fix(web): branch picker no longer interrupts a running turn#15255

Picking a branch checked out in another worktree used to detach a running turn without explaining why. The web picker now disables those selections until the turn ends, while keeping same-worktree picks available. It rechecks received thread state before mutations and after checkout/ref creation, so a newer run is not stopped by a stale selection.

Closes #14245. Maintainer takeover of ScottN-PV’s #15255; original commits and author credit are preserved. Current main was merged without rewriting the contributor’s history. The rebuild centralizes the mutation guard and uses the row renderer to invalidate virtualized rows.

Verification on headless Linux:

  • 88 focused tests pass: cd apps/web && pnpm exec vp test run src/components/BranchToolbar.panel.browser.test.tsx src/components/BranchToolbar.logic.test.ts.
  • Web pnpm exec tsc-rs --noEmit, targeted lint, format check, and git diff --check pass.
  • PR-added coverage reduced from 22 cases in two files to nine browser cases in the existing panel suite. Both deferred races fail when their completion guards are disabled; disabling the guard causes seven regression failures.
  • Isolated live web app, real Git repository with main and feature worktrees, real Codex turn running sleep 120: clicking the disabled row and keyboard selection left the persisted run running on main. After Stop, selecting feature moved the thread to its worktree. Before capture uses current-main production source; after uses the rebuilt source. Crops show the same fixture, viewport, and picker location.

Recording: blocked selection while running, then successful selection after Stop

The nine browser cases cover preparing/starting/running/waiting, same-worktree selection, unlock, stale pre-action state, automatic base selection, and both deferred checkout/creation races. No server or wire contract changed. Web and desktop share the picker; mobile remains outside this web PR. The client can only guard against updates it has received; server-side agent handoffs remain supported.

Not verified live: macOS, Windows, Electron desktop, iOS, Android, other providers, or relay/tunnel connections. These are platform verification limits, not claims inferred from Linux.

Independent whole-diff reviews: one round each by Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol, both with no blockers. Opus independently passed all 14 browser cases; Sol passed all 88 focused cases. Current-head CI is green, including build/typecheck, lint, tests, CodeRabbit, and Macroscope. Unmerged; landing is handled centrally.

Models: GPT-6-Astra (tests), GPT-6.1-Sol (implementation), Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol (review). Harness: Codex and Claude through T3 Code.

📝 Walkthrough

The branch picker now blocks worktree changes during active runs. It checks the latest thread state before selection and after checkout or ref creation. It disables affected branch rows and displays a warning when a change is blocked.

Changes: Worktree change guard

Layer / File(s)Summary
Define and test the worktree change predicate
apps/web/src/components/BranchToolbar.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/BranchToolbar.logic.test.ts
isWorktreeChangeBlocked blocks changes to a different worktree when the runtime indicates an interruptible running thread. Tests cover active and inactive statuses, queued runs, same-worktree selections, and returns to the main checkout.

The selector reads the latest thread state before selection and rechecks it after checkout or ref creation. If a change is blocked, it skips the thread update, restores the optimistic branch when needed, and displays a warning. The picker disables affected rows and supports notices and extra data for row updates. Tests cover toolbar and panel selection, including a null server worktree path.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d4d3d

Branch selection is intended to keep an active turn from being interrupted by a worktree change. The code contains post-checkout and post-creation guards, but the new tests do not cover a run starting while either operation is pending, leaving a regression-coverage gap. The change is mergeable with a focused test follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d4d3d

The change reduces accidental interruption of running turns without adding permissions or broader access. Protection still depends on client-visible state rather than an atomic server-side rule, so concurrent actions remain a limitation.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed behavior operates on existing branch actions, worktrees, and thread metadata within the selected environment. The comparison adds no server endpoint, credential authority, or deployment change; no expansion of attacker-controlled reachability was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Git actions continue to recheck source-control write permission and, for server threads, orchestration-operate permission. Metadata application also rechecks orchestration permission. Runtime-based row disabling supplements these controls rather than replacing them.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Residual stale-update and run-start races predate this PR. The server supports optional expected-worktree and expected-branch checks, but this client command does not forward those conditions. A latest-state read is therefore not an atomic ownership guarantee, although the new checks reduce previously unguarded transitions.

Explanation

[#14245] The web branch picker blocks refs that change the thread worktree while deriveCanInterruptRunningThread reports an interruptible run. The rule covers preparing, starting, running, waiting, and queued runs. Same-worktree refs and ref creation remain available. BranchToolbarBranchSelector reads current thread state when actions execute and rechecks state after asynchronous checkout or ref creation. It preserves the current worktree and shows a warning when a newer run or worktree move appears. The supplied logic and selector tests cover blocked refs, allowed refs, stale store state, and both picker layouts.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes in BranchToolbar.logic.ts, BranchToolbarBranchSelector.tsx, and BranchPicker.tsx implement the worktree-change guard, current-state checks, notices, and row refresh required by [#14245]. The added logic and tests support branch selection behavior. No unrelated change is evident in the supplied whole-PR summary.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the problem, implementation, scope, verification results, UI evidence, limitations, and agent details. It links the tracked issue and related PR, but it does not include an explicit maintainer approval comment as requested by the template. This is a minor omission, and the description is otherwise complete.

Use the latest worktree path in the selection guard.

