Problem

The server's memory grows by about 25 MB a minute (about 1.7 GB an hour) until the heap limit is hit and the server stops answering. Reported in #25172.

The pull request sync runs a sweep every minute. Each sweep builds a map of every thread's linked pull requests (groups) and reads pull requests through PullRequestReadCache. Finished sweeps are never freed. On a server with 950 threads that have links (18,736 links, 4,035 distinct pull requests), a heap snapshot taken after about 3 hours (nightly 3669) held 215 old groups maps and 2.8 million link-snapshot objects. Counts taken 11.7 and 31.8 minutes after a restart were 11 and 29 maps.

Change

PullRequestReadCache is built on Effect's Cache. Each cache entry keeps the fiber that filled it, and a forked fiber copies its caller's CurrentStackFrame. The sync sweep creates its syncGroup, syncEntry and readGroup functions per sweep, closing over that sweep's groups, so the stored stack frames keep the whole sweep alive. Most pull requests are merged or quiet and are read rarely, so the 512-entry cache holds entries from hundreds of old sweeps.

get and invalidate now run through the existing detachStackFrame helper, the same one GitManager.getPrLookup already uses for this reason. The change is 7 lines in PullRequestReadCache.ts plus a regression test.

Scope and approval

Fixes #25172, which I filed with the heap-snapshot evidence. It has not been triaged yet. I'm opening the fix alongside it because the change is small and focused: a 7-line change that applies an existing helper to the one cache that was missing it, in one file, with no behavior change beyond freeing memory sooner. Happy to hold it until the issue is triaged if you prefer.

Verification

  • New test in PullRequestReadCache.test.ts runs five sweeps shaped like the real one (a per-run Effect.fn closing over a 1,000-entry map, calling invalidate and get), forces garbage collection and checks that none of the maps is still reachable. It fails without the change (maps stay alive) and passes with it. vp test run src/pullRequest/PullRequestReadCache.test.ts: 8 of 8 pass.
  • A standalone script and a model of the reactor with sparse reads showed the same retention before the change and none after.
  • vp lint on apps/server/src/pullRequest reports no errors (one existing warning in PullRequestService.test.ts); vp fmt --check passes.
  • On a real server (950 threads with links, 4,035 distinct pull requests, 20 GB database), a heap snapshot about 10 minutes after a restart held 11 retained sweep maps and was 505 MB without the change. With the change it held 1 (the sweep in progress) and was 420 MB. Without the change the count reached 29 at 32 minutes and 215 after about 3 hours on the previous nightly (3669). The patched build is the release tag v0.1.3-nightly.20261025.3692 plus this commit.
  • Not checked: how the patched server behaves over several hours (only the first 10 minutes were snapshotted). Other things the first heap snapshot showed (delayed-effect batch pools, error objects) are not addressed here. tsc --noEmit in this checkout reports errors only in files I did not touch (missing modules in this install).

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at e0a3936

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped server memory-retention bug fix that applies an existing stack-frame detachment helper to pull-request cache operations. It preserves cache behavior while preventing completed sync sweeps from being retained, with a focused regression test covering the scenario.

Walkthrough

PullRequestReadCache.get and invalidate now detach stack frames. A new test performs reads and invalidations, then forces garbage collection and checks that captured data is no longer reachable.

Changes: Pull request cache frame detachment

Layer / File(s)Summary
Detach cache frames and validate collection
apps/server/src/pullRequest/PullRequestReadCache.ts, apps/server/src/pullRequest/PullRequestReadCache.test.ts
The get and invalidate Effect declarations use detachStackFrame. The test performs reads and invalidations for two PR scopes, then checks whether recorded WeakRef targets have been collected.

The RSS footprint (resident memory set) gets bigger because it continuously touches all heap pages and that makes them less likely to get swapped out by the operating system.

Enable GC before the test worker starts.

This test changes a V8 flag after Node has started. Node documents that this may do nothing. If gc is unavailable, NodeVM.runInNewContext("gc") throws during module initialization at line 14, so the test file cannot run. Configure --expose-gc in the test worker startup options instead.

@coderabbitai on the --expose-gc note: the test depends on v8.setFlagsFromString("--expose-gc") taking effect after startup, which Node documents as not guaranteed. It does take effect on the Node versions this repo runs: the test passes locally and on all 8 server test shards in CI. If a future Node stopped honoring it, the failure would be loud (runInNewContext("gc") throws when the file loads), not a silent pass. Moving the flag to the server's test startup options would change shared test configuration for every server test, which is a larger change than this 7-line fix, so I'm leaving it as is. Happy to move it if a maintainer prefers.

@bompus Understood. Given your reported results on the supported Node versions and all 8 CI shards, keeping the test-local setup is reasonable. If gc becomes unavailable, the file-load failure will prevent a silent pass.

I withdraw the request to move --expose-gc into shared test startup options. The documented portability caveat does not establish a current test defect.

5Learning: The repository test suite is Node-only: `.github/workflows/ci.yml` configures Node from the root `package.json` and runs `vp run test`. Node-specific test scaffolding is valid in `apps/server/src/persistence/Layers/Sqlite.test.ts`; this includes the `lockHolderSource` child process that uses `node:sqlite`. The production SQLite layer still supports Node and Bun through shared setup, but tests do not run under Bun.

Thanks @bompus for the diagnosis, heap evidence, focused fix and regression test. Continued in #25285 on origin because this contribution is on a fork. Your commit is preserved; main was merged, the GC handoff was simplified, and the invariant comment shortened. I compared the full original diff: both detachStackFrame applications and the regression are retained. Two independent reviews returned MERGE, and the server proof audit was sufficient with the remaining SQLite prepare-cache retention documented. Closing this submission in favor of the linked replacement.
