fix(logging): record failed requests and stop toasting sync disconnects#2018

No issue: closes gaps in diagnostic logging found while reading two tester bug reports from 1.0.1-beta.24.

Summary

Two bug reports from a Windows tester held almost nothing to diagnose from: every error read as a bare "Error" with no code or stack, and the failure that locked up a note save was never recorded. This change records every failed request in the main process with the request name and error code, without adding toasts the app already shows or deliberately leaves out. It stops raising a warning toast each time a teammate's sync connection closes normally, which a probe against the real network library showed is what the tester's toast was, and records why a connection ended as a short reason code instead. It also keeps stack traces for installs under a folder name with a space, and logs errors the app window leaves uncaught. Error messages still never reach the log, as the logging design requires.

Changes

Files changed, by area
  • Failed requests (src/main/ipcWrap.ts, src/main/index.ts, src/main/services/logSafe.ts, src/shared/types.ts, src/renderer/lib/mainLogBridge.ts, src/renderer/lib/notify.ts): handle() logs a refusal at warn (ipc.request_refused, with channel and the refusal code as errorCode) and any other throw at error (ipc.request_threw, with name, code and stack). The logger arrives through logIpcFailuresTo() at startup because logger.ts already imports ipcWrap.ts. A new channel() brand validates the channel name. The main-log bridge does not toast either code: a failed mutation already toasts in the renderer, and the design says failed queries log without a toast.
  • Sharing disconnects (src/main/services/sharing/transport.ts, irohTransport.ts, sharingService.ts, src/shared/types.ts, src/renderer/lib/notify.ts): Iroh stream read and write rejections become a TransportError that keeps the binding's message (still shown in a failed session's detail) and carries a reason code such as PEER_CLOSED or TIMED_OUT. The classifier patterns come from a probe of @number0/iroh 1.2.0 over n0's relays, where a peer's normal close read ConnectionLost(ApplicationClosed(ApplicationClose { error_code: 0, ... })) with code GenericFailure. sharing.stream_failed logs at info for an ordinary disconnect (a closed, lost, timed-out or reset connection or stream) and at warn otherwise, including a peer that closes with a nonzero code and an error the classifier cannot name. Its label now reads "An incoming sharing request failed", which covers join requests as well as sync sessions. ERROR_NAMES gains the five sharing error classes. session.ts (blocking tier) is untouched.
  • Stack frames (src/main/services/logSafe.ts): the frame filter refused whitespace in a location, so a frame under C:\Users\Jane Doe\... was dropped before the install root was stripped. The filter now reads the app root and home directory as one token while testing; the function name still has to pass on its own.
  • Uncaught renderer errors (src/renderer/lib/globalErrorLog.ts, src/renderer/main.tsx): error and unhandledrejection listeners log app.uncaught_exception and app.unhandled_rejection with the class name only, no toast.
  • Tests (tests/main/ipcWrap.test.ts, tests/main/services/logSafe.test.ts, tests/main/services/sharing/irohTransport.test.ts, tests/main/services/sharing/sharingService.test.ts, tests/renderer/lib/mainLogBridge.test.ts, tests/renderer/lib/globalErrorLog.test.ts).
  • Left out: sending error codes from renderer query and mutation failures, and giving the 31 code-less notify calls real codes, are separate follow-ups. Each Shared Case's sync-state.json stays out of the bug report bundle, per the maintainer, because its detail is free text.

Walkthrough

The changes add logging for IPC failures and renderer-level uncaught errors. They also classify Iroh transport errors and adjust how incoming-stream failures are logged.

Changes: Application diagnostics

Layer / File(s)Summary
IPC failure logging
src/shared/types.ts, src/main/services/logSafe.ts, src/main/ipcWrap.ts, src/main/index.ts, tests/main/ipcWrap.test.ts, tests/main/services/logSafe.test.ts
IPC failures are logged at warning or error level according to their handling path. Log context includes a validated channel and, for eligible refusal codes, a normalized error code. The safe logging helpers and tests cover channel validation and stack-frame sanitization.
Sharing transport failure handling
src/main/services/sharing/transport.ts, src/main/services/sharing/irohTransport.ts, src/main/services/sharing/sharingService.ts, src/shared/types.ts, src/renderer/lib/notify.ts, tests/main/services/sharing/*
Iroh stream errors are classified into TransportFailure codes and wrapped as TransportError instances. Incoming stream failures log transport errors at info level and other errors at warning level. Related error names and the sharing failure label are updated.
Renderer uncaught error logging
src/renderer/lib/globalErrorLog.ts, src/renderer/main.tsx, tests/renderer/lib/globalErrorLog.test.ts
Global errors and unhandled rejections are logged with separate diagnostic codes and error class names. The listeners are registered during startup and removed by the returned cleanup callback.
Renderer IPC log handling
src/renderer/lib/mainLogBridge.ts, src/renderer/lib/notify.ts, tests/renderer/lib/mainLogBridge.test.ts
The renderer bridge skips IPC refusal and thrown-error entries before toast handling. Notification labels and tests cover the added IPC log codes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states its purpose clearly and follows the template. It has a 'No issue:' reason line, a Summary, a grouped Changes list, 'Evidence-affecting: No', and the Verification block. The Summary is longer than the five-sentence limit in the template and includes file names and code spans, which the template prohibits. The Changes list is in the template format but includes prose bullets with detailed explanations, which the template says to avoid. Those are formatting deviations, not missing information. The template's final line, 'Pull request description generated by Claude Code', is missing. Overall the description is mostly complete, so it passes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 10 functions across 17 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

asTransportError also assigns TRANSPORT_FAILED to unmatched binding errors and PEER_CLOSED_WITH_ERROR to nonzero peer-close codes. This branch logs both at info. The renderer bridge ignores info entries, so these failures no longer produce the warning that the previous branch produced. Check err.code before selecting info; keep unexpected failures at warn. Use a label that covers join failures.

When an incoming join handler throws, logStreamFailure records sharing.stream_failed at warn level. The toast then says a teammate’s sync failed, although the join failed before sync began. Use a label such as “An incoming sharing request failed” for both join and sync failures. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Name the sync session in this comment.

The sharing code consistently calls this operation a “sync session”. CONTEXT.md reserves unqualified “session” for a Capture Session and provides no exception here.
