While a reply streamed, every visible timeline row re-rendered on each update, not just the streaming one.

ConversationTimeline built its pending-approvals map before several hook calls and captured it in the shared row context after them. The React Compiler cannot memoize a value whose mutable range spans a hook call, so the row context got a new identity on every render and all 16 list containers and their rows re-rendered. The map is now built from props right before the row context, so the compiler memoizes it.

The stream render scenario now asserts that history rows do not re-render while a reply streams (210 renders on main, 0 here).

Benchmark

Measured with the PandaCode vs T3 Code streaming bench (W1: a 50 KB Markdown reply delivered as 500 whole-text updates over 32 s, production build, headless Chromium on cups, median of 3 runs). Each row adds one layer of this stack:

T3 buildMain-thread taskScriptWorst delivery lateness
main21.0 s14.8 s73 ms
+ timeline rows (this stack, 1)19.3 s13.0 s26 ms
+ Markdown blocks (2)12.1 s4.4 s10 ms
+ git actions panel (3)10.4 s3.4 s9 ms
+ streamed text bypasses the timeline (4)9.5 s2.6 s9 ms
PandaCode, same machine6.6 s0.5 s2 ms

The bench delivers an update every 64 ms. In the app the default paragraph streaming mode sends at most one every 400 ms, so real streams hit these paths less often, but each update costs what it does here.

Implemented by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 739c65d

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This refactor lets shared timeline row context stay memoized during streamed replies while retaining pending-approval filtering and display. Its effects are limited to client rendering, with no material change to permissions, data handling or product defaults.

Walkthrough

The timeline now tracks visible pending approvals as an array, excludes approvals represented by work and live-work rows, and renders the remaining approvals in the footer. The streaming scenario also checks that history user rows do not render and assistant rows render once per stream delta.

The timeline derives unmatched visible approvals by comparing request IDs with work and live-work rows, then renders the remaining approvals in the footer. It builds the shared approval map after the hooks. The streaming scenario checks user and assistant row render counts.

The change is production-safe, but historical render comparisons cannot include baselines that fail the new regression assertions until the runner or test-project layout is adjusted.

Make the render comparison tolerate regressed baselines.

scripts/render-metrics.ts runs the whole renders project. runOnce throws when the Vitest process exits non-zero, before it reads any scenario report. A failing assertion in app-stream-assistant-turn therefore stops the run command and produces no comparison data. The copied harness on a revision with the history-row regression can fail these assertions, so the comparison workflow cannot capture that baseline.

A separate regression test does not fix this if it stays in the renders project, because the runner executes that whole project and still exits non-zero. The test must run in a different Vitest project, or the runner must handle these failures without dropping the other scenarios. Either change needs a deliberate design decision, and no safe localized patch is established by the inspected code.
