Problem

The Work Louder Codex Micro is a desk controller built for coding agents: six RGB agent keys that track agent threads, seven command keys, a knob and an analog stick. T3 Code can't talk to it, so owners get no thread status on the device and no way to approve, stop or switch threads from it.

Change

Desktop-only support, following the existing SnapShot pattern (main-process service, desktopBridge IPC, renderer coordinator, settings page):

  • Main process (apps/desktop/src/codexMicro): owns the HID connection with node-hid and speaks the device's vendor JSON-RPC (64-byte reports on usage page 0xFF00). It polls the HID topology asynchronously over USB or Bluetooth LE, follows the live endpoint (sleep, channel switch, cable plugged in) and prefers USB when both are listed, maps a renderer-supplied lighting model to firmware lighting, and auto-dims. The protocol and Codex's status colours come from observing the Codex app's integration.
  • Bridge contract (packages/contracts/src/codexMicro.ts): desktopBridge.codexMicro with getState, setLighting and onEvent. Settings live in client settings under codexMicro. They decode field by field, so a stale value falls back to its default and can't invalidate the rest of the client settings.
  • Agent keys: the renderer picks six local threads using the sidebar's own status logic (resolveSidebarThreadStatus, hasUnseenCompletion): needs-you, error and working threads first, or pinned, or most recent. A thread keeps its key while it stays in the six.
  • Key behaviour mirrors Codex:
    • The open thread's key is highlighted, and a thread you're looking at stops reading as unread.
    • Tap opens a thread; a second tap within 350 ms brings the window forward, unless single-tap focus is on.
    • Holding the knob opens the settings.
  • Approve, decline and stop go through the existing orchestration commands and only act on threads shown on the keys. When there's nothing to act on, a toast says so.
  • Other keys replay the user's own binding for a keybinding command, the same approach the HTML render frame uses. That way every existing handler, rebinding and when clause keeps working without a new command bus.
  • Bluetooth: over BLE, macOS exposes the keyboard, consumer, mouse and vendor collections on one HID handle, so only vendor reports (id 6) are parsed. Discovery and transport detection mirror what the Codex app does, all through node-hid.
  • Settings > Codex Micro appears only while a device is connected and shows whether it is on USB or Bluetooth. It has an interactive device preview, agent key mode and pins, an action per key, knob mode, analog stick, brightness, auto-dim and key backlight.
  • Packaging: node-hid is a desktop runtime external, like the other native addons. Builds keep only the target platform's prebuild, so Windows signing never sees the ELF and Mach-O ones.
  • Docs: user guide in docs/user/codex-micro.md.

Scope and approval

This is a new feature, and I don't have prior maintainer approval or a linked Ideas discussion. I'm opening it as a draft to show a working, contained implementation and start that conversation, and I'm happy to split it, reshape it, or close it in favour of a discussion. It adds no behaviour for anyone without the device: the main process only enumerates HID devices, the renderer controller mounts only while a device is connected, and the settings entry is hidden otherwise.

Verification

Settings > Codex Micro with a connected device

Settings > Codex Micro connected over Bluetooth

Before this change there is no Codex Micro entry in Settings; with no device connected that is still the case.

  • Hardware: a Codex Micro (firmware v0.4.1) on macOS 26 (Apple Silicon) over USB and over Bluetooth LE (channel 2), running vp run dev:desktop against an isolated home seeded with migrate-dev-db.
  • Detection and status: the Settings entry appears on connect; the page shows firmware and battery.
  • Lighting: agent keys light with real thread states (unread threads green, the open thread highlighted) and the ring summarises the most urgent state.
  • Earlier revision, on the device: pressing agent keys opened their threads; the command keys and joystick ran their commands; knob turns moved between keys.
  • Not yet re-checked on the device after the latest commit: the double-tap focus, the knob long-press, and the "not available" toasts.
  • Focused tests (vp test run on the touched files):
    • HID framing and RPC parsing, ignoring non-vendor reports that share a Bluetooth handle, endpoint selection and USB handoff, and the lighting frame (CodexMicroProtocol.test.ts).
    • Slot assignment: urgency order, sticky keys, settled, archived and snoozed threads, pins and modes (codexMicroSlots.test.ts).
    • Shortcut replay per platform (codexMicroActions.test.ts).
    • Stale stored settings decoding without breaking the rest of the client settings (settings.test.ts).
    • The per-platform node-hid prebuild exclusions (build-desktop-artifact.test.ts).
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip and typecheck (32 packages) pass. The one failing test, build-desktop-artifact.test.ts "skips the primary native probe for cross-architecture Windows payloads", fails identically on main (8bcef34f) on this machine.
  • Not checked:
    • a packaged or signed build;
    • Windows and Linux;
    • the live USB-to-Bluetooth handoff on the device (covered by reconcileEndpoint tests);
    • first-run Input Monitoring prompting (the dev app inherited an existing grant).

Walkthrough

Adds Work Louder Codex Micro support. The desktop app communicates with the HID device and exposes state, input, and lighting through IPC. The renderer assigns threads to device keys, handles configured controls, and provides device settings and documentation.

Load node-hid lazily so a native load failure cannot stop app startup.

DesktopApp installs the IPC handlers during startup. That path constructs CodexMicroDevice, whose static node-hid import loads the native addon before a user connects a device.

If the addon is unavailable for the packaged OS and architecture, desktop startup can fail. Load node-hid on first use and convert load failures into CodexMicroError. Reuse the lazy-loaded module for enumeration and HIDAsync.open(...).

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @Hormold

Fixed in c911cd67: node-hid is now imported lazily on first enumeration/open and cached; a load failure becomes a CodexMicroError, so a broken prebuild only disables the Codex Micro (apps/desktop/src/codexMicro/CodexMicroDevice.ts, loadNodeHid).

@Hormold Thanks for fixing this in c911cd67. The reported lazy import, caching, and CodexMicroError handling address the native module load concern.

15Native modules never load in the Electron main process on the startup path, and the two the
16snapshot feature keeps are isolated: `@crowecawcaw/xa11y` runs only in forked Node-mode children
17(`SnapShotAccessibilityWorker`, `RegionSnapShotWorker`) and a worker thread, and `ffi-rs` loads
18lazily inside `WindowsForeground.ts` for a handful of Win32 calls. macOS window lookup shells out
19to `osascript` instead of a native addon. A crash or stall in any of these must not take the app
20down, so new native capability goes in a child with a deadline, not an `import` in main.

Handle a rejected device.close() so disconnect still reports the disconnected state.

Effect.promise turns a promise rejection into a defect. Effect.ignore ignores typed failures only. If close() rejects, for example on a device that was already unplugged, disconnect dies at this line. setState(DISCONNECTED_CODEX_MICRO_STATE) then never runs. The renderer keeps connected: true. The coordinator stays mounted and the settings nav item stays visible while the device is gone.

Use Effect.tryPromise so Effect.ignore can catch the rejection.

Replace the .dark selector with @variant dark.

The repository rule is to use @variant dark and @variant light for theme-only rules, not .dark selectors. This block overrides the --micro-* variables under .dark. The existing :root block in this file already nests @variant dark (see the block near Line 143). Nest the dark overrides inside the Codex Micro :root block.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @Hormold

Fixed in c911cd67: the dark values are nested as @variant dark inside the Codex Micro :root block, unchanged.

@Hormold Thanks. The supplied code matches the requested fix: the dark values remain unchanged inside @variant dark in the Codex Micro :root block.

7# webContents
8
9> Render and control web pages.
10
11Process: Main
12
13`webContents` is an EventEmitter. It is responsible for rendering and controlling a web page and is a property of the `BrowserWindow` object. An example of accessing the `webContents` object:
14
15 `
16
17 const { BrowserWindow } = require('electron')
18
19 const win = new BrowserWindow({ width: 800, height: 1500 })
20
21 win.loadURL('https://github.com')
22
23 const contents = win.webContents
24
25 console.log(contents)
26
27 `
28
29## Navigation Events
30
31Several events can be used to monitor navigations as they occur within a `webContents`.
32
33### Document Navigations
34
35When a `webContents` navigates to another page (as opposed to an in-page navigation), the following events will be fired.
36
37 * `did-start-navigation`
38 * `will-frame-navigate`
39 * `will-navigate` (only fired when main frame navigates)
40 * `will-redirect` (only fired when a redirect happens during navigation)
41
42#### `contents.send(channel, ...args)`
43
44 * `channel` string
45 * `...args` any[]
46
47Send an asynchronous message to the renderer process via `channel`, along with arguments. Arguments will be serialized with the Structured Clone Algorithm, just like `postMessage`, so prototype chains will not be included. Sending Functions, Promises, Symbols, WeakMaps, or WeakSets will throw an exception.
48
49warning
50
51Sending non-standard JavaScript types such as DOM objects or special Electron objects will throw an exception.
52
53For additional reading, refer to Electron's IPC guide.
54
55#### `contents.sendToFrame(frameId, channel, ...args)`
56
57 * `frameId` Integer | [number, number] - the ID of the frame to send to, or a pair of `[processId, frameId]` if the frame is in a different process to the main frame.
58 * `channel` string
59 * `...args` any[]
60
61Send an asynchronous message to a specific frame in a renderer process via `channel`, along with arguments. Arguments will be serialized with the Structured Clone Algorithm, just like `postMessage`, so prototype chains will not be included. Sending Functions, Promises, Symbols, WeakMaps, or WeakSets will throw an exception.
62
63> NOTE: Sending non-standard JavaScript types such as DOM objects or special Electron objects will throw an exception.
64
65The renderer process can handle the message by listening to `channel` with the `ipcRenderer` module.
66
67If you want to get the `frameId` of a given renderer context you should use the `webFrame.routingId` value. E.g.
68
69 `
70
71 // In a renderer process
72
73 console.log('My frameId is:', require('electron').webFrame.routingId)
74
75 `
76
77You can also read `frameId` from all incoming IPC messages in the main process.
78
79 `
80
81 // In the main process
82
83 ipcMain.on('ping', (event) => {
84
85 console.info('Message came from frameId:', event.frameId)
86
87 })
88
89 `
90
91#### `contents.postMessage(channel, message, [transfer])`
92
93 * `channel` string
94 * `message` any
95 * `transfer` MessagePortMain[] (optional)
96
97Send a message to the renderer process, optionally transferring ownership of zero or more `MessagePortMain` objects.
98
99The transferred `MessagePortMain` objects will be available in the renderer process by accessing the `ports` property of the emitted event. When they arrive in the renderer, they will be native DOM `MessagePort` objects.
100
101 `
102
103 // Main process
104
105 const win = new BrowserWindow()
106
107 const { port1, port2 } = new MessageChannelMain()

132info
133
134If you want to call this API from a renderer process with context isolation enabled, place the API call in your preload script and expose it using the `contextBridge` API.
135
136The `ipcRenderer` module is an EventEmitter. It provides a few methods so you can send synchronous and asynchronous messages from the render process (web page) to the main process. You can also receive replies from the main process.
137
138See IPC tutorial for code examples.
139
140## Methods
141
142The `ipcRenderer` module has the following method to listen for events and send messages:
143
144### `ipcRenderer.on(channel, listener)`
145
146 * `channel` string
147 * `listener` Function
148 * `event` IpcRendererEvent
149 * `...args` any[]
150
151Listens to `channel`, when a new message arrives `listener` would be called with `listener(event, args...)`.
152
153warning
154
155Do not expose the `event` argument to the renderer for security reasons! Wrap any callback that you receive from the renderer in another function like this: `ipcRenderer.on('my-channel', (event, ...args) => callback(...args))`. Not wrapping the callback in such a function would expose dangerous Electron APIs to the renderer process. See the security guide for more info.
156

Ignore the initial snapshot after a state event.

getState() can capture the connected state before disconnect, while its asynchronous response is delivered after the disconnected webContents.send event. The continuation then restores device.connected to true. useCodexMicroConnected() can report a disconnected device as connected until another state event arrives.

Use a stable option value for each MenuRadioItem.

Two selectable threads can have the same thread.title. This gives them duplicate React keys. When the thread list updates, React cannot preserve their identities reliably and may reuse the wrong radio item or emit a duplicate-key warning. Use the thread ID instead of the label or index.

8Use a stable unique identifier for each MenuRadioItem in the thread options,
9rather than the potentially duplicated option.label. Update the key in the
10MenuRadioItem rendering to use the thread ID, while leaving its selected value

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @Hormold

Fixed in c911cd67: items are keyed by index plus label. OptionMenu is generic (threads, actions, modes), so the index, which is already the radio value, is the stable identity here.

@Hormold Thanks. Adding the index to the label removes the duplicate-key collision. The index is positional, rather than stable across list reordering, but this addresses the duplicate-label concern without changing the radio value behavior.

120L8:
121L9: * 【6†#9055†github.com】 【7†`f665607`†github.com】 Thanks 【8†@Tyagiquamar†github.com】! - Pass a `NonEmptyArray` to the `onNonEmpty` callback of `Array.match` when the input is a mutable array.

123L11: * 【9†#9110†github.com】 【10†`dbf442b`†github.com】 Thanks 【11†@petar-omni†github.com】! - Fix `AsyncResult.all` failures carrying a single input's `previousSuccess` instead of the combined record or tuple.
124L12: * 【12†#9105†github.com】 【13†`74d1930`†github.com】 Thanks 【14†@tim-smart†github.com】! - Fix infinite atom rebuilds caused by late reads of uninitialized dependencies.
125L13:
126L14: * 【15†#9145†github.com】 【16†`a03afb6`†github.com】 Thanks 【17†@jayhemnani9910†github.com】! - Add `Flag.withOptionalValue` for GNU-style flags with an optional value, like `--color[=WHEN]`. A bare flag uses the given value; an explicit value must be attached with `=`.
127L15: * 【18†#9131†github.com】 【19†`f159284`†github.com】 Thanks 【14†@tim-smart†github.com】! - Fix lost deferred callback wakes in cluster workflows when an activity suspends while a parallel activity is still running.
128L16:
129L17: * 【20†#9094†github.com】 【21†`5d301cc`†github.com】 Thanks 【22†@okxint†github.com】! - Name cluster entity RPC server spans by entity type only (e.g. `WorkflowEntity.Run`) so span names stay low-cardinality. The entity ID is still recorded in the `entity.id` span attribute.
130L18: * 【23†#9176†github.com】 【24†`cd74ea2`†github.com】 Thanks 【25†@effect-bot†github.com】! - Recover persisted local cluster replies from storage to prevent requests hanging when replies arrive before handler registration. Retain local reply notifications as storage-reader wakeups for low-latency streaming.
131L19:
132L20: Defer terminal in-memory reply publication until the successful outer transaction completes, preserving the commit boundary for reply readers.
133L21: * 【26†#9095†github.com】 【27†`925cf64`†github.com】 Thanks 【17†@jayhemnani9910†github.com】! - Fix `ConfigProvider.fromDotEnv` and `fromDotEnvContents` rescanning expanded values when `expandVariables` is enabled. Self and circular references no longer overflow the stack, escaped `\$NAME` stays literal, and defaults apply when a reference expands to an empty value.
134L22: * 【28†#9109†github.com】 【29†`54c51d9`†github.com】 Thanks 【30†@devangpratap†github.com】! - Fix `Duration` conversions throwing for very large millisecond values, and make those durations equal to their nanosecond equivalents.
135L23:
136L24: * 【31†#9161†github.com】 【32†`995c104`†github.com】 Thanks 【30†@devangpratap†github.com】! - Fix `Duration` conversions losing nanosecond precision for large integer millisecond values.
137L25: * 【33†#9112†github.com】 【34†`816575e`†github.com】 Thanks 【25†@effect-bot†github.com】! - Use `bigint` for 64-bit `FileSystem.File.Info` metadata. `dev` is now a `bigint`, and `ino`, `rdev`, `nlink`, and `blocks` are `Option<bigint>`, so file stats no longer fail or drop values outside the safe integer range. Node and Bun read `dev`, `ino`, `rdev`, and `nlink` as unsigned 64-bit integers. Deno reports these fields as numbers, so values above `Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER` are rounded by Deno before conversion.
138L26: * 【35†#9150†github.com】 【36†`0df6e06`†github.com】 Thanks 【14†@tim-smart†github.com】! - Support per-request URLs in `GraphQLProtocol.layerHttp` and `makeHttp`, as a function of the context and operation or as an `Effect<string>`. `GraphQLResolver` batches lookups by URL.

