Problem

A remote web client viewing a browser preview stays on "Connecting..." forever, with the URL field disabled, when the tab's renderer stops answering. Reproduced on main (6575ce3250) with the built Linux desktop app as the host (Xvfb) and a separate web client holding the desktop as a remote environment. A desktop-rendered tab whose page busy-loops its main thread never lets a fresh viewer connect: /api/preview-stream/ws never upgrades. ServerBrowserStream runs ServerBrowser.attachViewer before the upgrade, and attachViewer awaited startScreencast(1) and then the initial still, with no deadline. Timing probes showed it stuck in startScreencast (Page.stopScreencast/Page.startScreencast never answer). The control message was already queued but never delivered.

Change

attachViewer now starts the screencast and pushes the initial still in a fiber forked into the viewer's scope, instead of awaiting them. The viewer returns as soon as it is registered, so the socket upgrades and the client receives its control state whatever the renderer does. The fork is interrupted when the viewer detaches. The order (screencast, then a still only if no live frame beat it) is unchanged.

The capture-lock hold of a still that never answers is out of scope; open PR #25381 bounds it. That PR alone does not fix this hang: with it merged, the same reproduction still stays on "Connecting...".

Scope and approval

Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#27610

Triaged via the automated issue flow; GitCafe issue #27610.

Verification

  • New test a viewer attaches to a tab whose renderer never answers the screencast (apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts) fails on main with attachViewer never returned while the renderer was unresponsive and passes with the fix. The read-only viewer test now waits for its first frame, which arrives after attachViewer returns. ServerBrowser.test.ts and ServerBrowserStream.test.ts pass (42/42); vp run check:changed passes.
  • Runtime transcripts. Built Linux desktop app (Electron 44, Xvfb) as the host; a separate standalone server's web client with the desktop added as a remote environment (wsTicket auth); Chromium 148 headless, 1440Γ—900, DPR 1, dark. Fresh databases created by each side's own build; same driver on both sides. Times are relative to the preview-stream WebSocket request.

What else changed: on stalled tabs the Release control button appears (control is held) while the canvas stays blank, because the renderer never paints. No recovery of the page itself is claimed. On the healthy page the browser panel is pixel-identical between sides.

Not checked:

  • cannot-verify wayland: the reporter's host appears to be an Omarchy (Hyprland/Wayland) session. Why their renderer stops answering there was not reproduced. Every faithful X11 attempt (plain tab, hidden desktop window, remote environment) connected normally; the stall was induced with a page that busy-loops.
  • Screenshots and recordings were taken locally but not uploaded: the evidence uploader was not configured on the machine that ran them.
  • Mobile clients: they gate "Connecting to browser..." on the first painted frame, so with a permanently stalled renderer their visible state does not change with this fix.
  • Headless (non-desktop) tabs and the floating/PiP surfaces share this code path but were not captured.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 61b6910

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable β€” Preview viewers can connect without waiting for a stalled renderer to initialize its screencast. The change preserves existing permissions and capture settings while keeping initialization scoped to the viewer connection.

Explanation

Direct issue #27610 requires a usable remote preview connection with control state. The change in apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts forks screencast startup and the initial still instead of awaiting renderer responses before viewer registration. The viewer can therefore complete attachment and emit control state when the renderer does not answer. The new ServerBrowser.test.ts test covers this stalled-renderer case and verifies that attachment returns and emits control output. The reported Wayland cause, mobile first-frame behavior, and page recovery are not coding requirements established by #27610.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The pull request changes only viewer attachment behavior and related tests. The test updates model stalled CDP methods and preserve the read-only viewer assertion. These changes directly support issue #27610. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated files are changed.

Bound the viewer cleanup wait before detaching the CDP session.

When a viewer disconnects while the renderer remains stalled, Page.stopScreencast can remain pending. The finalizer waits for that promise before it calls session.detach(), so the viewer scope can remain open and each reconnect can leave another session pending.

Use a bounded cleanup wait or detach the session independently of the stop response. Add a regression test that closes the viewer while Page.stopScreencast remains stalled. The current test resolves the renderer before viewer cleanup, so it does not cover this path.
