Problem

In Settings → Storage, turning an Off retention rule on immediately saved eight days before its age input appeared. Cleanup could run with that intermediate age before the user entered the intended value.

Change

Turning a rule on opens a focused local age draft. Committing the displayed age saves it; leaving an untouched draft, Escape, or switching it off discards it. Turning an already saved rule off still saves immediately. The shared control covers inactive worktrees, settled worktrees, browser artifacts, and rotated logs.

Scoped saves report their outcome so a failed enable returns to Off. Submission identity preserves a newer age when an older save fails. Enter uses NumberField’s locale-aware numeric value and rejects invalid visible text.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/14743

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. Reuses the existing contribution and its PR branch. The change affects the shared web/desktop Storage control and scoped-save outcome reporting.

Verification

Final head: 1e57ef1. Subsequent test-only follow-ups add failure-safe render disposal and assert the retained age through vi.waitFor; fixture tooling adds explicit post-capture cleanup. Production remains unchanged from the compiler-compatible implementation described below. All 26 checks pass, including CodeRabbit; latest focused suites: 1176 tests passed, web typecheck, targeted lint and formatting clean.

  • Red test on main: clicking On unexpectedly called the settings updater with worktreeAfterDays: 8 before any age was committed.

  • vp test run src/components/settings/StorageSettings.browser.test.tsx src/components/settings/scopedSettings.test.ts from apps/web: 36 passed after integration with main.

  • Scoped web typecheck and targeted lint passed. Both independent final code reviews returned MERGE.

  • Real dev app: On sent no settings update; committing 30 produced a matching acknowledgement and server readback. All four retention rules were exercised at 1440 and 390 CSS widths, light and dark. Delete now stayed disabled during the draft and became enabled after acknowledgement; cleanup was not manually executed.

  • Controlled command-boundary captures exercised the actual scoped runner, planner, aggregation, and toast provider for failure, unavailable-plan, and partial-success outcomes. Component captures cover overlapping submissions and pointer/composition ordering; these do not establish arbitrary transport reordering guarantees.

  • Fixture follow-up: targeted lint and format checks pass; scoped Knip for the scripts workspace reports no findings. Namespace import and Knip entry corrections leave production and generated harness text unchanged.

  • Compiler follow-up: CI=true vp test run --project unit --project browser for StorageSettings, scopedSettings, SourceControlWritingSettings, and React compiler coverage: 4 files / 1,177 tests passed. Targeted lint and formatting passed. The prior failure was unsupported logical-assignment syntax, now replaced with an equivalent null guard.

Evidence

Incidental capture differences outside the retention control are explicitly measured at the light desktop sidebar seam. Narrow captures retain 28–29 focus-ring corner pixels of unknown cause. No “nothing else changed” claim is made. The full visible-difference accounting partitions every changed region; the earlier unequal-seed and theme-mislabeled comparisons are superseded.

Real app, Chromium on Linux, en-US/UTC, DPR 2, system fonts, default motion. CSS viewports 1440×1000 and 390×844; saved images 1280×889 and 780×1688. Identical disposable project data and persisted themes; clock not frozen (no changing clock text on this surface). Before source is 22840ab943; after capture production is 30734756fc, byte-identical to the final reviewed production. Replay fixtures are committed at 0642083522.

Before dark desktop recording · After dark desktop recording · All eight real-app recordings and captures · Timestamped actions.

The four-caller and failure/race addendum contains recordings in every width/theme, labeled real-app or controlled-boundary chapters. Bounded request/ack/readback windows and corrected earlier metadata retain provenance and invalid comparisons explicitly.

Final head d3910b9e17 includes main and fixture lint corrections. Compared with the captured production, the sole control change replaces pressing.current ??= "row" with an explicit null check and assignment so React Compiler can optimize it; the allowed ref values and event behavior are unchanged. The scoped-save hook and regression tests remain byte-identical. Independent proof audit: SUFFICIENT. Its fresh replay has five pixel-identical checkpoints; the enable checkpoint differs only at the insertion caret.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This bug fix changes persistence and activation behavior for four cleanup settings through a nontrivial draft state machine, rather than making a simple isolated edit. An unresolved locale path can save German 1.000 as 1 day, creating a risk of premature cleanup.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A committed retention change can fan out to selected connected environments or selected project overrides. The planner retains those target boundaries, and the hook checks each patch’s required permissions against the destination environment before submitting it.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Retention commits continue through the scoped-settings planner and existing server-settings RPC. The PR changes when the UI submits a value and how it consumes completion, rather than granting a new direct cleanup capability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Within one server, settings updates hold a semaphore across reload, patch application, persistence, cache replacement and change publication. Across environments, writes settle independently: false can mean partial success and does not roll back successful destinations.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider reconciling failed edits to already-enabled retention rules with authoritative saved values, while preserving per-environment partial-success information. This would reduce pre-existing divergence between displayed cleanup policy and effective policy.

apps/web/src/components/settings/StorageSettings.tsx:209-211 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Suppress the draft commit when the user switches the rule off.

When a user edits a newly enabled duration and clicks the same switch, the input blur path calls onValueCommitted. RetentionControl then saves the draft age before the switch handler discards the draft and disables the rule. Suppress this commit when focus moves to the switch.

Add a browser test for typing an age and clicking the same switch without pressing Enter or a stepper. Assert that no settings update occurs.

apps/web/src/components/settings/StorageSettings.tsx:164-183 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the local off state until the queued save completes.

When the user disables a newly enabled rule, onChange(null) is queued behind the pending age save. If the age save succeeds first, the settings stream updates value to the age while the switch handler has already selected Off. Because enabled depends on value !== null, the switch can turn on again until the queued null save completes.

Keep a local pending-off override until the null save succeeds. Clear it on failure and ignore stale callbacks.

Make the grouped-text assertion depend on parsing "1.000".

setInputValue(input, "1000") sets the draft to 1000. The later assignment changes only the DOM value and dispatches no input event. The Enter handler commits draft directly, so this test can pass without parsing "1.000".

Restore the saved age when an enabled retention save fails.

When an enabled rule commits an edit, commitDays calls onChange(days) but skips failure handling because value !== null. If the promise resolves false without changing the settings prop, the edited draft remains displayed although it was not persisted. Handle the false result for both enabled and newly enabled rules.

Rechecked the six earlier findings against the rewritten control:

  • Enter uses NumberField’s locale-parsed numeric draft; the raw Number(...) conversion is gone.
  • Pointer state clears on leave, release, and cancellation.
  • Scoped saves report success or failure. A failed current enable save returns Off; an older failed submission cannot cancel a newer edit.
  • The old render-time valueRef assignment is removed. Ref synchronization happens in a layout effect.
  • Storage’s existing scope-search key remounts the settings outlet when scope changes, discarding the prior draft.
  • The controlled switch stays checked until Off is persisted, so a new draft cannot open before that pending Off update arrives.

Focused browser regressions cover deferred activation, invalid visible text, cancellation, failed saves, and overlapping submissions. Both independent final code reviews passed.

  • test(web): storage drafts release on failure and evidence harnesses clean up08a14c5

Fixed both findings in 08a14c5: openDraft disposes its render if setup fails; the fixture now provides an explicit, idempotent post-capture cleanup command and prints it after preparation. All 10 storage browser tests pass; targeted lint, formatting, syntax and cleanup lifecycle checks pass. Production code is unchanged.

Assert the newer draft age after the older save fails.

The test only checks that the input remains mounted. A regression could keep the draft open but reset its value from 30 to 8, and this test would still pass. Assert the draft value after the older submission fails.

Addressed the overlapping-save test nit in b9b46a5: after the older save fails, the test now asserts that the current input still contains 30. This also fails if the input disappears. All 10 storage browser tests, targeted lint and formatting pass. Production code is unchanged.

apps/web/src/components/settings/StorageSettings.tsx:236-249 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the retention switch checked until the Off save succeeds.

When a committed enable is still saving, value is null and enabling is "saving". The switch-off handler clears enabling before onChange(null) resolves, so the switch can show Off while the Off request is pending. A failed Off result does not restore that local state. Clear enabling only after the returned promise resolves true.

  • test(web): wait for the edited age after a failed earlier save1e57ef1

Fixed the DOM synchronization finding in 1e57ef1: the age assertion now uses vi.waitFor. The focused storage, scoped-settings and compiler-coverage suites pass (1176 tests); targeted lint, formatting and web typecheck pass.

The outside-diff pending-Off finding does not demonstrate a persistent incorrect state. Storage settings are server-owned. If the preceding enable succeeds and Off fails, the authoritative settings update supplies the saved age and RetentionControl resets from value, restoring On. If both fail, Off remains authoritative. If Off succeeds, the server supplies null. There can be a temporary optimistic Off display while enable is pending; the proposed unconditional retention of enabling state can instead stick On when both writes fail. No production change is needed for the claimed failure to restore.