542## Real breakage found: `Random.nextIntBetween` silently flipped to an inclusive upper bound
543
544v3: `nextIntBetween(min, max)` is half-open `[min, max)`.
545v4 beta.102: the same call is inclusive of `max`. `{ halfOpen: true }` restores v3.
546
547Verified in the unpacked beta.102 source, `src/Random.ts:190`:
548
549 const extra = options?.halfOpen === true ? 0 : 1
550
551Documented at `dist/Random.d.ts:155`. The symbol keeps its name, its arity-2 call shape, and an
552`@since 2.0.0` tag — so nothing at a call site announces that the meaning moved, and no typecheck
553can catch an off-by-one in a bound. This is the canonical "identifier that survived but changed
554meaning" hazard, and the most dangerous class of finding in this migration.
555
556Ruling: use `{ halfOpen: true }` at every site that relied on v3 semantics. Not `max - 1` — that
557computes the same values while discarding the fact that the default changed, leaving the next reader
558no way to recover it. Differential tests must use an edge value that distinguishes 9 from 10 and must

Pass { halfOpen: true } to nextIntBetween so the request ID stays below 999.

With the default options, Random.nextIntBetween(0, MAX_RPC_ID) in Effect 4.0.5 includes the upper bound. It can return 999, which the firmware rejects. The request then fails or times out after 5 seconds. Effect 4.0.5 excludes the upper bound only when halfOpen: true is passed.

Fixed in 2caff655: nextIntBetween(0, MAX_RPC_ID, { halfOpen: true }), so ids stay in [0, 999).

@Hormold Thanks for the fix. { halfOpen: true } keeps request IDs in [0, 999), which addresses this finding.

Route knob preview clicks to the intended control.

When a user clicks the preview knob, openRowMenu("codex-micro-knob") finds no marked trigger in a preset mode. In custom mode, it opens the first action menu, for ENC_CC, instead of the ENC click action. Mark the mode trigger for preset modes and target controlRowId("ENC") for the custom click action.

Ignore malformed device notifications.

The per-report IPC and wake() calls do not have a demonstrated throughput or latency violation. The inspected source defines no joystick report-rate or latency contract.

Malformed notifications can violate the CodexMicroInputEvent contract. Missing params becomes {}, so the device can publish NaN joystick fields or the key "undefined". The renderer stores joystick values directly and can add the undefined key to pressedKeys.

Validate the fields before calling wake() or publishing the event.

Assign each pinned thread to one key.

If pinnedThreads contains the same thread ID twice, this loop assigns that thread to two keys. pinned.size then counts only one occupied key. A ranked thread can lose its key even when six distinct threads are available. Ignore repeated IDs when building pins, or reject duplicate pins in the settings schema.
