fix(web): preserve unsaved queued-message edits across navigation#23990
Problem
Opening a queued message for editing, changing its text, and switching projects without saving loses the edit when the user returns and reopens the editor. The queued message should remain unchanged on the server while the local edit stays recoverable.
Change
Retain queued-edit metadata in the existing per-run composer draft and restore modified drafts when reopening the same queued message, including intentionally empty text and attachment removals. Untouched drafts reseed from the latest queued message so another client's saved edit is not replaced by stale text. Save and Cancel clear the edit draft; the thread's separate composer draft stays intact.
This updates the shared web/desktop composer. Native mobile uses a separate composer.
Scope and approval
Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/23960 GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/23960
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. Reuses the existing fix PR.
Verification
- Reproduced in the real web app on current main 27e0c684c5: edit a queued message, switch projects, return, and reopen it; the composer restored the original text. Runtime transcript.
- The clean-draft regression failed before the correction with
Expected: Updated message / Received: Original messageand passed afterward. - 78 focused tests passed across the edit hook, queue controls, recovery helper, and composer draft store. Scoped lint and web typecheck passed.
- Windows desktop shell unverified on this Linux VM; web exercises the shared composer.
Evidence
Follow-up cc93ef18cf also reconciles retained edits when their run leaves the queue while the user is away. Twelve hook browser cases plus adjacent tests (133 total in scoped checks after ChatView integration) pass. Follow-up 2b2f6fd187 recognizes attachment-only removals during queue-exit recovery and verifies an empty restored edit can save its retained attachment. Follow-up 6024c49afa waits for the thread detail to be live, protecting edits from stale cached run membership. Before / after show one additional isolated full-client cancellation/recovery scenario with a synthetic held queue and no provider turn. This does not certify the remaining full viewport/theme recording matrix below.

Coverage is partial: 8/28 head recording cells across R1/R2, plus five baseline recordings. R3–R7 (attachment-only keyboard save, per-run isolation/latest binding, failed save/retry, and both queue-exit recovery states) remain unverified. The extra post-save away/back substep in R1 is also unverified. Native mobile, Windows/Electron shell, and remote/relay/tunnel were not checked. The responsive narrow capture is web.
Real server commands seeded held queued runs and uploaded synthetic attachments; recordings exercise the real app and UI save. No provider executes in this fixture. Chrome 154 on Linux, DPR 2, CSS 1440×900 or 390×844, explicit light/dark. Wide stills are downscaled by the snapshot tool. Full-app recordings include different sidebar fixture labels and relative clocks; cropped comparisons exclude them. The clock was not frozen. No full-frame pixel-match claim is made.
R1 steps: edit Q1 text and remove its PDF; switch projects and reopen; on head reload and reopen; save, restore the ordinary draft, and immediately reopen Q1. R2: blank the text and remove all attachments, navigate/reload, cancel, and reopen the original Q1. Per-clip timestamps are in the index.

Visible differences: intended retention of edited/empty text and removed attachments after navigation. Full frames also differ in sidebar fixture labels and relative clocks; these are capture-condition differences, not changes made by the PR. Caret visibility was suppressed for still stability and was not verified.

Walkthrough
Queued-message edits now retain text and removed-attachment metadata in composer drafts. The edit hook restores matching dirty drafts and recovers drafts when live run data shows that a run is no longer queued. Browser tests cover persistence and recovery behavior.

#23960] The implementation retains queued-message edit metadata in the per-run composer draft and persists it across navigation. It restores modified text, intentionally empty text, and attachment removals for the same queued message. Clean drafts reseed from the current queued message. Save and Cancel clear the edit metadata while preserving the separate thread draft. The hook and recovery tests cover navigation, persistence, empty text, attachments, queue exit, live-thread timing, Save, Cancel, and draft isolation. The edit remains local until Save.

Explanation
The changed draft store, queued-edit hook, recovery helper, ChatView thread-live input, and tests support [
#23960]. Queue-exit recovery handles the same retained-edit lifecycle and prevents stale recovery on non-live threads. The changes do not show an unrelated product area or server contract change. Native mobile remains outside this shared web/desktop composer scope.

