Stacked on #30474. That PR moved JWT work to effect/jose; this one moves the remaining node:crypto call sites where Effect 4.1's crypto modules fit. Many of those call sites carried a nodeBuiltinImport:off suppression saying "Effect's Crypto has no createHmac / timingSafeEqual / generateKeyPairSync / createPublicKey", which is no longer true.

What moved

  • HMAC signing and verification now use Mac. Each service yields Mac once at construction; the server and desktop already provide it through NodeCrypto.layer, and the relay worker adds Mac.layerWebCrypto.
    • Server signed tokens: session, WebSocket, asset, attachment-upload, guest-share and MCP OAuth tokens. signPayload becomes an Effect. The new verifyPayloadSignature uses Mac.verify instead of re-signing and comparing strings.
    • Scheduled-task webhooks: signatures are decoded and checked with Mac.verify. The webhook token compare keeps its hash-then-compare shape, now with Digest and Mac.timingSafeEqual.
    • Relay APNs delivery jobs: signApnsDeliveryJob and verifySignedApnsDeliveryJob are Effects. Verification fails with the typed error instead of returning it.
    • Secret request refs and the desktop bootstrap token.
  • Keys now use Jwk.
    • The environment's Ed25519 signing key comes from Jwk.generateKeyPair and is stored as PEM, which I checked Node reads and verifies with.
    • The cloud mint-key check uses Jwk.importSpki(…, "EdDSA"), which rejects non-Ed25519 keys as before.
  • Codex PKCE uses SecureRandom and Digest. state, nonce, the verifier and the code challenge are generated in Effect, so CodexChatGptAuth no longer imports node:crypto.
  • Constant-time compares use Mac.timingSafeEqual. It is a pure, sync function, so the remaining Buffer + timingSafeEqual helpers move without becoming effectful.

Compatibility

The derivations are byte-identical to before, so nothing already issued is invalidated:

  • Secret refs still use the salt's hex text as the HMAC key. I checked this against Node's output.
  • Desktop bootstrap token: a test asserts the token still equals Node's HMAC, because older desktops still compute it with node:crypto.
  • Session, asset and invite signatures are still unpadded base64url HMAC-SHA256.

Left on node:crypto on purpose

  • Sync hashing inside plain functions: cookie names, the terminal history path, relay client config, and attachment and agent-scope IDs. Digest is async, so converting would make these helpers effectful for nothing.
  • Streaming file hashes in the Codex and Antigravity installers: Digest has no incremental API.
  • The relay's APNs JWT needs deterministic RFC 6979 ECDSA, so isolates mint identical tokens. WebCrypto ECDSA is randomized.
  • The desktop Chromium cookie import depends on Chromium's exact PBKDF2 and AES parameters.
  • Bare randomUUID() in non-Effect desktop code.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed passes. The two test failures it found first were tests building legacy tokens with a sync signPayload inside a template string; both now yield it.
  • Server tests across auth, assets, guest, secrets, scheduledTasks, attachment MCP tools, cloud and Codex auth: 587/587. Relay agentActivity: 102/102.

Walkthrough

The pull request replaces Node crypto operations with Effect crypto services across desktop, shared, server, and relay code. Token signing and verification, webhook checks, key handling, and OAuth value generation now use Effectful APIs. Callers and tests provide the required services and evaluate the resulting Effects.

Add a compatibility assertion for existing secret references.

The service tests create and read references with the same derivation. They could pass if a later change used the raw salt instead of its hex text. Add one test with a fixed stored salt and a reference calculated by the previous Node HMAC derivation. This protects savedRef and saveToFile for values saved before an upgrade. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per coding guidelines, “Backend behavior changes ship with focused tests for that behavior.”

Cover the missing cloud mint key cases.

validateCloudMintPublicKey converts literal \n sequences to newlines, so valid escaped-newline PEM must be accepted. Existing lifecycle coverage already tests valid Ed25519 SPKI PEM with real newlines; do not duplicate that case.

Extend the existing applyRelayConfig coverage with:

  • valid Ed25519 SPKI PEM containing literal \n escapes, accepted;
  • malformed PEM, rejected;
  • valid non-Ed25519 SPKI, rejected.

These cases cover the changed normalization and rejection behavior.

Both new Effect.fnUntraced uses (deriveToken and isValidDesktopBootstrapToken) lack the required nearby reason. Please document why these operations deliberately omit spans, or use named Effect.fn boundaries where tracing is appropriate.

Posted via Macroscope — Effect Service Conventions

Fixed in 7faf852. currentDesktopBootstrapToken and isValidDesktopBootstrapToken are now named Effect.fns (desktopBootstrapToken.current and desktopBootstrapToken.isValid). deriveToken stays Effect.fnUntraced, with a comment: it is an inner step those two spans already cover, and validation runs it up to three times.

I can’t verify the fix yet: the branch snapshot I inspected is at af078ff and still has the original untraced functions.

The push reached GitHub after your check. The head is now 7faf852: packages/shared/src/desktopBootstrapToken.ts has Effect.fn("desktopBootstrapToken.current"), Effect.fn("desktopBootstrapToken.isValid"), and a one-line reason above the remaining Effect.fnUntraced (deriveToken).

Synced from GitHub

Effect Service Conventions found one issue: the new untraced bootstrap-token helpers need a nearby explanation or named tracing boundaries. See the inline review comment in packages/shared/src/desktopBootstrapToken.ts.
