feat(clients): display optional subagent context snapshots#21643
Claude subagent context snapshots disappear before they reach lineage and timeline tooltips. This layer adds an optional wire field and shared formatting, then displays the latest reported context tokens and tool uses in web tooltips and mobile Agents/transcript rows. Missing snapshots stay hidden; zero and decreases remain visible. Settled task snapshots hide while a child follow-up is active or queued. Lineage also drops the older snapshot when it overlays a newer finished child run.
Rebuilt from Gigioxx’s #15446 against current main. The maintainer takeover covers this focused restoration. Related #15429 remains open: cumulative cost and maximum-window display are outside this change. The next stack layer supplies Claude snapshots; this layer stands alone when providers omit them.
Verification: 60 focused Node tests passed (runtime 19→20, contracts 38 unchanged, web Node 2 unchanged); the new codec/projection case fails on main. All 18 existing browser cases passed; one was extended to cover usage, decreases, live-follow-up hiding and a newer finished child run. Scoped contracts, runtime, web and mobile typechecks plus targeted lint/format passed. One new runtime test, no new browser test cases. Two fresh whole-stack review rounds by Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol completed; the second round found no blockers after fixes for workflow totals mislabeled as context and stale context beside a newer finished child run.
Before/after proof: actual main production sources at 1451e7cb23 versus rebuilt stack at 93c22b64a6 (client layer 90df6f1425). Both use identical synthetic isolated data, a 1280×800 viewport, scroll state and font fallback. The running web app verified both timeline and lineage hover cards. Synthetic data exercises rendering; separate adapter tests exercise provider frames. No fresh Claude CLI/account, real SDK workflow, remote/relay/tunnel, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android or Electron desktop session was verified. Mobile layout was inspected and typechecked, with usage on its own line so model names cannot squeeze it out.

Approvability
Verdict: Approved at 90df6f1
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a backward-compatible, optional data-field addition with localized formatting and display changes in existing web and mobile subagent surfaces. Existing behavior remains unchanged when snapshots are absent, and the follow-up handling only prevents stale informational data from being shown.

📝 Walkthrough
The change adds context-token and tool-use snapshots to the subagent runtime, resolves whether snapshots should be displayed based on child-thread activity, and shows formatted usage in web tooltips and mobile subagent rows.

Suppress snapshots after a newer completed child run.
If a child thread completes a follow-up run, activityRunStatus is null and status is "completed". This resolver then returns the earlier terminal task’s usage. The timeline tooltip in apps/web/src/components/chat/V2LifecycleRow.tsx and the mobile row in apps/mobile/src/features/threads/SubagentRow.tsx display that stale snapshot. Compare the child’s latestRunRequestedAt with the task’s completion time before returning terminal-task usage.

Checked both consumers against the current head. These two surfaces show the original task’s own status, result and timing, so its last reported snapshot remains valid after a separate child follow-up finishes. The timeline reads agent.status and agent.result in SubagentTimelineLink; mobile derives its row from the passed task in SubagentRow. Neither overlays a newer finished child run’s outcome. Hiding the task snapshot there would remove valid task history.
Lineage does overlay a newer child run’s status/timing, so that path explicitly clears the old context in currentSubagent. The existing browser case proves same-run completed context remains visible, then disappears when lineage overlays a newer finished child. The shared resolver still hides terminal-task usage while a follow-up is active/queued. Both independent second-round reviews checked this distinction; resolving this as an intentional task-snapshot display, rather than changing timeline/mobile to represent a different run.
@juliusmarminge Thanks for clarifying. I withdraw this finding.
Timeline and mobile show the original task’s status, result, timing, and context snapshot. A completed child follow-up does not invalidate that task history. Lineage displays newer-run status and timing, so its separate context-clearing logic is appropriate. The shared resolver does not need the proposed timestamp guard.

| 5 | Learning: In t3code’s React/TypeScript subagent displays, SubagentTimelineLink in apps/web/src/components/chat/V2LifecycleRow.tsx and SubagentRow in apps/mobile/src/features/threads/SubagentRow.tsx represent the original task. Its context snapshot remains valid after a separate child follow-up completes. By contrast, currentSubagent in apps/web/src/components/chat/ThreadRelationshipsControl.tsx overlays newer child-run status and timing and clears the original context snapshot. Do not require packages/client-runtime/src/state/subagentDisplay.ts resolveSubagentContextUsage to suppress historical task snapshots solely because a newer child run completed. |

✅ Review thread resolved.

Validated current head 90df6f1: CI is green after one rerun for the unchanged script-highlighting browser test; its isolated three-case run also passed. The cancelled native fingerprint job was superseded by a successful run of the same workflow/head. Normal skipped jobs remain skipped. Macroscope approved the current head, and CodeRabbit withdrew the historical-snapshot finding after source-backed clarification; all review threads are resolved. Two independent full-stack review rounds, scoped typechecks/lint, focused Node/browser tests, and actual-main/head tooltip proof are recorded in the description. Ready for maintainer review; unmerged.
