Problem

Fork a Claude conversation from a completed response and send /compact as the fork's first message. The server rejects it with “Cannot compact an empty thread” even though the fork inherits the source conversation.

Change

Both SQLite and in-memory projections recognize inherited conversation in run forks. Native forks qualify through their provider history; portable forks qualify when their resolved handoff contains historical messages. Empty portable handoffs and ordinary empty threads retain the existing rejection.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24160

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow: #24160.

Verification

  • From apps/server: vp test run src/orchestration-v2/TurnStartReads.test.ts src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.test.ts src/orchestration-v2/ThreadFork.execution.test.ts — 41 passed across 3 files. Raw green output.
  • Native-fork regression fails against the original implementation; empty-portable regression fails against the initial blanket-fork fix. Each execution run reports one failed and four passed tests. Native red, portable-empty red, original SQLite/memory red.
  • The portable fixture forks across providers with two 17,000-byte messages omitted whole by the handoff budget. First-message /compact rejects before a provider session opens; the same-provider native case opens its session.
  • Changed-file lint and server typecheck passed; typecheck emits existing Effect suggestions. Both independent reviewers returned MERGE on the final revision.
  • Real web client, Linux fs-35, Chromium at 1280×800, isolated dev server, Claude Opus 5.5. Final runtime transcript, exact persisted rows, evidence provenance.

Before runtime transcript. No client rendering changes: the server-only proof exception applies, with an empty capture matrix, red tests and runtime transcript. Shared server behavior applies to web, desktop, mobile and remote connections; runtime integration was exercised with Claude through the web client. No platform-specific code changed.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 2615e21

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused server bug fix that lets a fork’s first /compact use inherited history while preserving rejection for genuinely empty conversations. The production change is isolated to conversation detection, with SQLite, in-memory, and fork execution regression coverage.

📝 Walkthrough

Turn-start context now includes inherited history for qualifying run-forked threads in SQL and in-memory storage. Tests cover native forks, portable-context forks, and /compact behavior.

Changes: Run-fork turn-start context

Layer / File(s)Summary
Conversation detection and validation
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/TurnStartReads.test.ts
Both storage implementations count qualifying run-forked threads as having a conversation. Tests check a native fork whose first message is /compact.
Fork execution and compaction checks
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadFork.execution.test.ts
Parameterized tests check /compact after portable-context and native forks. An empty portable handoff produces the empty-thread compaction error without opening the target session; the native-fork case opens the session without that error.

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification) and gives specific, relevant information. Problem: forking a Claude conversation from a completed response and sending /compact as the first message is rejected with "Cannot compact an empty thread" although the fork inherits history. Change: SQLite and in-memory projections treat native run forks as having inherited conversation via provider history, and portable forks only when the resolved handoff has historical messages; empty portable handoffs and ordinary empty threads keep the rejection. Scope: links issue #24160 and the triaged bug. Verification: lists the focused test command with 41 passing tests across 3 files, red-before-fix evidence for the regression tests, lint and typecheck results, and a runtime transcript with before/after rows. The template asks for the reason a server-only change needs no client screenshots; the author covers this with a server-only proof exception and an empty capture matrix. Minor gaps: the template's Scope section asks for explicit maintainer approval of direction, and the author cites an automated triage flow instead, which the maintainer should confirm. The Verification section also relies on many external links that a reviewer cannot check from the PR text alone. The tool-model line at the end matches the template's requirement.

Fixed the empty portable-handoff finding in 2615e21. Both projection stores now require surviving historical messages for a resolved portable fork; native forks retain inherited-history eligibility. The orchestration regression covers whole-item budget omission and verifies rejection before provider session opening, alongside native-fork acceptance. All 41 focused tests pass; two fresh reviews and the updated proof audit passed.
