Problem

Claude text generation discarded the instance’s --settings launch argument. Configuring a per-instance Vertex project and generating a thread title still launched Claude with only T3’s own settings, so titles and other generated text used the global configuration.

Change

Read only --settings from the configured launch arguments, decode inline JSON or a settings file relative to the request’s working directory, and merge it beneath T3’s text-generation settings. Relative files resolve before title generation switches to a temporary directory. Invalid settings produce a text-generation error.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/25017

GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/25017

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. The change is limited to Claude’s shared text-generation runner and its regression tests.

Verification

  • Tests first: inline JSON and relative-file cases failed on main with the configured project marker absent; the existing 15 tests passed.
  • Final focused suite: vp test run src/textGeneration/ClaudeTextGeneration.test.ts — 19 passed.
  • Final vp run check:changed — all checks passed, including format, lint, knip, GraphQL generation, affected typechecks, and focused tests.
  • Real dev app on Linux with Claude Code 2.1.303 / Claude Opus 5.5: before, the marker was absent from the actual subprocess argv; after, inline and relative-file markers reached the single settings payload and titles succeeded. File settings with disableAllHooks:false became true. The title subprocess ran in a temporary directory distinct from the request cwd.
  • Server-only change; visual fixture matrix is empty. Tests cover fast-mode precedence; it was not separately exercised in the runtime transcript. Web, desktop, mobile, and remote callers share this server path; no client or wire changes.
  • Runtime evidence was captured at bd4851187a; the final main merge leaves all three changed text-generation files identical.

🟠 High textGeneration/ClaudeTextGeneration.ts:210

Selecting fastMode: false still sends fastMode: true when the launch settings enable it, so the request runs in fast mode despite the explicit normal-mode selection. The conditional only emits an override for true; emit the selected value whenever it is a boolean, as thinking does.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused server bug fix that makes an already-configured Claude --settings argument apply to text-generation requests, with inline, file-based, and validation tests while preserving existing defaults. A separate unresolved High finding flags that an explicit fastMode:false selection can still be overridden by launch settings.

Walkthrough

Claude text generation now reads --settings launch arguments as inline JSON or as a file relative to the request working directory. It merges those settings with T3 settings, which take precedence for duplicate keys. Tests cover successful merges and invalid arguments.

Changes: Claude text-generation settings

Layer / File(s)Summary
Read and merge launch settings
apps/server/src/textGeneration/ClaudeTextGeneration.ts
The text-generation path reads inline JSON or a settings file relative to the request working directory. Read and decode failures become TextGenerationError errors. Existing T3 settings override duplicate launch settings.
Validate settings behavior
apps/server/src/textGeneration/ClaudeTextGeneration.test.ts, apps/server/src/textGeneration/testing/ClaudeTextGeneration.fixture.mjs
The fake CLI can check expected --settings values. Tests cover inline JSON, a cwd-relative settings file, T3 setting precedence, malformed JSON, and a missing argument value.

Explicitly disabling fast mode may not take effect when launch settings enable it, and a failed settings-file read may expose its configured path in an error. These bounded issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes all required sections. It explains the problem, implementation, scope and issue reference, focused verification results, runtime checks, limitations, and the agent model and harness used.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes satisfy the coding requirements in #25017. ClaudeTextGeneration.ts reads only the parsed --settings launch value, accepts inline JSON or a file relative to the request cwd, and reads it before title generation creates its temporary directory. The launch settings are merged below T3 settings, so disableAllHooks, selected thinking, fast mode, and ultracode values retain the existing precedence. Read and decode failures return TextGenerationError. The regression tests cover inline JSON, request-CWD-relative files, precedence, malformed JSON, and a missing value.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #25017. The production change is limited to the shared Claude text-generation runner. The test helper and fixture changes validate the generated --settings payload and support the new regression cases. No unrelated client, wire, provider, or feature changes are present.

Preserve an explicit fastMode: false selection.

getProviderOptionDescriptors preserves selected boolean values, including false. The current truthy check ignores that selection and retains launch fastMode: true. Use a type check so an explicit false overrides launch settings while no T3 selection leaves the launch value unchanged.

Keep the settings path out of the error detail.

If the file read fails, filePath copies an unbounded launch-argument value into TextGenerationError.detail and its user-facing message. The path can contain sensitive text. Use a fixed detail and retain the read failure in cause. As per coding guidelines, “Attributes and log annotations stay bounded: no raw payloads, command arguments or output, signed URLs, credentials, query strings, or arbitrary defect text.” As per path instructions, service errors use “structured, bounded attributes.”
