feat(browser): require OAuth claims for personal profiles#6

Summary

  • require every !join/!beta/!stable requester to sign in with Discord and explicitly claim the stream before browser, voice or capture allocation
  • retain a private persistent browser profile for each Discord user; only its verified owner may read metadata or operate it, while authorized same-channel users may still !leave
  • stop and wait for capture and the owned Chrome/ChromeDriver processes before another profile can use the shared display/audio; failed cleanup keeps the reservation and leases locked
  • require configured OAuth/web access at startup and persist profiles in a private Compose named volume outside the image/build context

Previously one shared browser survived !leave, so later streams could inherit earlier users' media logins and site storage. Different users now select independent profiles, and returning users keep their own logins. This remains one active stream per bot instance. Browser screens are visible to stream viewers, as stated before claiming.

Stacking

fix/web-oauth-controls ← feat/user-browser-profiles. Depends on #5; merge after #1 → #2 → #3 → #4 → #5. Optional extension loading (#7) and the TV SponsorBlock companion (#8) are separate child PRs; merge those in order after #6. No browser preview is ported.

Verification

  • npm test: 141/141 in the profile layer on macOS; final full stack: 163/163 on macOS and Fedora/Node 22
  • actual Chromium 154 in a disposable Linux/Xvfb/PulseAudio container: user A → B saw empty cookies, localStorage, IndexedDB, service workers and CacheStorage; A → A recovered each
  • normal quit and injected failed quit: browser PID exited, X11 windows returned to baseline and PulseAudio sink inputs were empty before replacement; an indefinitely loading initial page cancelled in 10,046 ms
  • browser UI with stub OAuth: login returned to the claim page without starting; only the explicit same-origin/CSRF Start POST claimed; account switching preserves the locator
  • actual read-only profile mount rejected with a clear storage configuration error; the existing npm entrypoint forwarded SIGTERM and completed cleanup before exiting 0
  • git diff --check
  • direct Opus 5.5 High review on NB-LVLQYQ1F3D: no remaining findings at 2f11ce595393273622d22801583dfeae2c5542e0

Operational limits

Linux /proc is required; macOS/Windows hosts use the Linux container. Abrupt crashes leave conservative root/owner lease files: the operator must verify old bot/browser/driver/capture processes are gone before removing only those lease files. Profile data stays intact. Roles are cached for at most 30 seconds for controls, with fresh verification at claim/startup. No sharing/reset UI is included. Native mobile browser testing is unavailable because T3 device access is disabled in this environment. Real Discord claim consent and a public HTTPS callback were not exercised; the user's existing live stream was left running on its earlier image.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Start streams through a five-minute claim link and Discord sign-in. The verified requester owns the browser session, with personal browser data kept separate and persistent.
    • Browser controls and URL navigation are limited to the stream owner with current access.
  • Reliability
    • Stream shutdown now waits for browser and capture processes to exit before resources are released, reducing conflicts when restarting.
  • Setup
    • Server and OAuth configuration are required to start streams. Persistent browser-profile storage is configured for container deployments.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Streams now start through short-lived claim links and require an authenticated, authorized owner. Each owner receives a persistent browser profile. The changes add profile and process lifecycle controls, claim authorization and web pages, Discord command integration, and supporting tests and deployment settings.

Changes

Personal Browser Streams

Layer / File(s)Summary
Profile configuration and deployment
.dockerignore, .env.example, .gitignore, README.md, compose.yaml, src/config.ts, src/index.ts
Configuration and startup now define and prepare a dedicated browser-profile root. Container settings mount persistent profile storage and allow 30 seconds for shutdown. Setup documentation describes the OAuth and profile requirements.
Profile ownership and browser cleanup
src/browser/*, src/streaming/direct.ts, src/browser/capture.ts, src/browser/child-exit.ts, test/profiles.test.mjs, test/driver.test.mjs, test/integration/profile-isolation.mjs, test/streaming.test.mjs
Browser startup leases a private profile to a validated owner and tracks the browser process. Browser operations check that the expected driver remains active. Shutdown waits for process exit before releasing the profile lease. Tests cover profile isolation, persistence, cleanup, and stale browser operations.
Claim authorization and web flow
src/server/claims.ts, src/server/authorization.ts, src/server/web.ts, src/server/index.ts, src/discord/streaming.ts, public/claim.html, public/js/claim.js, public/js/remote.js, public/css/style.css, docs/DISCORD_OAUTH.md, test/claims.test.mjs, test/web.test.mjs
The web server serves claim pages and accepts authenticated, origin- and CSRF-checked claim submissions. Claim handling verifies ownership, current membership, and join permission before startup. The claim page supports sign-in, account switching, and stream claiming.
Discord command wiring
src/discord/commands.ts, src/index.ts, test/commands.test.mjs, README.md, .env.example
Join commands reserve claims instead of starting streams directly. Leave and voice-departure handling stop streams through claim teardown. URL navigation requires browser ownership and current join permission.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9945a

Claim-based streams and per-user browser profiles appear coherent. One configuration gap remains: a profile root set to a parent directory of the app is accepted, and startup would lock down that parent directory's permissions. Tighten the check before or soon after merge.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject profile roots that are ancestors of the application directory.

If resolved is an ancestor of application, path.relative returns only .. segments (.., ../..). The current condition accepts those values. The deny list blocks only /, $HOME, the temp directory, /var and /var/lib. It does not block a path such as /opt when the app is at /opt/theatre. With that value, the application and build context sit inside the profile root. This breaks the "outside the application/build context" rule that the error message states. prepareProfileRoot would also run chmod 0700 on that shared ancestor directory, and owner directories would be created next to the app.

✅ Addressed in commit 16b8bab

Fixed in 16b8bab. validateProfileRoot now checks containment in both directions and rejects the application directory, its descendants, and all ancestors before any directory creation or chmod. Dedicated external directories, including sibling names sharing the application prefix, remain valid. The new ancestor regression test failed before the fix and passes afterward; the full PR #6 suite passes 143/143 tests.

@PixPMusic Thanks for fixing this in 16b8bab. The two-way containment check addresses the ancestor-path concern. The regression test covers the reported failure.
