Problem

With related checkouts grouped in the default sidebar, Settings → Project → Checkouts had no per-checkout grouping control. A checkout could not be split into its own project there, or restored to the global rule after being split.

Change

Restore the existing four grouping choices on every checkout, including single-checkout projects. Persist changes through the client-settings update queue using the same override keys as the legacy dialog; inheriting removes only the selected override. Existing navigation follows the checkout when its current group empties.

Save failures display an error toast and retain the saved selection. Accessible names include the environment label and full ID. Checkout controls stack at narrow widths; a lone checkout keeps its removal action in Danger. The legacy dialog shares the labels and override helper.

Scope and approval

Fixes #16445

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow: #16445. This restores an existing client setting removed from project settings by #10639; it adds no contract, server, schema or native-client behavior.

Verification

At f822473:

  • Focused ProjectSettingsPanel logic tests: 3/3 passed. Targeted lint, formatting and web typecheck passed. All32 reported CI checks passed; both independent full code reviews returned MERGE. Macroscope approved and CodeRabbit reports no actionable findings.
  • Real-app checks cover grouping/inheritance, preservation of other overrides, scoped split/return navigation, two environments with the same path, keyboard interaction, reduced project permissions, legacy Save/restore and both persistence-rejection messages.
  • Independent corrected proof audit: SUFFICIENT. All112 comparison counts/masks were independently verified. One exact-path head rebuild matched with0 changed pixels at both thresholds.

Visible changes: the helper and grouping selectors add height; Remove controls shift, nested rows stack, and narrow paths/default labels truncate. The failure toast overlays the upper settings content at narrow width. Wide legacy-dialog and breadcrumb glyph raster differences are disclosed per row; no claim of zero unrelated pixel changes is made. Historical invalid/contaminated comparisons are excluded, with provenance retained in the linked reports. Web content used by desktop is covered; no native Electron-shell change or mobile grouping override was introduced. All owned capture/audit servers are stopped.

Walkthrough

Project settings now provide per-checkout sidebar grouping controls. Each checkout can inherit the global mode or select a grouping mode. The legacy sidebar and settings panel use shared grouping labels and override construction.

Changes: Per-checkout grouping

Layer / File(s)Summary
Grouping override helper
apps/web/src/sidebarProjectGrouping.ts, apps/web/src/components/LegacySidebar.tsx
The shared module exports grouping labels and a helper that copies overrides, removes the selected key for inherit, or sets it to the selected mode. The legacy sidebar uses the helper when saving grouping preferences.
Project settings checkout controls
apps/web/src/components/settings/ProjectSettingsPanel.tsx
The settings panel displays a grouping selector for each checkout and persists valid selections. Save failures are logged and shown in an error toast. The Checkouts section appears for single-checkout groups. Removal controls remain available only for groups with multiple checkouts.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(web): project settings can set a checkout's grouping rule again" matches the main change. The diff adds a per-checkout grouping-rule selector to Project Settings, and the shared helper and label constant move to sidebarProjectGrouping.ts. The title names the fixed behavior, the affected surface, and the scope (web), so it is specific and accurate.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #16445 requires a per-checkout grouping control in the default-sidebar or Project Settings experience. ProjectSettingsPanel now provides the four required choices for single and multi-checkout views. It writes the checkout override with the shared key and values through persistClientSettingsUpdate. It keeps the control available without project write access and follows a moved checkout to its new group. The shared labels and withProjectGroupingOverride preserve the legacy dialog behavior. The reported logic tests, targeted lint, typecheck, and browser checks support the implementation. The current head also reports error feedback for failed saves and accessible names with environment context.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #16445. The Project Settings control, single-checkout visibility, regrouping navigation, persistence error handling, accessibility labels, and responsive layout support the requested behavior. The shared helper and labels support equivalent behavior in LegacySidebar. The reviewed changes are limited to apps/web; no unrelated server, contract, schema, or mobile behavior changes are included.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description includes all required sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. It explains the affected behavior, implementation scope, linked issue, focused checks, UI evidence, limitations, and test environment. The scope section does not include a direct maintainer approval comment, but it provides a triaged issue and explains why this focused restoration does not require broader approval.

  • fix(web): report checkout grouping save failures and name each checkout's environmentf822473

Fixed both CodeRabbit findings in f822473: failed grouping saves show an error toast and retain the saved selection; accessible names include the environment label and full ID.

Focused logic tests: 3/3 passed. Targeted lint, format and web typecheck passed. Both independent code reviewers returned MERGE.

Integrated check: real web dev app, Chromium 154 on Linux, DPR 2, no device emulation, 390×844 dark. A synthetic persistence rejection followed by choosing Keep separate leaves the inherited rule and empty override map intact and displays the error. Recording: 0s open select, approximately 1s choose Keep separate, approximately 2s toast and unchanged selection.

browser-screenshot-localhost-mvlslbxs-41eca374.png mcp-launch-client-3a7a0b3e00-f428-46f3-ad82-685d92fda730-fwd-3a06b9743a2ae6c9f9f-9b59d720-74a6-4172-9f7c-1261c06313ef-mp4.mp4

Independent proof reconciliation remains INSUFFICIENT: historical capture SHAs are preserved, final-head matrix coverage, paired failure evidence, duplicate-path accessibility interaction, keyboard/permission action coverage and fixture reproducibility remain open. R4/R5/R6 threshold counts use 8/255 (3.1373%), not the global 8% caption. The previous blanket SUFFICIENT statement should not be used for the current head. CI and bot checks must run again on this push.
