Problem

The server's memory grows by about 25 MB a minute (about 1.7 GB an hour) until the heap limit is hit and the server stops answering. Reported in #25172.

The pull request sync runs a sweep every minute. Each sweep builds a map of every thread's linked pull requests (groups) and reads pull requests through PullRequestReadCache. Finished sweeps are never freed. On a server with 950 threads that have links (18,736 links, 4,035 distinct pull requests), a heap snapshot taken after about 3 hours (nightly 3669) held 215 old groups maps and 2.8 million link-snapshot objects. Counts taken 11.7 and 31.8 minutes after a restart were 11 and 29 maps.

Change

PullRequestReadCache is built on Effect's Cache. Each cache entry keeps the fiber that filled it, and a forked fiber copies its caller's CurrentStackFrame. The sync sweep creates its syncGroup, syncEntry and readGroup functions per sweep, closing over that sweep's groups, so the stored stack frames keep the whole sweep alive. Most pull requests are merged or quiet and are read rarely, so the 512-entry cache holds entries from hundreds of old sweeps.

get and invalidate now run through the existing detachStackFrame helper, the same one GitManager.getPrLookup already uses for this reason. The change is 7 lines in PullRequestReadCache.ts plus a regression test.

Scope and approval

Fixes #25172, which I filed with the heap-snapshot evidence. It has not been triaged yet. I'm opening the fix alongside it because the change is small and focused: a 7-line change that applies an existing helper to the one cache that was missing it, in one file, with no behavior change beyond freeing memory sooner. Happy to hold it until the issue is triaged if you prefer.

Verification

 • New test in PullRequestReadCache.test.ts runs five sweeps shaped like the real one (a per-run Effect.fn closing over a 1,000-entry map, calling invalidate and get), forces garbage collection and checks that none of the maps is still reachable. It fails without the change (maps stay alive) and passes with it. vp test run src/pullRequest/PullRequestReadCache.test.ts: 8 of 8 pass.
 • A standalone script and a model of the reactor with sparse reads showed the same retention before the change and none after.
 • vp lint on apps/server/src/pullRequest reports no errors (one existing warning in PullRequestService.test.ts); vp fmt --check passes.
 • On a real server (950 threads with links, 4,035 distinct pull requests, 20 GB database), a heap snapshot about 10 minutes after a restart held 11 retained sweep maps and was 505 MB without the change. With the change it held 1 (the sweep in progress) and was 420 MB. Without the change the count reached 29 at 32 minutes and 215 after about 3 hours on the previous nightly (3669). The patched build is the release tag v0.1.3-nightly.20261025.3692 plus this commit.
 • Not checked: how the patched server behaves over several hours (only the first 10 minutes were snapshotted). Other things the first heap snapshot showed (delayed-effect batch pools, error objects) are not addressed here. tsc --noEmit in this checkout reports errors only in files I did not touch (missing modules in this install).

Takeover

Credit to @bompus for the diagnosis, heap evidence, implementation and regression in #25267. Their commit is preserved on this origin branch because the contribution came from a fork. Main was merged; the takeover reduced the test to one GC job-boundary handoff and shortened the invariant comment. Both cache boundaries retain the author's existing-helper approach.

Evidence

Final head: db9255bfac; merged base: 0a3b561bc0. Evidence was captured at daf6e30653 against f88b33a16d; the final merge changes no server code or dependency lockfile, and the complete PR diff is byte-identical (SHA-256 1024384827fbf170e882b229caa1bc489963cec90093ff4539ab71fa71c64f8a). All 8 scoped tests pass again at final head. Full fixture matrix.

Runtime environment: Linux, Node 26.12.1, fresh isolated home with seeding disabled; deterministic synthetic forge transport, real reactor/service/SQLite/filesystem cache. Five summaries, five null-stack reads, five invalidations and ten cache gets completed. All ten request keys remained resident; maps from subsequent four requested sweeps were collected. One first-sweep map remains through a SQLite prepare-cache retaining path. This is qualified short-run evidence, not a claim of zero retention throughout the server.

Verification log
 • Tests: 7 baseline → 8 total in PullRequestReadCache.test.ts; one regression retained. Base and each single-boundary variant fail; both detachments pass.
 • Independent review round 1: GPT-6.1 Sol MERGE; Claude Opus 5.5 MERGE; no concrete findings. Review and check log.
 • check:changed passed format, lint, knip, GraphQL, affected-package typechecks and 8/8 scoped tests. No repo-wide check run.
 • CodeRabbit GC-startup concern did not reproduce on tested supported Node 22/24/26 main and worker threads; no speculative config change.
 • Proof audit pass 2: SUFFICIENT, all 7 matrix rows covered; independent runtime reproduction reproduced 0/1/1/1, zero active sweeps and resident request keys. Absolute-zero server retention is not claimed.
 • Final main-merge gate: scoped 8/8 tests and check:changed pass again at final head. CI: 12 successful, 1 pending, 0 failing at last read; dispatcher owns monitoring. No merge performed.
 • Blockers: none confirmed in code review.
 • Unverified: no changed UI surfaces need captures. Live forge/auth, non-null stacks, other mutation/refresh entry points, client/remote E2E, multi-hour stability, capacity, pruning and absence of other retention paths were not established. The observed SQLite retention is outside this patch.
 • Models/harness: Claude Opus 5.5 / Claude harness (tests, implementation, review B); GPT-6.1 Sol / Codex harness (lead, review A, evidence and proof audits).