Run `vp migrate` to rewrite these existing Vite+ imports to the same `node` or `runtime` entries shown above. Vite+ retains `vite-plus/test/mocker` for the standalone `@vitest/mocker` API. It does not provide partial runner or expect plugin shims. 199 200 ## Community WebDriverIO provider 201 202 Vite+ 1.0 removes the `vite-plus/test/browser-webdriverio` exports. Use `@vitest/browser-webdriverio` and choose a provider version and framework peers that support your tests. The community maintains this package on its own release schedule. 203 204 `vp migrate` changes legacy provider imports to `@vitest/browser-webdriverio` and ensures a provider version of at least `5.0.0`. It adds `^5.0.0` when the provider is missing, upgrades older versions, and narrows ranges that still allow v4. It also updates referenced catalog entries and removes overrides that force an older provider. Versions and ranges already above this minimum stay unchanged. The migration ensures the required `webdriverio` peer is installed without upgrading an existing framework version. 205 206 For projects that use this provider, `vp migrate` adds an `@vitest/browser` override that matches the bundled Vitest version. Yarn uses `resolutions`. This prevents the provider's version range from retaining an older browser package in the lockfile. 207 208 You manage provider upgrades after this migration; Vite+ does not synchronize community releases with Vitest. Existing imports from the community package stay unchanged. For custom dependencies that the migrator cannot verify, resolve the diagnostic before retrying migration. See the upstream package migration guide. 209 210 Legacy Vite+ WebDriverIO `/context` imports move to `vite-plus/test/browser/context`. Use a retriable browser assertion for the save command.
Locator.click() completes the browser click action, not the returned promise from the React handler. Although this path may currently call commands.save before the click promise resolves, the direct spy assertion relies on scheduling and violates the mandatory browser-test rule.

✅ Addressed in commit afd5be7
Fixed the async assertion in afd5be78ac with vi.waitFor, preserving the expected command arguments. The focused browser/store checks and check:changed pass. The harness intentionally has router:false because navigation is represented by unmount/remount and persisted store hydration; it contains no route consumers. I kept the single inline mock reset rather than adding a one-use setup helper.
@nateEc Thanks. Your reported vi.waitFor change addresses the async assertion concern and preserves the expected command arguments.
Keeping router: false fits this harness’s unmount/remount and store-hydration scope. The single inline mock reset can stay as-is.

Recover retained queued-edit drafts when their run leaves the queue while the user is away.
Navigating away ends the edit (editing becomes null). If the queued run then leaves the queue, the only recovery path does not run. That path is the effect that calls recoverQueuedMessageEdit, and it returns early when editing is null. The retained draft stays under its queued-edit: target. It is never moved into the thread composer, and nothing shows it to the user. This defeats the stated goal of keeping an unsaved edit recoverable until it is saved or cancelled.
Reconcile retained queued-edit: drafts for the active thread when the thread projection returns. For each draft whose run is no longer queued, pass its saved originalText to recoverQueuedMessageEdit, so the same keep-or-discard path and toast apply.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @nateEc
Fixed in cc93ef18cf. Recovery now checks retained queued-edit drafts after the active thread's projection loads, even when the component-local editing state was cleared by navigation. Still-queued edits remain untouched; expired edits follow the existing keep/discard policy without overwriting a separate composer draft or another thread's edit. Added running/missing-run, delayed projection, conflict, still-queued and untouched-edit browser regressions. Scoped checks passed (82 tests).
Isolated full-client verification used a synthetic held queue, typed an unsaved edit, navigated away, and cancelled the queued run without launching a provider. Before: returning left the composer empty. After: the same retained text recovered into the composer. These are client recovery proofs, not evidence of a live provider run.
Model/harness: GPT-5-based Codex / Codex desktop.
@nateEc The supplied code addresses this finding. Recovery now waits for the thread projection, scans retained drafts for the route thread, and runs even when editing is null. Still-queued drafts remain untouched. Expired drafts use their saved originalText with the existing recovery helper.
Your reported 82 passing tests and isolated client check support this fix. I have not rerun those tests. The client check does not establish live-provider behavior, but that is not required for this recovery finding.

