Every streamed update re-parsed the whole reply and re-rendered every element in it (links with their tooltips, list items, code), so a long reply got more expensive with each delta.

While a reply streams, ChatMarkdown now splits it at blank lines that close every open block and renders each block through its own memoized react-markdown. Finished blocks keep their render; only the last one re-parses. Text with syntax that ties blocks together (reference definitions, footnotes, raw HTML, ::: directives, $$ math) still renders whole, and so does the finished reply, whose first block React reuses. A test renders every prefix of each sample both ways and compares the HTML.

The renderer context also rebuilt its file-link maps from the full text on every update, which re-rendered every block's links. They are now keyed by the file links found, so streamed text that adds none keeps them stable.

The stream render scenario now asserts one paragraph render per delta (465 on main, 30 here).

Benchmark

Measured with the PandaCode vs T3 Code streaming bench (W1: a 50 KB Markdown reply delivered as 500 whole-text updates over 32 s, production build, headless Chromium on cups, median of 3 runs). Each row adds one layer of this stack:

T3 buildMain-thread taskScriptWorst delivery lateness
main21.0 s14.8 s73 ms
+ timeline rows (this stack, 1)19.3 s13.0 s26 ms
+ Markdown blocks (2)12.1 s4.4 s10 ms
+ git actions panel (3)10.4 s3.4 s9 ms
+ streamed text bypasses the timeline (4)9.5 s2.6 s9 ms
PandaCode, same machine6.6 s0.5 s2 ms

The bench delivers an update every 64 ms. In the app the default paragraph streaming mode sends at most one every 400 ms, so real streams hit these paths less often, but each update costs what it does here.

Implemented by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This optimizes streaming replies by rendering Markdown blocks independently. It also adds a lint suppression requiring human review; the supplied Medium findings identify temporary heading-anchor and reference-link regressions during streaming.

Walkthrough

ChatMarkdown now resolves file-link metadata from keyed sources and can render eligible streaming Markdown as separate blocks. New tests check block splitting, source reconstruction, and rendered output across text prefixes.

Explanation

The title "perf(web): streaming replies re-render only their last Markdown block" is a conventional commit title that matches the main change. The PR splits streamed Markdown at blank lines and renders each block separately, so finished blocks keep their render and only the last block re-parses. The title names the web scope, the streaming context, and the performance goal. It also omits the file-link map stabilization, which is a secondary part of the change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template structure. It has a Problem section that explains that each streamed update re-parsed and re-rendered the whole reply. It has a Change section that explains block splitting, memoized rendering, the fallback cases, and the file-link map change. It includes a Verification section with a prefix-by-prefix HTML comparison test, a render-count assertion (465 to 30), and a benchmark table. The Scope and approval section is missing. The description does not link a triaged bug issue or maintainer discussion, and it does not explain why the change qualifies without one. The description also does not include before/after screenshots, though this is a performance change without visible UI change, so screenshots may not apply.

Resolution

Add a Scope and approval section. Link the triaged bug issue or the discussion that has explicit maintainer approval of the direction and scope, including the approval comment. If no prior issue exists, explain why this change qualifies as a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug. Also state whether screenshots apply, because the change has no visible UI effect. The benchmark numbers come from an external repository and a single machine. State that the numbers are not independently verified, or add a reproduction command for the benchmark.

Keep escaped-bracket reference definitions in one source.

If the text is [foo][ref\]]\n\n[ref\]]: /uri, this pattern misses the valid definition. splitMarkdownBlocks separates it from the reference, so the link renders as text until streaming ends. Detect escaped brackets in reference labels, or conservatively keep this text whole. (spec.commonmark.org)

Preserve unique heading IDs across streaming blocks.

If a reply contains # Intro\n\ntext\n\n# Intro, each MarkdownSource runs rehypeHeadingIds with a new ID set. Both headings receive user-content-intro while the reply streams. A link to #intro-1 cannot reach the second heading. Keep headings that need shared ID assignment in one source, or make ID assignment aware of the full reply. Add this case to the rendering comparison. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
