-versus-headless visibility through the renderer's snapshot gate rather than treating channel attachment as the visibility boundary.

apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts:717-746 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Mark every fallback page as headless.

When desktopChannel.available is false, createTab creates context.newPage() but skips manager.markHeadless(...). The resulting server snapshot still has headless === undefined. rendersServerTabNatively therefore treats the session as a native desktop session, so the web preview can attach it to the native desktop host while the server browser uses the fallback page. This violates the shared-page contract and can create two pages for one tab.

Wait for the renderer hold before relaying Page.captureScreenshot.

runFork(PubSub.publish(captures, tab.key)) only schedules the capture notification. relayFor(tab).receive(...) runs immediately. The renderer establishes the hold later through a separate IPC event. A hidden native tab can therefore receive Page.captureScreenshot before holdFramesForCapture acquires activity. The server capture can then fail to complete, so the screenshot is missed.

Use an acknowledgement handshake and relay the CDP command only after the renderer confirms that the hold is active. Preserve the exact environment, thread, and tab matching. Do not broaden the match to headless sessions; headless sessions have no desktop surface and do not need this hold.

Checked the two remaining CodeRabbit findings against the integrated source and real Linux Electron runtime:

  • The unavailable-channel case cannot acquire a desktop later. Availability is fixed at server startup and requires the desktop-owned browser pipes; without them the channel cannot receive an attachment. The desktop fallback marker is needed for an available channel whose attachment timed out. No broader marker change is needed.
  • Hidden screenshot requests wait for the next painted frame. The capture notification acquires rendering activity even if the CDP request reaches the guest first; an extra acknowledgement does not establish a missing prerequisite. The real candidate completed two captures from a native guest positioned offscreen while thread B was selected, kept drawing for more than 10 seconds, and suspended at turn end. Capture transcript and evidence.

The earlier attachment-gate finding was withdrawn in the existing review thread. Two fresh reviewers found no confirmed code defect. Evidence coverage remains partial and is listed explicitly in the PR verification section.

Added 1 commit

  • test(web): issue 16901 fixture native-hidden steps use the configured porte8863b7

Fixed the configured-port finding in e8863b73d2. Both URLs in the native-hidden instructions now interpolate the listener port. Verified the default 14807 and FIXTURE_PORT=14902: ready URL and both instruction URLs match, and /A returns HTTP 200. Syntax, scoped lint and formatting checks pass.

Do not discard capture requests when the IPC consumer falls behind.

If 17 distinct tabs request screenshots before the capture stream drains, this sliding PubSub discards the oldest tab key. That tab receives no rendering hold, so its hidden screenshot can time out. Use a delivery strategy that retains each pending tab key, such as bounded backpressure or keyed coalescing. Effect documents that sliding PubSubs remove older messages when full. (effect.website)
