Grok was the next provider still living inside apps/server. This moves it into @t3tools/provider-grok, built on the @t3tools/provider-acp package from #17354.

Package

  • ./settings: GrokSettings, moved out of contracts.
  • ./client: label, settings form, and a plain-data glyph. The hand-drawn GrokIcon and the mobile branch are gone; web and mobile draw the icon from the package.
  • ./server: GrokDriver and GrokAdapterV2Driver.
  • ./testing: the ACP flavor, runtime launch, status builders, text generation, usage reader, and xAI extension helpers. The server's replay testkit, the Grok fixture recorder, and orchestration tests drive these directly.

Boundaries

  • The driver gets its cwd from ProviderHost instead of ServerConfig, and imports errors and event loggers from provider-core.
  • effect-acp is a dev dependency, same as in the server, because the license scan walks production dependencies. #17354 has the same fix for provider-acp; that fix is what made its desktop build pass.
  • These tests stay in the server: the adapter test (uses the orchestrator's project store and runtime policy), the status test (uses the shared ACP mock agent), and the title-generation test (uses a server fixture).

Verification

  • Typecheck: provider-grok, provider-acp, provider-cursor, provider-opencode, server, web, mobile.
  • Tests: the package (driver, skills, ACP support, CLI probe, xAI extension and background tasks), plus the server's Grok/ACP adapter, status, text-generation, registry, command-policy, replay-fixture, and web provider-icon tests. 445 passing.
  • vp lint, knip:check workspaces.

Stack: #17330 → #17331 → #17345 → #17349 → #17354 → #17357.

🟡 Medium components/ProviderIcon.tsx:96

Grok providers now render the Codex/OpenAI fallback icon instead of the Grok glyph: getProviderClient("grok") returns undefined because the mobile registry omits grokClient, so this package-icon lookup falls through. Add grokClient to the registry before removing the Grok-specific branch.

Fixed in ec12c3d482: the registry entry was lost when the formatter wrapped the array. grokClient is now registered on mobile.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change defines a dedicated Grok provider package with its own settings, client, server, and testing exports. Server, web, and mobile code now use the package entry points. The change also updates provider icons, repository checks, release-smoke fixtures, and documentation links.

Changes

Grok provider package

Layer / File(s)Summary
Define the Grok package API
packages/provider-grok/*, packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, package.json, scripts/release-smoke.ts, docs/internals/*
The new package defines Grok settings, client metadata, server and testing exports, and TypeScript configuration. The Grok settings schema is removed from contracts. Repository checks, release-smoke fixtures, and documentation links are updated.
Move Grok server modules into the package
packages/provider-grok/src/server/*
Server modules now use package-local settings and support modules. The driver reads cwd from host.paths instead of the server configuration service. Tests use the updated module paths and test setup.
Connect server consumers
apps/server/package.json, apps/server/src/*, apps/server/scripts/record-grok-acp-replay-fixture.ts
The server adds the package dependency and imports Grok drivers, settings, and testing helpers from package entry points. Server tests and the replay-fixture recorder use those imports.
Integrate web and mobile clients
apps/web/package.json, apps/web/src/components/*, apps/web/src/components/settings/providerDriverMeta.ts, apps/mobile/package.json, apps/mobile/src/components/ProviderIcon.tsx, apps/mobile/src/lib/providerClients.ts
The web and mobile apps add the package dependency. The web settings registry and mobile provider registry use grokClient. The provider icon components remove their dedicated Grok icons and use existing fallback behavior.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This is largely a mechanical extraction of the existing Grok provider, with defaults and provider behavior preserved. The new package’s server code imports runtime modules listed only as development dependencies, creating a plausible production-install failure that needs human review.

Declare Grok's runtime imports as production dependencies.

The server entrypoint loads adapter.ts, which imports acpSupport.ts and xaiAcpExtension.ts. These modules import @effect/platform-node and effect-acp at runtime. A production-only pnpm install omits the package-local links because both packages are listed only in devDependencies. Loading @t3tools/provider-grok/server can therefore fail.

Not an issue here. The server bundles workspace packages, and effect-acp and @effect/platform-node are resolved from apps/server, which declares them (@effect/platform-node as a dependency, effect-acp bundled). effect-acp has to stay a dev dependency: as a production dependency the third-party license scan picks it up and fails the desktop build, because it has no license field. That's the same fix as #17354.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for clarifying. My finding assumed an unbundled production install, which does not match the server build. I withdraw the dependency change recommendation. effect-acp must remain a development dependency to avoid the desktop license-scan failure described in #17354.

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, apps/server bundles workspace provider packages. For packages/provider-grok/package.json, runtime imports of effect/platform-node and effect-acp do not require moving those packages into production dependencies: apps/server declares effect/platform-node as a dependency and bundles effect-acp. Keep effect-acp as a development dependency because it has no license field; declaring it as a production dependency causes the third-party license scan to fail the desktop build. This constraint also motivated the fix in PR #17354.
