Cursor was the next provider still living inside apps/server. This moves it into @t3tools/provider-cursor, using the same layout as Pi, Muse, and OpenCode.

Package

  • ./settings: CursorSettings, moved out of contracts.
  • ./client: label, the CURSOR_API_KEY environment field, settings form, and a plain-data glyph. The provider icon on web and mobile now comes from the package. CursorIcon stays in Icons.tsx because the Open In picker uses it for the Cursor editor.
  • ./server: CursorDriver, CursorAdapterV2Driver, the CursorAgentSdk runner layer the server provides once, and the keychain token reader the usage scanner shares.
  • ./testing: adapter identifiers and option builders used by the replay testkit and orchestration tests.

ProviderHost gains credentials Cursor stores its SDK sign-in in the server's secret store. A package can't import ServerSecretStore, so ProviderHost now has credentials(namespace, bindingId). It's an opaque blob store with the shared-credential binding the auth service already uses. On the server it's backed by ProviderCredentialStore; provider-testing backs it with memory. The Cursor driver no longer needs ServerConfig, ServerSettingsService, or ServerSecretStore. The Codex ChatGPT auth will use the same method when Codex moves.

Notes

  • apps/server still declares @cursor/sdk and @napi-rs/keyring, because the CLI archive and desktop sidecar stage external packages from its manifest. knip.jsonc records why.
  • The replay testkit stays in the server and now uses layerTestProviderHost in place of its own copy of the replay ServerConfig.

Verification

  • Typecheck: provider-cursor, provider-core, provider-testing, provider-pi/muse/opencode, contracts, shared, server, web, mobile, desktop, client-runtime.
  • Tests: the package (adapter, driver, auth, credential store, SDK runner, text generation, skills, status, usage limits), provider-core, provider-testing, the server's driver/registry/command-policy/replay/usage tests, and scripts/lib/cursor-sdk-packaging.test.ts. The packaging test only passes with a TMPDIR whose ancestors have no node_modules; cups has a stray /tmp/node_modules.
  • vp lint, knip:check workspaces.

Stack: #17330 → #17331 → #17345 → #17349 → #17354 → #17357.

Every construction of this error wraps a failed credential-store operation and supplies cause. Please make cause required so the underlying failure cannot be omitted from this error channel.

Fixed: cause is now required on ProviderCredentialError (every construction already supplied it).

This adapter factory now takes ProviderHostShape as an explicit service dependency. Please acquire ProviderHost from the Effect environment in the factory and expose that requirement in its return type, rather than injecting the service through options. This also lets the driver provide the host through its layer instead of passing it manually.

Posted via Macroscope — Effect Service Conventions

Deferred on purpose, same as on #17345: this refactor keeps the existing argument-passing shape so the layers can merge quickly. A follow-up after the stack lands will make every adapter factory yield* ProviderHost and its other services.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This is an architectural Cursor provider extraction that rewires production registrations and introduces a shared credential-storage boundary around authentication-sensitive code. It also broadens Knip's ignored dependency diagnostics, so the runtime and static-analysis changes warrant human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a standalone Cursor provider package with client settings and server exports. It adds credential operations to ProviderHost, moves Cursor server code to use that host interface, and updates mobile, web, and server integrations to import Cursor functionality from the new package.

Changes

Cursor Provider Package and Host Integration

Layer / File(s)Summary
Provider host credential service
packages/provider-core/src/server/ProviderHost.ts, packages/provider-core/src/server/errors.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderHostLive.ts, packages/provider-testing/src/host.ts, apps/server/src/provider/*test.ts, packages/provider-core/src/server/managedProvider.test.ts, docs/internals/adding-a-provider.md
ProviderHost now provides effectful credential operations. The server implementation uses credential, secret-store, and crypto services. The test host stores credentials in memory, and related test layers provide required services. The provider guidance now includes stored credentials among ProviderHost resources.
Cursor package and settings
packages/provider-cursor/*, packages/contracts/src/settings.ts
The new package defines Cursor settings and client metadata, and exports server and testing entry points. CursorSettings is removed from the contracts package. Cursor server modules and tests use package-local modules and the provider host.
Application and tooling integration
apps/mobile/*, apps/web/*, apps/server/package.json, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/*, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderInstanceRegistry.test.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderOrchestrationAdapterInfrastructure.ts, apps/server/src/provider/builtInDrivers.ts, apps/server/src/usage/cursorUsageReader*, package.json, knip.jsonc, scripts/lib/cursor-sdk-packaging.test.ts, scripts/release-smoke.ts
Mobile, web, and server integrations import Cursor functionality from provider-cursor. Mobile and web remove dedicated Cursor icon mappings. Workspace checks and release fixtures include the package.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d9afd

This change moves Cursor into its own package without altering its behavior. I found no concrete merge-blocking risk.

Keep credential-store acquisition failures typed.

If Crypto.Crypto.digest fails, ProviderCredentialStore.make converts that failure to a defect with Effect.orDie. ProviderHostLive.credentials maps only get, set, and remove failures. Therefore, CursorDriver.create cannot convert an acquisition defect into ProviderDriverError, and provider reconciliation can abort instead of producing the intended unavailable snapshot.

Expose acquisition as a typed credential error and remove Effect.orDie from the acquisition path.

Not changing this. The orDie covers crypto.digest failing to SHA-256 a short string, which only happens when the runtime's crypto is broken. That's a defect, not a recoverable credential state, so turning it into an unavailable snapshot would hide it. The get/set/remove paths, which can really fail (disk, permissions), stay typed.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for clarifying the error boundary. A runtime crypto failure belongs in the defect channel, not an unavailable snapshot. The recoverable get/set/remove failures remain typed. I withdraw this finding.

5Learning: In the TypeScript Effect service apps/server/src/provider/ProviderCredentialStore.ts, ProviderCredentialStore.make deliberately uses Effect.orDie for crypto.digest("SHA-256", ...) on a short binding string. A digest failure indicates broken runtime crypto and must remain a defect, rather than become a recoverable credential error or an unavailable provider snapshot. apps/server/src/provider/ProviderHostLive.ts keeps recoverable credential get/set/remove failures in the typed ProviderCredentialError channel.

Record the credential binding and require the underlying cause.

Every current construction wraps a credential-store failure. Make cause required and add bindingKey using the hashed store.binding.key. This key is bounded and does not expose credential data.

Apply the same bindingKey field to the set and remove constructions.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Made cause required. Not adding bindingKey: the error is raised inside credentials(namespace, bindingId) for one store, so the key adds no information at that boundary, and no caller branches on it.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the clarification. cause is now required. I withdraw the bindingKey recommendation: the credential boundary already identifies the store, and no caller needs the key for control flow.

5Learning: In the TypeScript Effect provider credential API, ProviderCredentialError in packages/provider-core/src/server/errors.ts is raised by operations on a single store obtained through ProviderHost.credentials(namespace, bindingId). Do not require a bindingKey field solely to repeat that store identity when the boundary already supplies the context and no caller branches on the key.
