GitLab MR browser paths include an installation prefix, while API project identities do not. Passing the browser path directly can fail or read and comment on a different project with the same path spelling.

Resolve actual HTTP clone/MR URLs through glab repo view and use the returned project identity. Lookup failures stop the operation. Raw API/SSH references retain raw semantics, including when their spelling matches an HTTP checkout. Repository-only MCP link/watch resolves the actual MR URL before storing it; legacy agent display URLs remain raw until relinked. This consumes the optional persisted metadata in #21575.

Rebuilt from @fixfon’s #20241. Retained the project JSON decoder and real CLI resolution; replaced ambiguous fallback behavior with explicit URL provenance and raw-selector routing. Original eight added regression cases became two provider cases, one MCP failure case, and extensions to existing service/reactor/persistence cases.

Verification at 12b3a0c5bd:

  • Before: four expected failures → after: 559 passing focused cases in 13 files. Scoped server/contracts/source-control typechecks, lint and formatting pass.
  • Real GitLab 18.4.6 CE mounted at /gitlab, glab 1.118.0, two private projects with colliding paths and MR 1: nine integrated MCP → service → CLI → SQLite/Sync/initial Watch cases. Parent independently reran all nine. HTTP checkout reads select project 1; raw MCP/legacy agent references select project 2. Existing-link watch makes zero host reads.
  • Real service proof: comments reach the correct project, unavailable explicit URLs never fall back, and restored URL-specific disk caches make zero host reads.
  • Four independent review rounds: fixed wrong-project fallback, generated-link provenance, HTTP checkout inheritance, and redundant existing-link watch reads. Final round has no blocking findings.

Full live-proof boundaries: identities supplied to real services, isolated in-memory SQLite and fixture-only credentials; glab uses a configured portless alias to loopback port 8924. This does not establish universal nonstandard-port configuration. Initial watch state was verified; actual wake/agent delivery, MCP HTTP transport, UI, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Electron were not executed. URL-specific UI/reactor caches can make additional host reads; invalidation remains tuple-wide. Existing interactive cross-project URL loss and simultaneous link-key collisions are unchanged. No UI changed, so screenshots do not apply. CI and human approval are separate gates.

CI follow-up: the browser WorkflowOpeningBlock.browser.test.tsx:103 highlighting assertion failed twice on this head. The web/client implementation is unchanged; this remains a CI gate. The lower layer passed after one unrelated SSH-test retry. Human approval is required. Not merge-ready.

Implemented with GPT-6.1 Sol; tests/proof with GPT-6 Astra; reviewed by Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol, through T3 Code with Codex and Claude Code harnesses.

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This cross-cutting runtime fix changes repository routing and adds project-resolution calls across existing GitLab pull-request reads and writes, rather than making a localized correction. An unresolved Medium finding also reports that the new path cache misses identical lookups, so the change warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Pull-request references now preserve optional web URLs through service and provider calls. GitLab operations resolve URL provenance to project paths. MCP handlers resolve target URLs for links and watches. Sync and watch reactors pass URL provenance into pull-request references.

Changes: Pull-request URL provenance and GitLab routing

Layer / File(s)Summary
Carry web URLs through pull-request service references
packages/source-control-core/..., apps/server/src/pullRequest/...
Service references and provider requests carry optional web URLs. Routing, provider calls, cache keys, viewed-file requests, and guide-service inputs preserve the URL.
Resolve GitLab project paths from web URLs
packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/...
The GitLab CLI normalizes URLs, resolves project paths, and caches successful results. Provider operations use the resolved project when a web URL is present.
Resolve URLs for MCP links and watches
apps/server/src/mcp/...
MCP handlers remove URL credentials and resolve GitLab details before creating links or enabling new watches. Tests cover success, failure, and existing-link paths.
Pass link URLs into sync and watch references
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/...
Sync and watch reactors include repository web URLs in pull-request references when available. Agent links use null when no repository web URL exists.

Define the supported glab URL-parsing contract.

resolveProjectPath passes the normalized full URL to glab repo view, but the fixture removes /gitlab/ and .git before matching the project. The test therefore does not exercise glab's parser.

The repository does not declare a supported glab version. Full URLs and .git suffixes are supported by glab, while custom-port parsing changed in glab v1.82.0 and subfolder installations have separate parser issues. Document the minimum supported version and add targeted coverage for HTTP, custom ports, relative-path prefixes, and .git URLs. Verify subfolder behavior separately rather than assuming the fixture models it.

Move GitLab link resolution into the pull-request service.

resolveLink now performs a provider detail read inside an MCP transport handler. Put that resolution in the existing domain service, and keep the handler responsible for calling the service and mapping its error. As per coding guidelines, “A transport handler does three things: decode the request, call one service method, and map the service's typed errors.” As per path instructions, “transport handlers should only decode requests, call one service method, and map typed errors.”

The host lookup already runs in the pull-request domain service: this handler calls PullRequestService.detail, and its provider/CLI adapters resolve the project and execute all host I/O. This transport helper only chooses the explicit raw selector for a repository-only MCP input, copies the returned URL into link metadata, and maps service failure before dispatching the existing orchestration command. It never calls a provider or CLI directly. A second domain method wrapping detail solely to return its URL would duplicate that service operation for this transport. Keeping the existing service boundary and small helper here; no runtime change is needed for this refactor suggestion.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for clarifying. resolveLink calls PullRequestService.detail, not a provider or CLI directly. Selecting the raw reference and copying the returned URL into link metadata does not bypass the service boundary. My refactor suggestion was unnecessary, so I withdraw it. No code change is needed.

5Learning: In apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/pullRequests/handlers.ts, the TypeScript Effect helper resolveLink uses PullRequestService.detail with webUrl: null for repository-only GitLab MCP inputs. The domain service and its provider/CLI adapters own project resolution and host I/O. Selecting this raw reference and copying the returned URL into link metadata are acceptable transport-level adaptation; do not require a second domain method solely to wrap detail and return its URL.

CI follow-up: the lower layer’s SSH zombie-process test passed on the single retry, and its current checks pass. This upper head still fails WorkflowOpeningBlock.browser.test.tsx:103 (missing asynchronous Shiki highlighting) on both attempts; neither this test nor its web/client implementation changed in this stack. The upper layer is not merge-ready until that CI failure is cleared, and Macroscope also requires human approval. I did not alter an unrelated browser test to bypass the gate.

For the glab compatibility nit: evidence uses the actual glab 1.118.0 binary against a real GitLab 18.4.6 /gitlab installation, not a parser stub. Clone URLs ending in .git, HTTP/MR URLs, both colliding projects, and the configured custom-port setup were exercised. The body explicitly records the portless alias caveat. No minimum-version claim is inferred for older glab releases; a maintainer using an older CLI should verify that version or use the verified version before landing.

If the link is unlinked after before is read but before dispatch, this sends the watch command without link; the reducer then finds no link and leaves the thread unchanged, so watch_pull_request completes without starting the watch. Include the already-read link in the command's fallback link payload when before exists, so the reducer can restore it without another host lookup.

@juliusmarminge I think it makes sense that this should include a one-time repair for previously stored MR links that fail. Existing links affected would otherwise remain broken after upgrading, requiring users to unlink and relink each MR manually. What do you think?
