updateRemaining performs filesystem-backed update-marker work as a new exported free function called by a CLI handler. Could you move this operation into an update-marker service method and have the handler only invoke that method and print its result? Keep the filesystem dependency in the service's Effect environment. This requires moving the operation and updating its consumers, so there is no single-hunk suggested diff.

With a relative [workdir] and $CO outside the caller’s current directory, start_desktop resolves $WORK/display and $FAKE/desktop.log after changing into $CO, so the desktop writes to the wrong paths (or fails opening the log) and the parent can wait forever for the display file. Canonicalize WORK before changing directories and make the display wait fail with a deadline.

After cleanup sends TERM to a recorded server, this loop never exits if the PID is an unreaped zombie: kill -0 still succeeds for an existing process, so F1 stalls before its archive fixture and other rows can hang in the EXIT trap. Check the process state, as server_running does, and bound the wait instead of polling kill -0 indefinitely.

When the checkout path contains spaces, the generated archive t3 script splits it into separate arguments, so Node receives the wrong entrypoint and archive fixtures fail; shell metacharacters in the path can also be interpreted as syntax. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚑ Quick win

Exclude this helper from typecheck and knip. CI fails on both.

The helper imports ./tunnel.ts. That file exists only in packages/ssh/src, because the driver script copies this helper there at run time. In scripts/evidence, TypeScript cannot resolve the import (TS2307), and vp run knip:check reports the file as unused. Both CI jobs fail.

Do not change the import to a relative path into packages/ssh/src. The copy-and-run workflow in pr-23005-ssh-update-race.sh runs the helper from packages/ssh/src and needs ./tunnel.ts.

Instead, take the file out of both tools:

  • Add evidence/** to exclude in the scripts package tsconfig.json.
  • Add scripts/evidence/** to ignore in the knip configuration.

Alternatively, remove the helper and the driver script from the PR if they are not meant to stay in the repository.

8directory pattern to the scripts package tsconfig.json exclude list and
9scripts/evidence/** to the knip ignore list. Keep the launchOrReuseRemoteServer
10import unchanged so the copied helper can still run from packages/ssh/src.

+# <checkout> is the tree under test (before or after the fix); the launch

+# F8b also needs OLD_CHECKOUT=<pre-fix checkout> for the remote t3 that lacks
+# update-remaining. F13/F14 run the dev desktop (`vp run dev:desktop`) under
+# headless-desktop with --home-dir $FAKE/.t3 and an isolated
+# XDG_CONFIG_HOME; run desktop-warmup first so the build does not eat the
+# marker window. Stills land in $WORK/shots.

Make helper capture failures visible and clean up the copied helper.

Both node calls suppress stdout and stderr. If either call fails, set -e exits before rm -f "$helper". The existing EXIT trap runs cleanup, but cleanup does not remove the helper. The failed run can therefore leave .ev-capture-launcher.ts in the checkout without showing the failure output.

Track the helper path in the existing cleanup function. Do not rely on a RETURN trap for set -e exits.

8Update capture_scripts to preserve stderr from both node calls and track the
9copied helper path in a variable that cleanup removes on EXIT, including when
10set -e aborts; clear the path after normal removal so cleanup does not act on a
11stale value. Do not rely on a RETURN trap.