If another client moves the thread from worktree A to B after this render, the handler reads the latest runtime but still compares paths using A. Selecting a ref whose worktreePath is A can pass the guard, reuse A, and call setThreadBranch without reaching the post-checkout check. The metadata update can detach the active provider session and interrupt the run. Resolve the guard and selection target from the latest thread path.

✅ Addressed in commits 76525dc to 371f902

Fixed in 76525dcd, unchanged in 371f9026. The selection guard and the selection target now read the thread's latest runtime and worktree path from the store when the handler runs, so a move from another client counts before the picker re-renders.

I could not reproduce the stale click in a running client. On both f827e4ae and 76525dcd the picker re-rendered about 0.4 s after the server accepted the move, and the list reloaded with the row disabled. This change is checked by reading the code only.

Preserve a present thread’s null worktree path after checkout.

For a non-default ref without an existing worktree, resolveBranchSelectionTarget retains the captured secondary path as nextWorktreePath. If another client moves the thread to the main checkout while checkout is pending and a run starts there, this fallback makes the recheck compare the stale path with the same target. The guard then allows the update. setThreadBranch skips its explicit stop because the target matches the captured path, but still submits the path through updateThreadMetadata. The server can move the thread back and detach the provider session, interrupting the run. Use the captured path only when latestThread is absent.

Fixed in 76525dcd. The post-checkout recheck now uses the latest thread's path, including null for the main checkout, and falls back to the captured path only when the thread is not in the store. setThreadBranch's session stop reads the same state. 371f9026 adds the same recheck after a ref creation, which had the same window.

Checked in a running client with a second client that moved the thread and started a run during a held checkout. On f827e4ae the picker moved the thread back and the run was interrupted. On 76525dcd the warning toast appeared, the client sent no metadata update and no stop, and the run completed. The ref-creation case interrupted the run on 76525dcd and completed on 371f9026. Captures are in the PR body.

Use the stored worktree path in the post-create guard.

When forceNewWorktree is true, createRefMutation targets the project root, but readLatestThreadState() reports the rendered activeWorktreePath (null) instead of the thread shell’s current path. If another client moves the thread and starts a run while ref creation is pending, the guard compares null with null and falls through to setThreadBranch, which submits worktreePath: null. The server can then detach the active provider session and interrupt the run. Read the latest shell path for currentWorktreePath here, while keeping activeWorktreePath as the intended next path.

Valid, and narrow. With multiple models selected, the selector treats the thread as having no worktree, so this guard compares null with null. Creating a ref in that mode needs a started thread, and multi-select is offered only on the draft route, which a started thread leaves right after its first send. The path sent worktreePath: null unguarded before this PR. I am leaving it out to keep this PR to one problem.

Use the latest thread path for rendered blocking decisions.

When serverThread exists with worktreePath: null and the draft still has a non-null worktreePath, activeWorktreePath uses the draft path. The rendered row and notice then treat a default ref that resolves to the main checkout as a worktree change and disable it. The click handler reads the server thread and permits the same ref because its current and next paths are both null.

Use the server thread path for the rendered helper when a server thread exists, or otherwise apply the same latest-state read used by the handler.

✅ Addressed in commit 4e4e8fb

Fixed in 4e4e8fb503. When a server thread exists, the selector now uses its worktreePath, including null for the main checkout, and falls back to the draft only when there is no server thread. BranchToolbarBranchSelector.test.tsx covers a running thread on the main checkout with a leftover worktree draft, in both picker layouts. main stays selectable, and picking it updates the thread without a stop. Both cases fail without the fix.

Written by Claude Opus 5.5 on behalf of Scott Norteman.

@ScottN-PV Thanks for the fix. The supplied code now preserves the server thread’s worktreePath, including null, and uses the draft path only when no server thread exists. This makes rendered blocking decisions consistent with the click handler for the reported case.

The reported regression tests cover both picker layouts. I have not run them independently.

Activating a base-ref row after another client assigns a worktree and starts a run calls setThreadBranch(refName.name, null), which stops that run because null differs from the latest worktree path. The latest-state guard comes after the stale isSelectingWorktreeBase early return, so it never runs on this path; recompute the base-selection condition from the latest thread state and check whether the worktree change is blocked before returning.

The automatic base-branch defaulting effect can stop a newly started thread run, interrupting work that began after the effect was committed. Include each ref’s worktree in row invalidation.

When a ref-only refresh changes VcsRef.worktreePath, the row item remains the ref name and extraData remains unchanged. The row can therefore retain an obsolete disabled value.

✅ Addressed in commit d4d3df7

Fixed in d4d3df74ab: row invalidation now includes each ref's worktree path. The toolbar and panel tests now use the real list and cover a refs-only refresh in both directions. Both fail when this addition is reverted.

Written by Claude Opus 5.5 on behalf of Scott Norteman.

@ScottN-PV Thanks for the fix. The supplied code now includes each ref’s name and worktreePath in extraData, which addresses this finding. Your reported real-list tests cover refs-only refreshes in both directions for toolbar and panel modes.

Exercise the post-await guard in the selector tests.

The added cases change latestStarted and latestWorktreePath before the click. The selection then exits at the pre-action guard and never awaits checkout or ref creation. Add deferred switchRef and createRefMutation cases that change the latest thread state while the promise is pending, then assert that neither stopSession nor metadata update runs. Otherwise, removing the post-checkout or post-create guard can pass these tests.