Walkthrough

PullRequestReadCache now detaches stack frames in its get and invalidate effects. A new garbage-collection test checks whether data captured during cache operations becomes unreachable.

The cache fix has a regression test, but that test could fail to load on a supported runtime that does not honor the late GC flag. Resolve that portability risk before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue [#25172] requires that each one-minute sync sweep's groups map and its data become garbage after the sweep, so memory does not grow by one retained copy per minute. The reviewed head implements the cache boundary of the path that the issue's steps attribute to readCache. In PullRequestReadCache.ts, get and invalidate now run through the existing detachStackFrame helper (apps/server/src/git/detachStackFrame.ts). That helper materializes the caller's stack frame, so a cache entry's filling fiber no longer keeps the sweep closure alive. The regression test does not keep a caller's data alive after its reads and invalidations in PullRequestReadCache.test.ts runs five sweeps. Each sweep uses a per-run Effect.fn that closes over a 1,000-entry map. It forces GC and asserts that no WeakRef target remains. I did not run the tests. The PR reports that the test fails without the change (5 maps retained) and passes with it (8/8). The PR's short runtime evidence shows 1 retained map after sweeps 1, 3 and 5, so retention stays bounded and does not add one map per sweep. Limits: the issue also lists a delayed-effect batch pool path and an Error callError path. This change does not touch those paths. The PR also reports a SQLite prepare-cache path that keeps one first-sweep map alive in a short run. Multi-hour behavior and live forge behavior are not established. These limits are not covered by this assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed whole-PR diff (merge base 0a3b561bc0 to head db9255bfac) changes two files. apps/server/src/pullRequest/PullRequestReadCache.ts adds the detachStackFrame import, passes detachStackFrame as the second argument to the get and invalidate Effect.fn wrappers, and adds a comment on cache entries retaining their filling fiber. All three edits serve the retention fix in [#25172]. apps/server/src/pullRequest/PullRequestReadCache.test.ts adds node:v8 and node:vm imports, enables --expose-gc, obtains gc, and adds the regression test. This test supports the same objective. The diff shows no unrelated server, client, contract, or dependency change. The PR summary lists only these two files, but the repository file list was truncated, so I did not independently confirm the absence of other changed files beyond the stated summary.

175# V8#
176
177 Stability: 2 - Stable
178
179This module exposes events and interfaces specific to the version of V8 built with Node.js. These interfaces are subject to change by upstream and are therefore not covered under the stability index.

181## getHeapStatistics()#
182
183Added in: v1.0.0
184
185Returns an object with the following properties
186
187 `{
188 total_heap_size: 7326976,
189 total_heap_size_executable: 4194304,
190 total_physical_size: 7326976,
191 total_available_size: 1152656,
192 used_heap_size: 3476208,
193 heap_size_limit: 1535115264
194 }
195 `
196
197## setFlagsFromString(string)#
198
199Added in: v1.0.0
200
201Set additional V8 command line flags. Use with care; changing settings after the VM has started may result in unpredictable behavior, including crashes and data loss. Or it may simply do nothing.
202
203The V8 options available for a version of Node.js may be determined by running `node --v8-options`. An unofficial, community-maintained list of options and their effects is available here.
204
205Usage:
206
207 `// Print GC events to stdout for one minute.
208 const v8 = require('v8');
209 v8.setFlagsFromString('--trace_gc');
210 setTimeout(function() { v8.setFlagsFromString('--notrace_gc'); }, 60e3);

Expose gc before the test worker starts.

NodeV8.setFlagsFromString("--expose-gc") runs after V8 starts, and Node documents that such changes may do nothing. If gc remains unavailable, NodeVM.runInNewContext("gc") throws during module loading and the test cannot run. Configure --expose-gc at test-worker startup.

7around lines 13 - 14:
8Configure the test worker to start with `--expose-gc` rather than calling
9`NodeV8.setFlagsFromString` after startup. Update the `collectGarbage`
10initialization to use the exposed `gc` only after startup configuration is in
11place, avoiding a module-load failure when `gc` is unavailable.