✅ Addressed in commit cc93ef1
Addressed in cc93ef18cf: each router:false render now explains why the isolated hook fixture does not mount application routes. Added a setup reset for hoisted commands and draft state so cases do not leak state. All 8 browser cases and scoped checks pass.
@nateEc Thanks for confirming the fix in cc93ef18cf. The comments address this finding. The setup reset also prevents shared mock and draft state from leaking between cases.

Defer recovery until the thread detail is live.
A cached projection can contain a defined but stale runs array before synchronization applies events after its cached sequence. The effect then treats a still-queued run as absent and can discard its unsaved edit. Require the detail status to be "live" before scanning drafts.

✅ Addressed in commit 6024c49
Verified against the cached initial thread state in client-runtime and fixed in 6024c49afa. ChatView now supplies the real useThreadStatus value, and retained-edit reconciliation requires status === live. A defined runs array is no longer considered sufficient proof that the queue is synchronized.
Added three browser regressions: cached missing/running projections retain the queued edit until a live queued projection arrives, and an expired edit recovers only after synchronization. All three fail before the guard and pass after it. Direct tests: 16 passed; all affected checks: 130 tests across four files plus format/lint/knip/typecheck passed. Existing connected-client evidence remains a separate proof; this follow-up specifically exercises the stale-cache boundary in the hook fixture.

@nateEc The supplied code now blocks retained-edit recovery until threadIsLive is true and includes that value in the effect dependencies. This addresses the stale-cache finding.
Your reported regressions cover both retaining edits before synchronization and recovering expired edits after synchronization. Those hook checks remain separate from connected-client verification.

Addressed the outside-diff attachment-removal finding and the restored-empty-edit test suggestion in 2b2f6fd187.
Removal-only drafts now count as dirty when their run leaves the queue. With an empty thread composer, the edited content is recovered without resurrecting removed server attachments; with a separate composer draft, the existing explicit discard/warning path applies instead of silently calling the edit clean. Per-run removedAttachmentIds are deliberately cleared rather than attached to a new ordinary message: those IDs describe the old queued message, which is no longer editable, and have no valid target in the new composer. While the run remains queued, the existing per-run draft still retains the removal metadata.
Two new recovery tests failed before this correction and pass after it. Added a real hook browser case that blanks text while keeping its attachment, navigates away, serializes/rehydrates the draft store, reopens and checks the empty text plus retained attachment, then saves the attachment-only payload. Direct tests: 19 passed. Affected checks: 133 tests / 4 files, format, lint, knip and typechecks passed.

The PR now recovers persisted queued-edit drafts after navigation, but
recoverQueuedMessageEditstill treats context-only changes as clean and clears them. If text or attachments also changed, moveComposerPromptAndImagesmoves those fields but leavesterminalContexts, previewAnnotations, reviewComments, andthreadContextsin the per-run draft. The reopened composer therefore loses those edits.Include the four context collections in the dirty check and use a recovery-specific transfer that moves them into the thread draft before clearing the queued-edit draft. The existing move helper intentionally leaves these collections in the source, so changing only the dirty check is insufficient.

Audit update: current main c3888da8b4 includes #24972 and #25128, which implement the core navigation/recovery behavior with a shared queued-edit store and save ownership. The current main queuedRunEdit and useQueuedRunEdit browser regression suites pass (20 tests), including leaving/returning, recovery when a queued run starts while away, and stale save completion. This PR also covers page-reload persistence, which the in-memory replacement does not establish; I am keeping that distinction explicit rather than claiming full equivalence. Closure/scope decision is pending.
Closing as superseded for the core navigation/data-loss issue by merged #24972 and #25128, with the author's approval.
Verified against main c3888da8b4: the queuedRunEdit unit suite and useQueuedRunEdit browser suite pass (20 tests across two files). Coverage includes leaving and returning to an open edit, recovering changed text when the queued run starts while away, avoiding duplicate recovery during save, and preventing an older save from clearing a newer edit. This is automated browser/hook and store regression evidence, not a new full-client manual verification.
Separate follow-up requirement: preserve and recover an unsaved queued-message edit across a full page reload, including intentional empty text or attachment removal. Main's in-memory edit ownership does not establish this persistence guarantee. That extra scope should be considered independently on top of the shared store rather than keeping this conflicting duplicate implementation open. No claim is made that reload recovery is already solved; this comment preserves the requirement for future work.
