Problem

Desktop-backed preview_resize returned 1280×800 even when the page had resized, and preview_status omitted its measured viewport. This addresses #22942, mirrored as #22943.

Change

Native CDP pages have no Playwright-managed viewport. Resize used page.viewportSize() ?? UNATTACHED_FILL_VIEWPORT, and status only included a non-null Playwright viewport. The desktop applies the stored setting asynchronously through preview events; its channel has no resize acknowledgement to consume.

Scope and approval

Fixes #22942

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow; GitCafe mirror #22943.

Verification

Reuse the snapshot path's isolated-world CDP metrics reader after desktop resize and for status. Return measured CSS dimensions separately from the requested setting. Fixed-size results include optional confirmed; a mismatch returns confirmed:false. Fill omits confirmation because it has no target dimensions. Measurement failures remain resize execution errors, and a missing response reaches the broker deadline. Status omits unavailable dimensions, including while a modal dialog is pending, so recovery stays available. Tool guidance explains asynchronous sizing and rechecking status.

Headless results are unchanged. Contracts add one optional result field; Electron code and the desktop-channel protocol are unchanged.

Before payloads (real broker outputs, fake desktop CDP; tab IDs omitted):

json
1{"setting":{"_tag":"freeform","width":1920,"height":1200},"viewport":{"width":1280,"height":800}}
2{"viewportSetting":{"_tag":"freeform","width":1920,"height":1200}}

After:

json
1{"setting":{"_tag":"freeform","width":1920,"height":1200},"viewport":{"width":1920,"height":1200},"confirmed":true}
2{"viewportSetting":{"_tag":"freeform","width":1920,"height":1200},"viewport":{"width":1920,"height":1200}}

The same harness reproduces the before result and verifies measured 560×760 freeform and 390×844 iPhone preset results. A requested 1920×1200 with measured 963×611 returns that measured size and confirmed:false. A resize preceding UI application reports its old measured size as unconfirmed; a later status reads the applied dimensions. This is measurement, not an apply acknowledgment.

Validation:

  • Test-first baseline: 8 failed / 25 passed. Final vp test run apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts: 36 passed. Real broker, manager, ServerBrowser and metrics-reader paths; fake attach channel and Playwright/CDP boundary.
  • Delayed/rejected measurement receipts, never-responding measurement with TestClock deadline, status beside requested setting, dialog recovery, unavailable status measurement, fill, apply race, and unchanged headless results covered. No real sleeps.
  • Targeted lint, formatting, server/contracts typechecks and diff whitespace checks pass. Typechecks emit existing suggestion diagnostics.
  • Independent Codex GPT-6.1-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 code reviews: MERGE after fixing the initial dialog finding and clarifying confirmation guidance.
  • Independent proof audits by both models: SUFFICIENT for server reporting through fake CDP; each reran all 36 tests and inspected before/after payloads. Neither claims native Electron or transport verification.

Limits: cannot-verify desktop live on this VM. The harness proves reporting from CDP measurements, not real Electron layout or fd/WebSocket transport. The unminimized open:false symptom remains a separate follow-up. A late desktop attach can leave a headless tab alongside the desktop page, as tracked in #22882; this code-only candidate does not establish the cause of the author's persistent DOM mismatch.

Model/harness: GPT-6.1-Sol through Codex in T3 Code; delegated code reviews and proof audits by Codex GPT-6.1-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5.

📝 Walkthrough

Desktop preview status now reports measured viewport dimensions. Desktop resize responses include measured dimensions and indicate whether a requested fixed size was confirmed.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 859cc

Desktop preview resize and status now report measured viewport sizes. If the page zoom keeps changing during a resize, the error tells the caller to retry a snapshot instead of the resize. This is a small wording issue and does not block merging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make the zoom-instability error message fit the resize path.

preview_resize now calls ServerBrowserPage.readPageMetrics on desktop tabs. That helper fails with a fixed message (ServerBrowserPage.ts lines 467-469): "The page's zoom kept changing while the snapshot read its size. Try the snapshot again." The failure reaches the agent as the resize error. In that case the message refers to a snapshot the agent never requested and tells it to retry the wrong operation.

Use a message that does not name the operation. The alternative is to let each caller supply the message.

🟠 High preview/ServerBrowser.ts:1964

A nonresponding readPageMetrics call leaves the tab’s control queue blocked indefinitely, so subsequent agent actions, human input, and system settings cannot run. This read is awaited inside tab.control.agent without a deadline; bound it within the queued operation so it settles when the resize deadline expires.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused, backward-compatible preview bug fix that reports measured desktop dimensions, adds optional confirmation, and leaves headless behavior unchanged. A separate High-severity finding identifies a potentially unbounded metrics read that could block the tab control queue and must be handled by the repository’s blocking-severity policy.

Needs human approval because:
